Go ahead and spend your life within the constraints of YOUR surroundings

There is no other way. If you break the limit, another one is right at the horizon

You should get a 3D printer, then you could eliminate those pesky LEGO bricks all together

Before this escalates; let's stick to the part discussion, instead of debating about "being a purist, cutting parts and so on".

Jim,

Thanks for jumping in and bringing in some civility. My point was not to escalate or start a virtual fight. This is a hobby after all and each one individual (person) has their own approach/expectation. Unfortunately some younger (aka immature) members on here do not yet understand that each person is entitled to do what THEY want with their bricks. I hope such members 'open-up' and accept the great diversity (of ideas) in this forum.

Happy building/displaying/MOCing/trading/speculating/cutting ... or whatever it is you do with YOUR legos.

Cheers

Part #15100 is rather interesting and can have numerous uses, i was thinking it could be used to route pnumatic hoses?....like a cable tie/guide etc.?

Would a 4mm pnumatic hose fit through the pin hole?, would other types of flexible hoses or pastic tubes fit through the hole?

Yes part #15100 can accommodate pneumatic hoses. It has the same/standard ID (Inner Diameter) as the holes on all beams/liftarms.

Just spotted another part in a colour i had not seen before, though this part has been out since 2012...i only came across it yesterday.

Part #87082 is now available in Red: http://www.bricklink...&colorID=5&in=A

+ a 1x11 liftarm in Tan colour: http://www.bricklink...&colorID=2&in=A

Part #41530 is now available in Flat Silver: http://www.bricklink...colorID=95&in=A

The Flat Silver part #78c02 is now back in production as well, it has been used in several old Technic sets such as 8466: http://www.bricklink...colorID=95&in=A

The White panels used in Technic 8262 from 2009 are also now back in production for 2014: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=61071&colorID=1&in=A

This part also looks interesting: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=18587

Rather than posting links, when you go to Bricklink, right click on the picture and select 'Copy Image', then paste into your EB message, and Voila! The picture shows directly (instead of the link). Much faster for the reader, and they also get all pictures at once. Plus, this does not count against your max size allowance on EB.

Yes, but 8466 can often be found for cheap, like $50

$50?!? Where? Even though the price of a lot of classic Technic (pre-2003) has come down quite a bit, I've never seen a used 8466 for less than $170, even on Bricklink. I paid $400 for a new one in 2012. I have tons and tons of rare parts that I plan on someday sorting and selling on BL, and I've come to learn the basic gray/black turntable found in some many models in the 2000's is an expensive part to buy now?! Wow, I've got probably 20 of them from parting out sets for MOCs.

And why in the name of all that is glory is the 8288 Crawler Crane that retailed at $50 in 2006 selling for over $500?!? And it was higher before the price on that started dropping as well. I can recall seeing some for $700-800 not that long ago. What is so superspecial about that crane? Everything is manually operated, the piece count may be high, but its mostly pins and just normal Technic pieces. About the only thing that is different about the pieces are the 2 boat weights to keep it from tipping over. I have 2 of them, 1 built, 1 new. Geez, maybe I should sell the 2nd one. I bought 2 so I could make both the crawler and tower crane.

I saw an 8275 for $1200 AUD once WHY?, i'm sure i could get most of the important parts for less than 200, why would i bother with $1200 (about four recent flagship sets) just because its new?

Because the seller is hoping someone will pay that much for MSIB. Whether anyone will pay him that much is another matter. Who knows if he will get lucky. You can bricklink the parts for $200 and you see no value in sealed box. It is recommended you not bother with that 8275.

Hmmm...i dont think i did it right, did i?

Its scalping....madness to expect $1200, as stated you can buy almost all of the parts brand new and build it yourself!

That is what i did, i bought a second hand set because i wanted the rare Metallic Silver parts. I kept those and cleaned them up.

Then i bought all the other parts brand new, i bought the manuals for 8285 on Ebay for €18and they were in mint condition!

So i got a brand spnaky new 8285 for a fraction of the cost being asked on Ebay.

I did they same with 8275, the only really expensive parts were the yellow wheels, which i bought brand new for €5 each and those ultra rare cylinder bracket #53178.

I paid €40 for 4 of them on Ebay, It was €9.50 per part....not bad considering i see them going for €20 or more.

Even the rare part #32529 in yellow i bougt for €1 each!....great bargain.

Once again with 8275 once i secured the rare/hard to find parts i then bought everything else brand new. I haven't built 8275 as yet as i still have to get the power functions elements.

But overall i can now build 8275 from brand new (95% brand new) parts....to hell with these crazy BNIB prices being asked!

8288 is a good exmaple of price inflation....some INSANE new prices being asked, but i dont see too many second hand sets being offered for sale either?.

You could part it out, but it has unique parts such as those 500mm strings that are ultra rare and you can build the set without them...frustrating!

These prices are why i have taken to in the last year of buying in big lots of new parts, and if i spot rare/quique parts i buy them...for a rainy day.

Eventually i will collect enought parts to build all the old/rare/expensive Technic sets...and they will be build from new parts :-)

Spotted a few more Technic parts in new colours that i want to point out.

Part #60169 is now available in Sand Blue: http://www.bricklink...v.asp?S=70131-1

Has anyone ever found any use for this 16L technic beam?....i was thinking it would work better in 8067 rather then the standard 1x15 Black beam? http://www.bricklink...Item.asp?P=2351

Just money

How much money? I would think it could be something like "You can have part X in color Y, but that will reduce the part budget by 35 parts." for a larger set, that would not matter as much, but for a smaller one, it could be a deal breaker.

Not sure I understand? Are you paraphrasing a TLG designer vs TLG beancounter conversation?

Pretty much, even if I have no actual experience with how it actually works within Lego. Also, after the year 2000 era, when Lego was having some tough times, I think the bean counters were being more conservative, and still are. I was thinking, since Lego is on top of the world again, could they maybe relax the budget limits a little bit?

Posted

Problem is that TLG's machinery is running fulltime none-stop and logistics is extremely complicated + planned a long time into the future. I doubt that even if you throw real silly money at them you can't get a thousand liftarms in pink or whatever

Posted
Those machines still need an expensive mold.

And as far as I know they require different mold for different colors of the same part. Not sure if each color requires separate mold, could be that some group of colors may have similar specs and could use same mold. This is due to various color additives used and properties of final colored plastic.

So, I wanted to say, that with stated above TLG might need to investigate and test certain part/mold/color combinaton first, for color consistency, strength, dimensions, some other tests, which costs time and money. Just imagine overhead required just for "your specific color order".

Yeah, I think Bricklink might be a lot easier.

They use the same mold for all their colors. Except some of the common pieces they have more than one mold ( i.e. 2x1 brick or 3x5 liftarm) to make two or more colors at once. The machines can feed any color for production.
