Flavius Gratian Posted July 17, 2018 Posted July 17, 2018 (edited) George Sterling walked down the pier leading to Port Raleigh. At the end, he put down the chest carrying his belongings and stepped onto the sandy beach. Somehow, this pitiful first impression of the settlement: the lack of even a proper wharf - only a few wooden piers jutting out from the shore - didn't arise any feelings of despise or regret. Even though the small town, peeking out behind the thick vegetation, looked dwarfed by the naval squadron anchored at the mouth of the River Queens - the only ships in the "harbour" except his - George felt opportunity. Ever since the strange disappearance of Lord Erie Flynn, the settlement's founder and first Mayor, Port Raleigh had stagnated. Although being one of Corrington's earliest colonies in Terra Nova, it was now surpassed by all those following it, except for desolate Stormhaven and the military outpost Port Woodhouse. But now it would change. Already, some small devopments had been made: sugar plantations by George's friend Hugo Lavendwood followed by a mill and factory. George could feel where the wind was blowing and he was going to be at the forefront. A younger son of a junior branch of one of Belson's prominent merchant families, he had never gotten the opportunities he desired by his uncle, head of the family business. Now George was taking his destiny in his own hands and moving to the Colonies, where opportunities were abundant. Looking out over the mouth of the river again, he could already picture all that he would accomplish. Edited October 9, 2018 by Flavius Gratian Quote
Bregir Posted July 17, 2018 Posted July 17, 2018 Cool story and nice vignette! Good to see a more permanent presence in Port Raleigh. But be careful... If you don't watch, you may end with a mayorship on your hands one day! ;) Quote
Ayrlego Posted July 18, 2018 Posted July 18, 2018 A nice little vignette to illustrate your story and introduce your new character. I look forward to seeing him develop Port Raleigh! 5 hours ago, Bregir said: If you don't watch, you may end with a mayorship on your hands one day! Quote
