TheOneVeyronian Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Ah... the catch for me is "Facebook, Instagram or Twitter". I have no desire to join any of those sites at all (no, not even for a solid gold mask ), so count me out, but still sounds like a very interesting and innovative contest. Plus it's pretty fair and doesn't necessarily rely on talents. Not that I'd be very good at it anyway, I am terrible with seeing faces in things (aside from the famous vase/two faces illusion of course). Unless it's seeing a face in the front end of a car, then I'm world class Quote
Nekchir Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 I don't think hosting this type of contest is such a good idea...I can totally see people taking advantage of 'finding faces' by finding random pics on the web or plagiarizing others entries. That's of course Lego doesn't check entries' sources. Quote
Dorek Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 I'm sure there will be some kind of final check for veracity. I'll totally try and enter, I think it sounds neat. Quote
Scarilian Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 (edited) Contest sounds nice, seems they are giving out all the toa masks. Wonder if you might win a mask varying on what elemental face you enter... The fact that their will be 36 winners is impressive and definitely a good reason to enter :3 Its probably best to enter once in each of the weeks, with a varying elemental face each time 6 Winners of the week will be chosen among the entries received between March 30 – April 5. 6 Winners of the week will be chosen among the entries received between April 6 – April 12. 6 Winners of the week will be chosen among the entries received between April 13 – April 19. 6 Winners of the week will be chosen among the entries received between April 20 – April 26. 6 Winners of the week will be chosen among the entries received between April 27 – May 3. 6 Winners of the week will be chosen among the entries received between May 4 – May 10. 6 Overall Winners will be chosen among the 36 weekly winners of the week that submitted their entries between March 30 and May 10. I don't think hosting this type of contest is such a good idea...I can totally see people taking advantage of 'finding faces' by finding random pics on the web or plagiarizing others entries. That's of course Lego doesn't check entries' sources. Yeah, worried about that aspect also. Can easily see someone finding a bunch of face-looking images online and entering them all. Is there a limit to entries? Now I'd like to know if I'm the only one that only concerns myself with Bionicle and strictly Bionicle. I miss the YouTube community... I was tempted to do that, however ended up seeing the Ultron Sentrys and decided upon making an army of them :P The community still exists to an extent, its just changed and is not what it used to be as many older members have moved on from Bionicle at this stage. Usually it's all I budget myself for, but if there's another set that catches my eye, I won't say no out of hand. I'll certainly be going for the Vader set this year, and Greivous if he looks good. Hopefully Greivous will be good, i believe he's the most expensive set and has more parts than Vader... so finger crossed... wonder when we'll see images of those... Aanchir Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Or you could draw some random lines in the dirt and say it's Onua's mask. Too bad that none of the masks have specific names. It makes it really hard to refer to one of them specifically. Well, they sort of DO have specific names. "Mask of Earth" is about as specific as "Kanohi Pakari", which literally meant "Mask of Strength". The only difference is that with the English names you usually can't drop the words "Mask of" and still have people know what you're talking about, but I don't think that's a huge burden unless you've got a character limit. I love this contest! It's great that LEGO came up with a concept that demands creative thinking but is not a contest of skill like an art or building contest would be, so younger and less experienced fans do not feel excluded. It's also a fairly unprecedented type of contest for LEGO, and it should present a reasonable challenge for fans of all ages! Quote
Shakar Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Bit late, but most of the sets I buy are constraction, ever since BIONICLE started in 2001 (Though I did buy some medieval/fantasy themed sets during 2005/2007). These days I buy HF (then)/BIONICLE (now), some sets from the "secondary" constraction theme from that year for parts (the so called Ultrabuilds) and some small sets I like (mostly CMFs). Likewise, this year I'm getting most BIONICLE sets, some minifigs and some Star Wars figures (Darth Vader for sure, the first time I buy an Ultrabuild for its design rather its parts). Quote

That's of course Lego doesn't check entries' sources. There are ways to search an image. TLG could take a submitted entry and see where else it pops up. As long as they do that for "suspicious" entries it should be relatively ok. Yeah, worried about that aspect also. Can easily see someone finding a bunch of face-looking images online and entering them all. Is there a limit to entries? There doesn't seem to be a limit to entries, though if someone's uploading dozens by the method you described, I'm sure TLG would make sure they're legitimate original images. Quote
arc Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 (edited) The Contest is definitely interesting, I don't have an account on any of the sites they listed, but if i see something good I might be tempted to make one. and is there a way to view the terms without logging into Facebook? As I don't have one. Edited March 30, 2015 by arc Quote
Dorek Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 For anybody looking for some inspiration, Christian Faber recently posted how he saw an "Iron Man" face in the side of a building; it's this kind of creativity that I'm sure the contest hosts are looking for! Quote
dviddy Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 I wonder if my kakama tattoo would count! :D Quote
Leewan Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 and is there a way to view the terms without logging into Facebook? As I don't have one. There is. BTW, there are already some entries on Facebook (I haven't checked the other sites), but some of them really don't look like masks, like this one (Kanohi Bhukhett ?). Quote
Kalhiki Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Wonder if you might win a mask varying on what elemental face you enter... That's what I think'll happen. If you submit a red face and win for that week, you'll get Tahu. If your red face wins as an overall winner, you'll get the gold Mask of Fire. BTW, there are already some entries on Facebook (I haven't checked the other sites), but some of them really don't look like masks, like this one (Kanohi Bhukhett ?). So creative! It's a one-eyed smiley face! That's it, no point in entering. This is clearly going to be the winner. Quote

Was about to post that too! Does anyone know if slight photoshopping is allowed to show what I mean are the eyes, mouth etc? And I'm just waiting for that one person to take a picture of Tahu's actual face and use it as an entry.... Definite win there! Edited March 30, 2015 by legozebra Quote
Dorek Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Does anyone know if slight photoshopping is allowed to show what I mean are the eyes, mouth etc? I would think not; if it's not apparent from the photo, then it's probably not the best of examples, y'know? Depends on how slight, I guess. Something to ask the contest hosts! Quote
MakutaOfWar Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 This competition is just so slapped together. I'm sure they could have come up with something more creative. Quote
DuckBricks Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 This competition is just so slapped together. I'm sure they could have come up with something more creative. Creativity, you say? Well, we all know the competition was Lego's last-ditch effort to come up with more creative mask designs after making all the Protectors have he same mask... ;) just kidding I actually think it's quite a creative competition, and certainly less repetitive than the countless building competitions... WARHEAD Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 Don't see anything wrong with another building competition, Lego is about building things after all.. This competition does seem really interesting though, especially since I already love looking for faces in things. What I'm wondering about though is the criteria by which they'll judge the entries, the video was really vague about that. Quote
TheOneVeyronian Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 I notice that they're not giving away one of the golden masks in this contest, but six of them. One for each corresponding element. Interesting, I wasn't expecting the six Toa masks to be given away in this competition. The more I read this, the more it seems that I want to join in and go looking for faces in things, but I know I can't since I dislike such social media (personal reasons) and will never use it So after this, there'll only be the golden Mask of Creation left to give away, right? I wonder what sort of competition or sweepstake LEGO will adopt for that one? If they are giving it away of course. Quote
Clone 01354 Productions Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 This actually sounds like a really creative contest! I don't have any accounts on those social media sites, but I may have to make one...... BTW, I think I have a good chance here. There is a mountain right next to my house, and one of the rock formations on it looks exactly like a classic 2001 Miru. Quote

At least the Protector's masks resemble a Arthon/Gelu helmet hybrid, both of which I loved the looks. ...though full remakes of the Turaga's masks would have been awesome. ç.ç Quote
Kalhiki Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 but I know I can't since I dislike such social media (personal reasons) and will never use it Simple. Make an account, then once the contest is over, delete it. I had to get a Twitter account for school. I was going to delete that account, but now I'll just keep it a bit longer until the contest is over. Quote

Mandate Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Ugh, seeing as I don't have a Smartphone there's no way I'm competing in this. I'm not carrying my camera around with me for 6 weeks in hopes of winning when there's such as tiny chance. Quote
Logan McOwen Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 (edited) Cool to see Lego playing on the idea of Pareidolia! This should be a fun contest :) And I honestly don't understand the hate for social media. I mean, we're all communicating on the internet right now... Facebook, Twitter etc. are pretty bloody similar in that regard, just a little more instantaneous. That, and there's tons of great communities for Lego fans away from Eurobricks and BZPower - the Piece Out FB group for example, is a superb little community of constraction MOCists. Also, the Bionicle tag on Tumblr has some fun characters within it. Edited March 31, 2015 by LewiMOC Quote
DraikNova Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 The best mask-like face I've ever seen was on a road trip to Italy. One of the rock formations on the side of the road looked exactly like the 2001 "skull"/MU's head. Quote
