  1. TECHNIC NON-VEHICLE CONTEST - DISCUSSION TOPIC Better late than never, but the winter is coming (for most of us), so let's find something to do. This was actually the topic I had in mind for the first contest I hosted. At the time TLG requested if we could to a triple build contest (this was TC2). After that I never pursued this idea....until now...finally...TC28 DESCRIPTION Build something that is not a vehicle, having some interesting functions or mechanics. Animals are not allowed (we will save that for another contest). You can build machinery and mechanical stuff etc. As long as it's not a vehicle. Furthermore, the model should be a static model, so you ca…

So, last night I was testing out a new vacuum engine design. It was an inline 2 cylinder, with 4x4 pistons and 3 stud stroke, and had a new base and supercharger design. The supercharger had only one rotor(most have two) in an effort to save more parts and to not use up all the engine's power. I was running the engine at full throttle with a tiny Shark household vacuum and was measuring the RPM's with my tachometer. It redlined at about 2350 RPM, then slowed to 1800, and slowed even more to 1000, idled a few seconds around 650, and died. I tried turning the flywheel to restart the engine but it was stuck. After taking the engine apart, I discovered one of the pistons…

  10. Let´s start with brand new model for the LEGO Technic Challenge. A 29 cm tall figure of American astronaut with moving wrists, elbows and shoulders. 11. Started by howitzer,

I have had the idea of a metal lathe bubbling in my mind for a long time, and this is the perfect contest to make it reality. Originally I thought it impossible to do properly as there was no way to make long enough screw for the feed but that changed with the release of 73763 with which can arbitrarily long screws be made. Another significant problem was the need for a suitable main bearing which can take the weight of the spindle and has a large enough hole through for the bore. This was enabled by the hoop parts 3250 and 77107 along with the steel ball 99948. I tried GBC balls but as expected, the rolling was very rough and not what I wanted for this kind of thing…

  12. Hello All. First some background... For the TL:DR crowd, there are some pretty pictures below :P So, while in my mid/late 50's and having been dealing with ME/CFS for past decade... I recently found that getting back into LEGO was a great self-help/therapeutic method to get my brain back into gear (but a rather big hit on the bank... Pro Tip: never have one-click purchasing available for online shopping while under the influence of a very foggy, groggy, unfocused but desperate for stimulus brain). After I got past the costly Classic Space nostalgia, I decided to stick with the equally costly :P MINDSTORMS, Technic, trains and things that actually did stuff. I …

  13. Hello, this is my first proper thread so forgive me if it’s a little amateurish in layout. With that said i’d like to begin by saying i’ve been working on this project on and off for a few years to get my 75054 AT-AT walking, having tried out the mechanism for the official LEGO walking AT-AT i’ve found that it is not stable enough nor satisfying. Since then I have been through multiple iterations of trying to get each leg moving but with only one off the ground at a time. As you can see in the pic from DK’s StarWars Vehicles book the mechanism for connecting and moving the lower leg relative to the upper leg seems to be similarly joined enough th…

  14. So I just finished installing a set of PU lights in my MOC when I saw that one LED wasn't working. After closer inspection I noticed that there were bare cables right on the exit from the black box between the connector and the LEDs. Than with help from a slim flat head screwdriver I managed to open the black box. There I saw the 2 bare wires crossing each other which I think shouldn't be happening. After I untangled the wires everything worked again. (I'll protect them properly later) It was interesting to finally see what was hiding in that black box as it was always in the way of something. I thought you guys would li…

  15. I just got the Buwizz 3.0. In the first few days is worked as intended. I set up the profile and could drive and steer using both the app and also on the PS5 controller. Suddenly one day later I could no longer steer using the left joystick on the PS5 controller. The right joystick doesnt work either. I could assign the pad-keys to it, and that would work, but its awkward to steer with. I tried with another phone and another controller, but same result. (I tried to download brickcontroller 2, but then again there is a problem calibrating PU L motor..)

  19. I am happy to finally present a model I have been working on for a very long time. There's quite a bit of history preceding the development of this model, which I have hidden in the spoiler below. But before you do, do consider supporting this model on LEGO Ideas, it would be greatly appreciated. Spoiler It all began almost 10 years ago when I had a go at my first decent attempt at building a, larger-than-minifigure-scale, super car. I'm building an Arocs 42043 and the turntable felt quite bad even before assembling it. Turning the gears with my fingers it got stuck even before attaching the crane to it, and after mounting the crane on the truck it barely turned more than 20º before getting stuck and making the clutch gear slip. I had the idea to lubricate it, and looked online about adequate oils. I found that some recommended silicone oil, and I went to the garge as I had a silicone oil spray. I sprayed inside the turtable through the 4 top holes and spun it and after that everything started to work like magic. Later, I read that some silicone oils contain acetone and that it damages the p…

For Xmas I bought myself the instructions and the extra parts that I didn't already own, to build Nico's Manual Braiding Machine. It's great, works just as it should. Except. I got bored hand-winding the thread onto the bobbins, if it was too loose or too tight or wriggly, the machine couldn't make good braids. I needed to make a winder. First attempt was with bricks and plates, I didn't even think I needed gears. Then realised that gears meant more wound yarn for less winding time. The bobbin itself was being pushed away from the gears, so a little wall stopped that. I then realised it took up far more space than necessary, so swapped out some bigger bricks f…

  26. I have a few fake engines prototypes on the shelf that could be great for this contest but I think this theme is a excellent occasion to try something different, if possible never seen before. I will therefore try this crazy idea first. It could be described as a Gearbox Barrel Organ. It borrows ideas from the Hammond organ, the barrel organ and the gramophone. Working principle: A flexible tab (reed) touching a rotating gear vibrates and create a note noise. If the gear speed increase, so do the noise pitch. So in theory a well-designed gearbox should be able to turn this noise into some kind of melody, right?... let's try! Gearbox : I first tried to play …

  28. CONCEPTION 42082 didn't really appear in my to-do MOCs until I saw the model by Akassin. It looks cool, but there are parts of it that I don't really like. Some parts like the mirrors are too flimsy by Lego standards, the undercarriage doesn't seem to be structurally sound, and the inclusion of the bidirectional gearboxes doesn't really make sense to me, among other things. My approach is that a model should be properly braced and stabilized, and there should be some adaptation regarding the scales. In other words, the features should fit the scale, and some features might work only in one scale and not another. To me, the bidirectional gearboxes work best when the m…

  31. For the eager ones, Studio part files are here: frame and insert. Hello Technic Builders! The existing technic portal hub was a nice piece at the time, but it was designed long ago before the existence of deeper rims (Defender) and it is unfortunately not really compatible with them in the sense that it cannot make use of the extra space (does not fit inside). Unfortunately, when used with regular rims, the current portal hub piece has a horrible steering geometry (huge scrub radius), as it sticks too much out of the wheel, and also takes away a lot of space from the center of the axle build (less room for springs, links, etc). In the past few years I lea…

  32. DEVELOPMENT It's time to level up the mini replica game, and for the next entry in my collection I wanted to work on the 42128. For a Technic head 42128 is easily one of the best models in recent Technic, as it has a lot of functions. It is also an interesting model to build a mini replica from, since its original scale is 15 studs wide, which means the mini version will be the 9 studs wide scale. There hasnt been many official 9 studs wide truck in Lego Technic. The most recent one is the 42167 Mack LR, and the second most recent one is the truck in the set 42023 released way back in 2014. I have done only one mini replica in this scale, which is the mini 42078 B mo…

Not quite sure what to call this thing... A machine to instantly calculate the day of the week for any calendar day of any year (e.g. birthdays, etc.) There will be four hand turned knobs to select the century, year, month and date, and the day of the week will then be displayed. The idea is to do it with differentials, and lots of 1:7 gear ratios. Leap years will be accounted for automatically by an extra lever that adjusts the selection for Jan and Feb (hopefully!) The biggest enemy is gear lash. However, I believe my current prototype shows that it can be done (just). I use a very precise detent mechanism for the knobs, and then gear up before the d…

  34. All my bus models up to this point have been of buses currently in active service. However, my next bus model will be of an older, retired bus: Metro Transit's 2003 New Flyer D60HF. Metro Transit, the transit operator in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, ordered a large number of New Flyer D60HF articulated buses in the 1990s and 2000s, with the final buses in 2006 being the last high-floor articulated buses ever built in the US and Canada. Over the years, they have been gradually replaced by newer New Flyer D60LFR and XD60 articulated buses, and the final D60HF buses were retired by 2021. A number of units were bought by private owners after retireme…

Ever since building my Classic Dump Truck from two years ago, I felt like it was a model that could be greatly improved upon. The original model was built at a relatively small scale, though I was able to put a good number of functions in the model. This will be the sequel to that model, and at a much larger scale. Stud.io model so far: I've immediately put a good amount of electronic components in the model. This model will use Control+ elements; a large angular motor is used for drive, which is 4WD on this model (unlike the previous smaller version which was RWD). Thanks to it having an output on both the front and rear, it is able to easily form a longit…

  36. So perhaps a bit of an explanation first. I live in a small town with a lot of history in England, so as soon as I saw what @Jim was after I knew I’d want to create a historical machine. I thought about a printing press, I thought about a steam engine (without the steam of course) and then I thought about the history of where I live. The town used to have a Mill, it was originally a Corn Mill and then got converted to a Cotton Mill. It was originally powered by water but then in its later years steam. Unfortunately the mill is long gone, but it took me down the route of Mills and the Industrial Revolution. So the plan is to build a Power Loom and ideally a representa…

  37. I decided to do this thread because I am tired to open new ones again and again, so enough speaking about me lets go for the almost MOCs. It seems that we are on dumpers time because I am working on this massive small truck. It will be very simple, only 2 axles steering and bed tipping but I had some problems... the angle and weigh of the bed due the lack of room when the steering work, bed itself also was a problem with technic parts and the scheme color will be a imposible to solve problem at least for the real MOC. I think I do not have to say which the truck is.

  38. Self-explanatory. I've noticed that 3/4 pins will not securely attach to System plates with holes in them, due to there not being a groove on the rim like there is in 1/2 width Technic beams etc. But strangely enough, when you put 2 holed plates on top of each other, a full-length pin will clip securely. Is that by design? I find it a bit frustrating, since it'd be pretty cool to be able to use half-length pins on plates and such. It's particularly egregious with part 3176, which could work really nicely as a trailer attachment on a half-pin or something to that tune, but seems like you need to stack 2 on top of each other to make it work, and us a full length pin then.

  39. So I had this idea for an alt out of an amazing Ford GT set for a while now but not enough time to sit on it. Then Christmas magic happend aka holiday break and this is the result :) I was aiming for somewhat old school look with some modern, sporty additions in form of rear wing and rectangular lights. I'm also pretty happy that I've managed to use all 4 wheel arches :) Some photos (clickable for larger resolution by right click -> open picture in new tab): And short video:

INTRODUCTION The collective interest in a Technic backhoe has been around since as far as when I first joined this forum, which was 10 years ago. Such intense interest is understandable: a backhoe is one of the most complex, if not the most complex vehicle for a Technic model, since it has a lot of functions while its main body is rather compact. Hence, as I see it, a backhoe is like an apex of Technic or at least Technic construction machines. Yet there are not many official Technic backhoe. Before this year the most recent iterations were 8069, a medium sized backhoe set released in 2011, and 42004, a mini version released in 2013. That means there was a whole inte…

I must say I was impressed by Lars Thygesen's design, particularly in three areas: The telelever suspension system The rear mono swingarm, which has the amazing advantage of not bending too much The simplified yet good-looking front panel design Using this as inspiration, I decided to retain these three elements in my own design. I took my single side valve engine design and modified the valve to use a cam, and made a special governor mechanism. When the engine speeds beyond a set RPM, the governor pulls away the intake cam and the engine coasts until the governor closes again. This pushes the cam back into place, allowing the cycle to repeat. I designed the valve so the 1x4 panel piece closes off the vacuum hose while allowing the cylinder to breathe freely. Under no load, the engine fires about once every 5-6 rotatio…

I'm trying to rebuild my old 8837 excavator after 30 years of storage and I noticed that the pump mostly doesn't work. For every 20 pumps, maybe one works and the others don't add any pressure (and in fact leak any pressure already in the circuit). I also noticed that the big piston leaks on the shaft seal (it retracts, but it doesn't hold pressure), and the metal shaft is blackened from what seems corrosion or residue of a rubber seal. It holds pressure normally in extension though. I tried to open them to see what's happening but felt that if I pushed harder I would damage them. I checked on bricklink and both parts are available but, being old parts, I fear t…

A few months ago I decided to bite the bullet and order 3 of Lego's new 2L driving rings from the McLaren P1 so I could keep my parts up to date (and because I mostly build with studded Technic parts). I've been experimenting with manual transmissions with shift linkages using the new shift forks. I ran into problems getting the rings to hold in or out of gear like my 3L rings can. Is there a reliable way of getting the rings to snap into gear and hold position?

  49. Hi everyone! I'm new to Eurobricks, so don't know if this is the correct forum for this topic. However I really want to share my recent findings about Mould King Servo Motor. I spent last weekend testing MK Servo Motor and MK 4.0 controller with a LEGO Technic MOC. MK 4.0 has a controller with analog sticks, so one can think that it supports proportional control for motors. However there are many controversial reviews about this on youtube/reddit/forums etc. It seems that proportional steering was supported by MK some years ago, but they dropped it (probably) due to problems with fluttering and quick battery drain. Part 1. Out-of-the-box MK ca…
