Sir Kingston Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 (edited) After a merchant vessel noted a fire and what appeared to be shipwrecked sailors, closer inspection a patrol vessel showed possible signs of illicit activity. Lieutenant Karlton had just arrived to the King's Harbour where he was to be temporarily garrisoned. A naval officer approached him and tasked him with the investigation and destruction of possible criminal activity. Karlton was given two boats, some explosives, and 10 Royal Marines. Unlike many of his peers, he preferred to carry a musket, which brought many rumors. One Marine suggested he was a poor sergeant who rose up from the ranks, a corporal replied, "Nonsense, he's fresh from academy", another junior officer overheard their conversation and retorted saying, "Mr. Millbrooks, that's enough, you know better than to question a Queen's Officer." This officer was unsure himself of him, and noted that he was well groomed, but seemed to be both nervous and agitated. Karlton however, was entirely unawares of this and continued his preparations. He was indeed nervous, but attempted to hide that through his rough tone. He was off to a late start already, and the private vessel that was to ferry him out, had been waiting for almost half an hour. Karlton paid the captain, and they were off. As they rowed toward the shore, the faint glint of a looking glass was seen ashore. Not wanting an opposed landing, he disembarked swiftly and led shore party into the forest. LM71Blackbird Posted April 11, 2020 Posted April 11, 2020 (edited) @Sir Kingston I good start to the GoC! Some good story telling in the making for sure! As to the picture. On flickr, when you click the share button, if you go to the BBCode tab and copy and paste that link into the thread it will show the picture instead of just the URL. Also for your topic title it may help to format it as such: [COR - GOC] Raid on Cocovian Smugglers Lastly, which task is this for? Adding footnotes is never a bad idea for any build. Just some small bits out of character narration. On to the build! A nice little vignette for sure. I do like the terrain variation, however, making it 'flow' instead of abruptly change color would improve the build in my opinion. Also, maybe a pic of the front of the landing party would be nice. Seeing the determination to catch the smugglers in the act or the uncertainty of the commanding officer. Edited April 11, 2020 by LM71Blackbird Quote
Sir Kingston Posted April 11, 2020 Author Posted April 11, 2020 I might continue this storyline with another “Redcoats Rule” vignette... Quote

Sir Kingston Posted April 12, 2020 Author Posted April 12, 2020 (edited) Snatch n’ Grab (extension of previous build, not GoC submission) Soon after their quick departure from the soft sands of the Cocovian, they encountered heavy resistance from the dastardly shrubbery- It was no match however for his corporal’s hanger. The smuggler’s path led right to their encampment, where they found two persons, having with them several pounds of the island’s best products. Karlton had them put in irons and read out his orders from the local government. The smugglers claimed to be traders from Eslandola, but clearly held no connections to any company or official organization. They also claimed that there were more traders, but Karlton wasn’t worried more as the whole operation would become charred ruins. His marines and the prisoners swiftly left the forest, only hearing a slight rumble from the destruction. They towed back to the merchant vessel, who had idly bobbled in the calm waters of the mid-afternoon waves. The soft breeze and the mild flap of the sheets left Karlton nothing to do but look out from the gunwales and ponder what lie ahead, there was always some talk of colonial claims possibly bringing the world powers to conflict, noting that the peaceful shores were just another innocent landscape yet to be tarnished by bitter blood. Karlton looked around, his marines were relaxing, the Sargent babbling on about some fish... https://www.flickr.com/photos/187742871@N04/shares/H0ua5H Edited April 12, 2020 by Sir Kingston Quote
Pdaitabird Posted April 12, 2020 Posted April 12, 2020 Great story - I'm looking forward to the continuing adventures of Lt. Karlton! Quote
Darnok Posted April 12, 2020 Posted April 12, 2020 Good work there, a lovely introduction! That second shot is done so well, I really like the "in action"-feel it gives to the scene. Well done! Quote
Bodi Posted April 13, 2020 Posted April 13, 2020 Nice vignette, it's a simple and effective way to display minifigs. My complaint is there's too much red and not enough blue. Quote
Ayrlego Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 Nice looking redcoats Sir Kingston and a great start to the GoC challenge. I'm not sure what level your collection is at, but to improve the scene the only recommendation I have would be to prehaps vary the levels a little by adding extra plates and vegetation. A slightly steeper slope between the ocean and the beach would I think lift the scene slightly. You could also try some transparent plates of tiles over the top of the blue water? All minor things. Does Lieutenant Karlton take some inspiration from Richard Sharpe by any chance? from me for GoC Quote
