Anyone else ever wished for this?

Nope. I build many MOCs, none of which would be covered by this and regearding the bag number - interesting thought experiment, but you have to sort all the parts to do it. You might as well just sort everything into part groups and then head off with the build - less overall work and probably a better result.

Has anyone else ever wanted more data on an elements usage other than just what sets it appears in?

Just as I was browsing Bricklink looking for flex axles in interesting colors, I thought: how nice would it be if the color guide would list the most recent year that the part appeared in any set, for every color. That would give me a quick glance on which colors are still current (and hence affordable new), and which ones are old (and hence wildly expensive and almost always used).

Any way to just gray out, or filter out old parts would be really nice. Same for filtering out old colors like "Light orange" that aren't used anymore. I still accidentally click Brown sometimes when I mean Reddish Brown.

Edit: for rebuildability purposes (by hypothetical people using my hypothetical instructions, and very occasionally real people using my real instructions), I rather not use part recolors that have been once in one set somewhere in 1990. A part that has been in one set in 2018 is much more likely to return and become more ubiquitous soon. This goes not just for Technic, but I'm designing a sculpture right now that needs a few old parts, but also quite a few recent parts such as 2x2 corner tiles and all those recent new small wedge plates and curved slopesand bows.

less overall work

Depends on your build style and how you like to build. The amount of work involved for re-kitting a set is not a factor for me.  When I buy a set used, I will sort it into its numbered bags as I disassemble it, using the instructions backwards to know when a bag is complete (if there were numbered bags) and usually only do this with very large sets like the 911 that I want to get the misb experience from. Otherwise it’s rip it apart, put it I’m my parts bins and I build it from there.

But seeing as I keep a LOT of my parts in built up models on the shelf, when I need to find a part, it would be a lot less work finding those parts when I need them for a MOC if BL had Info on where in the model a part is used and the only logical method of identifying location is by step number in the instructions.

@Erik Leppen

In Bricklink, if you go to a part, and then click a colour, you'll obviously get all the sets it appeared in, in that colour (which you can then sort by year)

But if you click the hyperlink at the top "Known Colours".. then it'll show you ALL colours, which you can also sort by year

https://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?itemType=P&itemNo=32202&in=A&v=1&oV=Y&srt=2&srtAsc=A

So I can easily see that a 16L Soft Axle, in Red, last appeared in 2011, in the 8070 Supercar

I got another package today, I now have 17 of Part #64179 in the new Black colour.

Also got more of #18654 in Black and White. So my plan for 42056 is, where possible - replace LBG parts with Black. Use Black pins and overall keep the inside frame Black and the outside body all white.

Use White bushes, Black axles... I do have some Technic axles in White, once I build I will decide as I go along.

I plan to ducument my build with pics, will create a new topic as and when ?

Outside body all white?  Two very important pieces don't exist in white

24 parts don't exist in White, namely panels. #6538c do not exist in White, but #6538b does.

I have a plan, purists might balk, but hopefully the panels in question will appear in future sets and can be swapped out then.

For now I will have to improvise.

So you are looking to borrow some parts from Lepin copy. Why bother building a model with a mixture of both LEGO and Lepin then? What kind of blasphemy is this?

Strawman argument. Richard said nothing about clone bricks. I'm sure you have heard of the idea of painting parts, which is also an option.

It's only 24 parts out of 2,700+

The reason you would use genuine Lego is obvious, tolerances and how parts go together. The panels are a different story, I am confident we will see future sets using White panels.

But this isn't a clone, this is a custom colour matched build, inside and out.

I am using rare and expensive parts to pull off a certain look and polished finish.

I have a question: Does anyone know a good stepper for a gearbox, one that is NOT using rubber bands but a shock absorber instead?

I think I saw one sometime somewhere but I can't remember and now I can't find it.

No that's not it. That is the whole gearbox with new orange Bugatti selector. I need just the stepper, which will I later connect to the regular old shifter.

Thanks for trying.

I need help with something:

1. Is it better to combine 2 pneumatic pumps (blue ones) into 1 channel and then use that channel to power the rest of the pneumatic cylinders (in this case 7)?

2. Do I need to use air tank for this system?

3. Can 2 pneumatic cylinders be operated in the same time on 1 (blue) pump? Does the pump create enough pressure for this?

And also:

  1. Yes.
  2. No, but if you have an auto-valve (like this) or a pressure gauge, it would be better to have one.
  3. Yes, it has enough pressure, but it has a low air flow rate, so they will move very slow
