"You might be right. Then again, this is the Hovels, a place so ...uncivilized that the rest of the city walled it off. This is a barbarous place, certainly, and there are plenty of similar ones outside the walls in Eubric proper, but there are also wonderful people, families, children, art, culture... much more than killing at will."

GuardB.jpg

"Geezard and Giselle were right, Matthias. It does us no good to ignore what the wall is really for. It is meant to cage these people. You think they are unable to aspire to more? The Hovels are dangerous, but can produce greatness just the same as any part of this city. You can't honestly tell me that the rich produce fewer bad eggs than the poor." He points to the wall in the distance. "That has only served as a barrier. It says to these people 'this is as far as you can go, so don't try to go further'. It has made this a part of the city that will feed on itself."

IMG_2573_zpsyyqvv5os.jpg

"Zane began as a slave here in the Hovels," says Parvati defensively. "And he has ascended higher than anyone else in Eubric. This is Eubric proper, as far as I'm concerned."

"Yes, I have... intimate knowledge of that. A rare breed? Nonsense, I'm nothing special, I'm just someone who does what he's told, even if he does it badly."

IMG_2571_zpszmzquhiw.jpg

"I am sure you do not do things badly." Solimon smiles curtly. "Who, pray tell, instructed you to join Heroica? If you are one who only does what is instructed, as you say."

"It depends on if being a hero is what I'm being paid to do."

"A man after my own heart," says Everyman. "You'll do just fine here."

Darksten ponders for a second before speaking

"Sure, every city is a mixture of good and bad places. Yet Eubric seems so much more...disorganized. Certainly diversity is good, but as you say Ma'am, it does seem to be no better than roaming bands of barbarians.

I think the problem is that there is no clear leader, no stabilizing force. In the woods the food chain keeps everything in balance, and I think we need an alpha predator here to keep those below them in check. The fact that not even the watch's pay comes from a single source is concerning.

Tell me though Sir, is there a particular house that the majority of the Watch is most supportive of?"

IMG_2573_zpsyyqvv5os.jpg

"Zane could lead. But I don't think he wants to." Parvati grins. "I think he'd say: eat or be eaten. But maybe that's what a good leader would say, in the forest."

GuardB.jpg

"Mostly it's all delusions. They'll serve whoever they think will give them the largest leg up. Some lean Bonaparte, others Hinckwell, still others Shadeaux. Guild of Invision has got a few. The Ji Pei still fewer... and I don't know any, 'kept maybe a secret magic user or two, that would align with the Zeigfrieds. But again, we're not all sell outs. There are more than a few guards who are truly dedicated to helping the city, even if opinions on how to do that vary."

OoC: We will move along tomorrow morning to the next phase. I'll be on vacation this weekend, so updates may be slow.

The argument he feared upon him, Matthias dismisses the heat of anger and keeps himself calm for the good of the party. "Leadership? Eat or be eaten? If you truly believe that about Master Zane, how can you believe the things you say he has done for you: looked after you, provided for you... And if he has risen so high, where are his achievements? Locked up in his insanity, where they help no one." Try as he might, a little bitterness seeps out of the gnome. "Yes, I admit these walls were built to contain - I even said as much already. And I admit that there is not more civilization on the other side of the walls, or less, just a difference of cultures. I think Master Darksten is right - I think that without a king, the land is lost, yet Eubric celebrates that lack. But I still prefer the other side of these walls. There are places there a gnome can have a cider in peace... but I haven't found any such place in the Hovels."

"You are right..." answers Parvati thoughtfully, as if she has never considered this before. "I guess he would not say eat or be eaten. He could have consumed my soul, after all, and received my powers. But he did not."

GuardB.jpg

"As for cider, you should try Lady Luck's Locale. I'm not sure I would be welcome there, but I think it's a more than safe place, if rumors are to be believed."

"If we're all done swapping favorite bars," says Andrew. "We're here."

The heroes are at the end of an alley. A door that doesn't quite fit in it's frame hangs loosely from rotten hinges. It is dark inside, but the heroes can hear faint voices and the stink of sweat and cigar smoke.

IMG_2676_zpsgvl3hfxr.jpg

IMG_2029_zps4ca06d20.jpg

"Knowing you, heroes, if this was still your operation we'd be busting the door down weapons drawn. Trouble with that is that the Native Sons, like all gangs, have a hierarchy. If we go in the front, the mooks will hold us off while the big bosses escape out the back. We don't want that - if you want to know where your sister is, and if Bert and I want to make this a good arrest, we're going to need all of them."

"So, best thing to do is to divide and conquer. Bert and I will take two heroes and bust down the door. Has to be us - if it isn't the Watch, and is a pair of foreigners, one an Orc, they might stand their ground. The winged one and no-hands can take two heroes and wait around the back way to stop the bosses when they make a break for it."

"Any questions?"

How would the heroes divide themselves?

"Oh, I do, you'd be surprised at how many failures my life has produced."

He drew in his breath.

"I'm... no one, in fact I'm not entirely certain how I joined, I just walked in one day by accident. In fact I shouldn't even be a member, it's technically a violation of diplomatic... nevermind."

"No, seems simple enough. I have no preference where I go." Edited by Lord Duvors

"Throlar and I, being the two lowest leveled, could go with the Town Watch. Darksten and Matthias could go for the bosses, because they have the power to do so. I could use a nostrum, smelling salts, and mead on Matthas and those bosses wouldn't stand a chance. I could drink the other mead and a mulled wine myself, so I won't be completely useless myself. We could rip right through them like this, but the plan's not up to me."

"I was thinking you and I should stick together, actually, so I can keep you alive," Matthias grins cheekily at the knight. "Master Darksten, why don't you and Master Throlar head around back with Master Soliman and Lady Parvati, and Master Cedric and I will bust down the door with the Watch? Anyone have a different plan?"

"I'd..." Darksten starts, ready to say he would rather stay with the human Watch rather than the...mutant...contractors. But saw the tide quickly changing against him so decided against it "...go where ever the team needs me."

"After all..." he thinks upon reflection "...as long as that thing doesn't start another dang sandstorm, an open back alley could give me a better shot."

"It is worth considering that that cannon the gnome has could clear a group of henchmen faster, thus reuniting the teams sooner. Them the team in the back just has to stall, verses defeat entirely."

Ooc: I am down with whatever plan... However, Matthias would bring an AoE attack to the front group whole Solimon and Parvati would provide opportunity for some AoE coverage in the back (if I am reading everything right) .

"... Fine."

Throlar handed over the requisite items, though he was obviously loth to do so, he then removed his Crow helmet and equipped his Quiver of Homing Arrows, before downing a nostrum.

OoC: Stickfig, please boldly state the final plan. As I said, I am on vacation this weekend, but hopefully will be able to post the battle tomorrow, though the pictures will come Monday. This is the first quest in a while I didn't take pictures for beforehand save for a few, and it is not paying off.

Matthias looks from one party member to another as they shuffle about with their ideas, wondering what each one of them is actually thinking behind the words. Hearing only muted objections, he charges ahead. "Ok, Master Cedric, you and I will knock a door down with the Watchmen; Master Darksten, you take the others around back and nab anyone who tries to run." Watching Cedric down the drinks, Matthias winces. "I know you're anxious to do some good and not be useless, but you just wasted those... their impact on you is negligible but used on Master Soliman, Master Darksten, or even myself they could turn the tide of battle. Please don't waste any more."

Composing himself, the gnome turns to Andrew. "Let's go."

OoC: As I said, pictures will come Monday or Tuesday.

Darkstan leads his team back out of the alleyway and around the block, finding what is most probably the backdoor to the operation. Andrew waits five minutes, then nods to the heroes. He busts down the door.

"City Watch. Assuming you behave, this won't be a problem."

The Native Sons do not behave. Three of them break for the back door, while the rest stand and face the heroes.

I think not!

Guard Andrew (NPC)

:poke::pir_yoda:

Matthias motions his party to form up, as they're slightly outnumbered. "Backs together lads, these gentlemen believe they're about to escape the Watch!" Tipping his hat towards Mook D with mock grandeur, the gnome commences firing. "A poisoned blade? How ...I would say rude, but I'll settle for 'forward thinking'. Master Cedric, Watchmen, there are five of them and only four of us so take your pick, but the smart one with the blade will do for me."

Battle Order

> Matthias: Extraordinaire v. Mook D

> Andrew: Halberd v. Mook A

> Bert: Halberd v. Mook B

> Cedric: Mopagsaber v. Mook C

(Mook E: Free hit v. Matthias, 16/2-6=2 damage)

Cedric attacks Mook C from the front row with Mopagsaber, and equips the Elven Shield as well.

OOC: According to the Wiki, Chicken Drumsticks grant a +1 to health, not power.

Cedric attacks Mook C from the front row with Mopagsaber, and equips the Elven Shield as well.

Matthias reels Cedric back, keeping the knight from getting too close.

That's my bad, I originally forgot to put "back row" for everyone in my battle order above.

OOC: I took a nostrum before the battle, I should be lucky right now.

"Okay, I think Darksten should take the cleric and Parvati should try to blind her, Soliman should take the little guy, and that leaves me to deal with the bowman. This is just a suggestion you know, feel free to ignore it."

Throlar attacks Tubbs from the back row with his Fellcrest Hand Axe.

OoC: At work but noticing some things I shoul have/will edit in once I get home. The watchmen have a specific class that I've poste a few times but that I should have put in the post with them. For this battle Solimon's race is "Mutant" and Parvati's is "Orc".

EDIT: I've edited in the Guard info (slightly tweaked the class because I can!) and fixed the nostrum and chicken drumstick.

Darksten sees the leaders emerge, and quickly prepares to cut them down before they can flee. Hearing the dwarf offer his inputs, the assassin scans the situation and comes to similar conclusion before pointing out the respective targets to his counterparts.

Suggested Battle Order for Team #2
Soliman vs Shortround from Front
Darksten vs Melissa from Back
Tholar vs Tubbs from Back
Parvati vs Melissa from Back

"Here we go"

OOC: I am always open to suggestions (from either team) for the battle order/routine

OoC: I did miss the sun for pictures today due to work. Will try to remedy that tomorrow - depends on my work schedule which is still forthcoming. And Matthias, yes, Andrew does prevent the Mooks from fleeing, but if he is KO'd, that will change.

Native Sons Mooks Battle Round One

Mook E v. Matthias ([20*1.5]/2-6=9 Damage)

The Native Sons egg each other on as they take swipes at Matthias, jostling him about a bit. Cedric is able to whack one with the flat side of Mogsaber, sending him sprawling backwards snarling.
