MagPiesRUs Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 (edited) This MOC is based on the myth of the Athenian king Theseus. Every nine years, Minos of Crete would take seven Athenian boys and seven Athenian girls and leave them in his maze, where a minotaur, half man half bull; would kill them. After a while, Theseus decided to fight the minotaur himself, and sailed to Crete. He used a ball of string so that he could find his way out of the maze once he had killed the minotaur. Here it is: Theseus' string: Theseus finds the Minotaur: Walls: Minifigs: Grrr! Enjoy! Feedback appreciated ;-) Edited February 2, 2008 by TinyPiesRUs Quote
ExoBuilder Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 That's a...creepy myth 8-| This looks great! Though I know nothing about it other then what you said, I like it *y* :-D The minotaur looks great, so does Theseus, though, he looks alittle too confident X-D Good job! *sweet* Quote
hollisbrick Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 for a guy thats about to be cut into peices by a bull, he looks pretty happy lol anyway great job!!!! its a *wub* ly moc! *y* Quote
Opproperaar Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 (edited) Very creative and original indeed. I remember translating the story from Latin in my first year of college. I decided not to do Latin anymore in the second year. The only fun thing about it was the culture - consisting of history lessons and myths. :-$ I remember coming up with the craziest of translations (e.g. I once translated a scentence from Greek which said "Grandpa reads a book." as "Grandpa eats a book.") :-D I like how well you built it and especially the walls somehow resemble how I always pictured the labyrinth. Well done, indeed *y* Edited February 2, 2008 by Hairy Ruben Quote
Eurobricks Emperor Bonaparte Posted February 2, 2008 Eurobricks Emperor Posted February 2, 2008 Very lovely MOC *wub*. I just love the story of the Minotaur. Some years ago I visited the ruins of the Palace of King Minos on Crete. I can't get enough of these MOCs based on history or myths. Quote
Asuka Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 A nice labyrinth and a very smart Minotaur indeed. *y* Quote
TheFrisian Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 Very nice vignette! You have a great eye for detail, like the ball of string Theseus is holding. The Minotaur is also very recognizable, which is kinda impressive since building a convincing bulls head on that scale was probably not easy. Quote
El Bucanero Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 I've always liked these Greek myths. You pulled this off really well! The minotaur looks very good. I'm not so sure about this though: He used a ball of string so that he could find his way out of the maze once he had killed the minotaur. Didn't he pray to Aphrodite to do something with the string so it would roll to the minotaur by itself? Not sure though. Just want to help :-) Quote
iamded Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 Awesome scene! I love the walls, the colours look great together. Ingenious solution for the minotaur, great job! *y* ~Peace Quote
Batbrick Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 Great job TinyPiesRUs! I love how you've designed the minotaur, very clever. He looks great too, though I would like to see better eyes than just the swivel clip. Theseus is great, if a little confident :-D The Labyrinth itself has a great, mythological style to it, and the string is a great touch too. Batbrick Away! >:-) Quote
Cardinal Brick Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 Another very well done MOC. The brick built minotaur is very good and a tad disturbing looking. Again as with all you scenes it's very well posed. You got the string in there excellent with the detail and quite a substantial and well made bit of maze and even one of the previous victims. Excellent Quote
Wout Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 I'm not so sure about this though:Didn't he pray to Aphrodite to do something with the string so it would roll to the minotaur by itself? Not sure though. Just want to help :-) I thought the daughter of the king of crete (called Ariadne) fell in love with Theseus and give him this thread so he could find the way back. There is a womans magazine about knitting in the Netherlands called after this princess and her thread. ;-) Quote
dragonboy79 Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 I thought the daughter of the king of crete (called Ariadne) fell in love with Theseus and give him this thread so he could find the way back. There is a womans magazine about knitting in the Netherlands called after this princess and her thread. ;-) Yes, and Theseus, being a jerk that he is, abandons her. She ends up marrying Dionysus, who remains faithful to her, and they spend their time together having drinking parties. Anyway, I like how you make the building non-Greek. The red and tan really brings the Minoan feeling. Quote
MagPiesRUs Posted February 5, 2008 Author Posted February 5, 2008 Thanks everyone :-) .. so does Theseus, though, he looks alittle too confident X-D for a guy thats about to be cut into peices by a bull, he looks pretty happy lol Theseus is great, if a little confident :-D :-D Hey, he's a hero who fearlessly went into the labrynth to kill the minotaur, and suceeded. He shouldn't be scared X-D Didn't he pray to Aphrodite to do something with the string so it would roll to the minotaur by itself? Not sure though. Just want to help :-) Hmm. In the one I read, (As Wout said) the princess of Crete gave him it so that he could find his way out again. Perhaps the one you mentioned is another interpretation of the story. Thanks again ;-) Quote
Doctor Sinister Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 I really like this. The old Greek myths are a good topic to recreate. The labyrinth is well realised, there's a lot of action in the scene and the Minotaur is well made and suitably large and scary. Do more! (please) *y* Dr. S. Quote
Lt. Col. Thok Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 (edited) I like how you incorporated the basic Tyrugah (Adventurers) design into the vig. *y* It adds that touch, and makes the minotaur beefier. Edited February 6, 2008 by Lt. Col. Thok Quote
