As the guard strolls away Darksten cannot help but think that the whole situation was a bit odd, and should he have ignored the crowd and found out more about the corporal's job in the hovels... but the thought is interrupted by the outburst from his junior member and the proceeding rush of the party surging through the door to the court.

As the...thing... before him told his story, he tried to pick out the clues. Yet he had a few questions.

"before we run off to the bar, what makes you think your sister is in trouble?

As you mentioned, you don't quite need babysitting so I assume there is more to the story...

In particular, how long has she been missing and do you suspect a rival faction that you may have upset?"

"Matthias," says Solimon with the faintest flicker of happiness. "I was growing afraid that you'd lost your way."

"I'm not entirely certain I've found it," the gnome responds, playful words not hiding the truth they hold.

"Regardless, we are aware that the last place she was seen was at a bar she frequented. We should begin our inquiry there, but I thought it best to have some extra muscle that knew the city before setting off, and Parvati agreed. She's out in the city right now, by the way."

"Right," he said, "Where is this bar and how do we get there?"

"I suggest we meet up with Parvati. Why the need for extra muscle? The two of you didn't seem that helpless in Baltarok," Matthias adds.

"As you mentioned, you don't quite need babysitting so I assume there is more to the story... In particular, how long has she been missing and do you suspect a rival faction that you may have upset?"

Matthias nods agreement with Darksten's insightful questions and scans the room to get a good sense of the 'clubhouse' before they depart.

Throlar nodded.

"Right," he said, "Where is this bar and how do we get there?"

Babeleth, he thought, why am I not surprised?

IMG_2571_zpszmzquhiw.jpg

"It is a bar in the Hovels, called the Rat's Behind." Solimon grimaces at the name. "I imagine the easiest way to get there would be to walk."

"Before we run off to the bar, what makes you think your sister is in trouble?

As you mentioned, you don't quite need babysitting so I assume there is more to the story...

In particular, how long has she been missing and do you suspect a rival faction that you may have upset?"

IMG_2571_zpszmzquhiw.jpg

"Not my sister. Parvati's sister, Medusa. They are only friends of mine... teammates, I guess, much like you and your fellow heroes."

"I suggest we meet up with Parvati. Why the need for extra muscle? The two of you didn't seem that helpless in Baltarok," Matthias adds.

Matthias nods agreement with Darksten's insightful questions and scans the room to get a good sense of the 'clubhouse' before they depart.

Solimon nods thoughtfully as Darkstan and Matthias express their curiosity.

IMG_2571_zpszmzquhiw.jpg

"Fair questions," he concedes. "As Matthias says, and as you so aptly pointed out... as I say myself... we are not exactly in need of babysitters as far as brawn goes. But Zane may have underestimated something else about the sisters and I. We are not, as I've heard it said, 'city folk'. I was able to handle myself easily in the wilderness of Babeleth, and also in Baltarok, but there was not as much backstabbing, intrigue, mobs, poverty, betrayal... dark alleys... and the sheer number of those who may oppose us in a city obviously outstrips anything that either wilderness I'm accustomed to could offer."

"As for rivals, I know I have none. But the sisters and I have each explored the city very differently. I have spent most of my time in temples and libraries, and Parvati has spent most of her time marveling at architecture. Medusa has spent most of her time inside bars and picking fights, as she is want to do... so while I cannot imagine what rivals I may have acquired, I don't doubt she may have collected a number."

"As for Parvati, we will wait here for her before we set off."

And, as if summoned by her name, the door is thrown open and red faced creature with no hands thrusts herself into the space.

IMG_2573_zpsyyqvv5os.jpg

"No sign of her," she says mournfully before turning to face the room and spying the heroes. She smiles warmly at Matthias.

IMG_2573_zpsyyqvv5os.jpg

"So you've come to help me and my sister once again," she says. "Hello, everyone, I am Parvati, the Seer to the Court of Demons."

Darksten recoils a bit as the mutant corrects him, and he sheepishly focuses more on the words that the Vizier says. When Parvati joins them, the assassin nods and introduces himself.

"I'm Darksten, your friend here was just explaining the situation to us.

My follow on question is in regards to the bar. As it was the last place you said she was seen, I assume you have already visited there with little result. Were you there on the same day of the week as she was last seen, and/or will we be visiting the same day of the week? You see I am hoping we may be able to chat with some of the bar's usual visitors should the timing line up"

OoC: We will continue in earnest tomorrow, sorry, had a long work day.

"Hello there, Throlar Wineghilm at your service."

He held out a hand to the newcomer.

"Pardon me for a non sequitur, but I'm told you've been in Baltarok? Do you have any news from there?"

Parvati blushes as Tholar offers and then retracts his hand.

IMG_2573_zpsyyqvv5os.jpg

"I come from the west of Baltarok, the more uncivilized area. We are all wandering warring tribes. It is a bad place. I assume that you know the eastern region? That is the land most are familiar with."

The gnome gives a little tip of his outrageously tall hat.

Laughing quietly to himself, Matthias wonders how Parvati will handle a handshake.

"I was ignorant then and I am ignorant now, Solimon, Parvati. Tell me, what, precisely, is the Court of Demons?"

IMG_2571_zpszmzquhiw.jpg

"A nickname for our organization just as nonsensical as Heroica is to you. Perhaps you were founded as an organization to kill Orcs, but now you are helping them. In the same way, the Court of Demons, when originally created, was an organization in honor of Zoot and his vision for a chaotic world. The founding members themselves made a pact with a demonic being who Zane just calls Regret."

"But Zane is the only current member who comes from that time, and even he was only using the demons as a means to an end. Parvati, Medus and myself have made no pacts, and have no interest in a world of chaos. I would be lying if I said that we weren't like Zane. He was a slave here, when he was young. Parvati, Medusa and I have all been abused and oppressed, and I don't think anyone would find it surprising that we'd like the power to protect ourselves. But we have little to do with demons now."

"Kept people away in Baltarok, though, and has done the same here for the most part."

Darksten recoils a bit as the mutant corrects him, and he sheepishly focuses more on the words that the Vizier says. When Parvati joins them, the assassin nods and introduces himself.

"I'm Darksten, your friend here was just explaining the situation to us.

IMG_2571_zpszmzquhiw.jpg

"I'm afraid you'll think we've done none of the leg work, but no, we haven't been to the bar... I poked my head in to see if she was there, but one look at and smell of the clientele made me reconsider."

IMG_2573_zpsyyqvv5os.jpg

"I thought it was common practice to ask heroes to help with trouble," says Parvati sullenly.

IMG_2571_zpszmzquhiw.jpg

"As I was trying to explain earlier - Parvati and I are no strangers to combat. Babeleth and Baltarok are eat or be eaten... but a city is much tougher for us to navigate. There are so many factions, so many prejudices, so many people. In Baltarok it didn't matter who we ran up against, Pongcanis, Orc, human, elf... if they wanted to kill us, we had to kill them. But here there is so much more to consider."

"I don't think the drinkers there ever leave, so I'm sure you will be seeing the 'regulars'."

"Hello. I am Cedric, ready to start the job."

IMG_2573_zpsyyqvv5os.jpg

"Then let's go."

The heroes leave the clubhouse and make their way towards the Rat's Behind.

Posted (edited)

Though the assassin still finds the story a bit odd, he decides to keep it to himself. After all, he wasn't going to get paid sitting around questioning his employer.

As the team leaves the club house and makes their way to the first stop, Darksten does pipe up and asks a question.

"So what does Parvati look like anyways?"

"So what does Parvati look like anyways?"

IMG_2573_zpsyyqvv5os.jpg

"Yes, Parvati looks identical to me. Medusa just looks a lot like me." Parvati chuckles at Darkstan's continued blunders. "It is not so good a place," she tells Tholar. "It is dangerous to foreigners and those who live there alike. I would not advise that you go there unless you must."

The heroes walk into the Rat's Behind and are immediately assaulted by the dank air. Dust hangs stagnantly in the air, and the whole place is clammy. A number of patrons, drunk in the early afternoon, turn their half-aware gazes on the heroes.

"That's my sister. Have you seen her recently?"

IMG_2670_zps7czihuwq.jpg

"Get lost."

A voice calls out from the back of the bar.

"Howdy there! Are you looking for Medusa? I think I may know where she is!"

IMG_2670_zps7czihuwq.jpg

"Quiet him down."

The heroes hear a scuffle in the back of the bar, and a quiet "oomph" as a body slumps to the floor.

IMG_2670_zps7czihuwq.jpg

"Now I told you, get lost. This ain't no bar for orcs and freak shows."

Cedric draws his blade and points it at the drunken sailor. He says this, in a somewhat Diplomatic matter. "You know something. Tell me what you know about Medusa's disappearance, and you may live to drink your lazy megablocks off another day."

Cedric then eats the Level Up Mushroom that he won in the Lottery.

It was all too much... The insult of being in debt to a man half his size over a weapon he didn't want, his inability to find the clubhouse of the Court after studying hours in the library, and the repeated mistakes he had made in conversation painted him to look like a fool. All this added to the insistent nature of his fellow human hero to be overly aggressive caused Darksten to just about snap.

It was clear he was only good as added muscle here...

The assassin drew his composite bow and notched an arrow, keeping it pointed at the floor. His eyes however were planted squarely on the bar tender, daring him to pick up the blade in front of him.

Matthias rolls his eyes at the knight, though between his diminutive height and the brim of his hat it would be a miracle if anyone noticed. "Hush, man! Have you never been in a bar before?" he whispers at Cedric.

The assassin drew his composite bow and notched an arrow, keeping it pointed at the floor. His eyes however were planted squarely on the bar tender, daring him to pick up the blade in front of him.

Matthias wonders what he's gotten into with the current party. Has everyone lost their minds? First thing we do in a bar is draw swords and knock arrows, and in the Hovels no less. Taking a gamble on his own small size and hoping the others can hold their own without starting too much of a fight, Matthias attempts to duck to the back of the room, wanting a good look at the commotion and hopefully to find whoever knew about Medusa.

Throlar places his hand on his companions arm and attempts to lower it.

"That," he said, "is not diplomatic in any way whatsoever. Why not just stand down and let me handle this?"

Throlar, seeing Matthias attempt to sneak away, began speaking to the sailor in a diplomatic tone, attempting to distract the man's attention away from his companion.

"I apologize for my companions, they're morons, little more than hired muscle. I understand that you may have your own reasons for not wanting to talk to us about our friend, but she's very important to us and we'd like to find her. Perhaps we could work out a deal?"

As he spoke Throlar examined the man intently, trying to discern anything he could about him.

"Think I told you to get lost," drawls the sailor as he stands up, dwarfing the dwarf. "Your friend? The red-skinned green-skin. Yeah I know where she is, and it ain't pretty. But maybe," he says eyeing Parvati, "you'd like to join her. You know, not everyone is all lovey dovey with you greenskins. I hear that Heroica is led by one too."

15407776908_1560cbeacf_t.jpg

"Heroica?" asks another patron, drawing his sword. "They're always trying to pick fights helping out green skins. Bet they didn't know that the best sellsword in Eubric Freeport was in this bar." Natnail emerges from the crowd. "Name's Natnail. You bunch are always ruining my drinking and relaxing. Kicked the butt of one of your fat friends a few years ago. You look easy enough too."

Matthias reaches the back of the room just as the battle starts. Next to a shattered bottle he finds someone he sees almost as often and dislikes almost as much as Justin the pale-faced barkeep (and for the same reason, I'd think, that they are both cowards).

"Mmph, merp, medu..." mumbles Johnny Everyman.

"Oh sod you."

Throlar attacks Drunken Sailor Wermhiem from the front row with his Mopagsber.

"Okay, I'd recommend Matthias attacks Andy over there with that cannon of his, Darksten deals with Natnail at the same time, Cedric stabs Bernard a few time to keep him occupied, Soliman keeps the bartender occupied, and Parvati, would you kindly make it a bit brighter in here? Thank you all very much."

"Cedric, please, you'll barely do any damage to him as long as the others are still up, please attack someone else and let someone who can do more damage deal with him."

The words of his short companion are all that the assassin needed. Within a moment the bow was up and his arrow on its way. It wasn't as clean of a shot as he would have liked it, but his stress started leaving with it...

Someone needs to target Rat's Behind Owner. His free hit could doom us all.

"Gentlemen, you're both wrong," Matthias says drolly but with an unmistakable gleam in his eyes, "but Throlar, that barman is as good a target as any for our new knight, and Cedric, any opponent could doom us all. Just keep your wits about you and let's finish this off. We were supposed to be helping Master Soliman and Lady Parvati navigate the city and avoid stupid fights like this, remember?"

As the thrill of battle begins to work its way into Matthias' veins, the gnome grins mischievously. "I'll take the sailor boys - a little dark lightning from the Extraordinaire won't hurt a bit. Lady Parvati can help with Sailor Andy and Master Cedric can have his barman. Master Soliman, you get to take on the city wach - and all of you, no need to wade into the thick of things, I do hope you'll stay back and work." The gnome glances at Soliman again. "Except you big guy, get in there and give 'em some wind."

Battle Order with suggested targets and tactics (">" means fight from the back row)

> Cedric - Katana vs. Rat's Behind Owner

> Throlar - Bow vs. Drunken Sailor Werheim

> Darksten - Bow vs. Natnail

Soliman - Spear vs. Off-Duty Guard Donald (Dual Strike) [next targets: Natnail, Owner]

> Matthias - Fireball vs. Drunken Sailor Bernard

> Parvati - Spell(Earth) vs. Drunken Sailor Andy [next targets: Natnail, Owner]

Strategy Discussion: Matthias' cannon can take out the first two sailors and almost kill the third on a critical hit; if Throlar damages Werheim enough then a hit or critical hit from Matthias will kill him. Cedric won't do much damage but he increases our chance to avoid that (not at all world-ending, by Zepher standards) special on the Owner. Fighting from the back means he'll survive several hits from the Owner instead of dying on the second one. Darksten, Soliman, and Parvati don't have immediately visible niches for this fight, but they are all high damage and high (enough) health (for these enemies) so they may as well just divide the final opponents between them. And after this battle, Darksten needs to give Parvati that Pongcanis crossbow, which will make her spells more powerful.
