I bought a small amount of 70 'train parts.

The 4.5V engine (bb07) was inside, badly it was open
I took the opportunity to take pictures.

Great!!! This motor is quite rare in black!

Do the interior of blue and black motors exactly the same? there is a good chance they are since both were produced between 1967-69.
If so, then all he needs to do is the buy a working blue motor and replace the content of his black motor :-)

I think they are the same thing  since speed (and noise ) are identical on both colors.

I thought it existed only in blue

I have only one of these (in 116 set), the other set with black motor was on 119 set (the "Prairie Train") - but I have a later version of this set, which features a newer black motor with low profile - on Brickfactory there are two different scans of 119 instructions showing both motor versions.

As far as I know, these two sets are the only ones to use the black high profile motor. :classic:

Based on bricklink, there are 3 sets having this black motor, as it appears to me that the sets 118-3 and 119-1 are very similar:

As far as I know, I only have one blue motor. God knows it is now at the bottom of which box!
Maybe you could open your motors and take a photos and upload? If I find mine, I would do the same.

The motor case is clued.
You can view on pictures that the motor case have opening marks (when I buy it was already opened)
