Space78 Posted May 8 Posted May 8 The "retro" spaceships are "one-offs", so it makes sense to me that they have a shorter run. People who want them are going to buy them, but there's nothing to add to them (other related sets). Unlike themes that get multiple sets in the theme (City, Friends, etc.) where parents buy one set for a gift, then another at the next occasion, and maybe the kid gets some money and picks out another set, so all the sets support each other and you have ongoing sales. Couple that with the fact that there is a LOT more turnover in Lego offerings from year to year than there was 20+ years ago, and you end up with shorter life spans for many sets. There are always exceptions for very popular sets as has been mentioned or other reasons only Lego knows. I think GE was reasonably popular, but it ran its course. I got three sets when Walmart had them on clearance at the end, but it was for online sales only. Is the BR set carried in any big box stores? If not, that probably contributes to lower sales = shorter run. Quote
danth Posted May 8 Posted May 8 Honestly...I don't think the new Renegade is that good of a set. I could see it being much less popular than the Galaxy Explorer. Quote

I disagree with you about the quality of the set (I personally love it), but I could easily see it being less popular if for no other reason than Blacktron being less iconic/recognizable than Classic Space (running for fewer years and not getting boosts in popularity from things like The Lego Movie that keep Lego's "first" Space theme recognizable to modern audiences. That said, I also reckon Lego would factor that into their projections for the set's sales—which may have also informed the decision to keep this a limited release unlike the Galaxy Explorer's wide release for Lego's 90th anniversary. GeoBrick Posted May 9 Posted May 9 (edited) I'm happy with the set. I never even heard of the set before 2015, and as far as I could determine most of the complaints are because the remake wasn't truly asymmetric like the original. Sofar I only made a few cosmectic changes, I'm waiting for a certain ventral element to become available again on PAB before putting my ideas for the set to work. Edited May 9 by GeoBrick Quote

The original renegade only beeing avaiable in north America probably doesn´t help to. At least one of the target audiences should be people that had the original set as a kid and getting the remake out of nostalgia for it. Quote

They look even better than I imagined when I ordered them. Are North American orders still shipped from Billund? 2 hours ago, GeoBrick said: Nice. Medic would be a very suitable role for the blue astronaut. He was the only one I had hands in the right color for. Quote
Space78 Posted May 15 Posted May 15 Yes, says the GWP is available through 5/23 or while supplies last. Wonder if it will be gone quickly like the Micro Launchpad from last year? Resellers have listings on e-bay for $50 and up. Will be interesting to see how popular this GWP is. Quote
hikouki Posted May 17 Posted May 17 Gumball machine leaked! So just two generic spaceman each for teal and warm gold. Quote

Interesting collection of minifigs, $170 for the set is a lot just to get the space minifigs. I don't find the rest that interesting, and somehow no Redbeard minifig, which was prominently shown in the image of the winning submission?? Any rate, I think this was discussed earlier, but are the space minifig parts likely to show up at PAB so they can be purchased separately to build your own? Quote

Artanis I Posted May 18 Posted May 18 Of all the options I didn't want the gold to get through, but that's old news by now. Getting 2x2 in the set is obviously better than just 1, however most of the other minifigs aren't great, and the set's price seems a bit high. So I might just track them down separately. Quote

I liked the idea of the gold classic space but I did not vote for it. As much as I think it looks good, overall it did not feel "unique" because of the fact that gold minifig parts are quite common. I really liked many of the other colors that did not win. I feel that with a set like this, Lego could have just featured more than just the two colors that won the vote. Also, we are still missing a bright light blue space to complete the Every Classic Space is Awesome lineup. Quote

Well if that Game Island Tower set wasn't cancelled, we would've gotten that light blue spaceman, though we would have to switch out the legs as the were going to be trans light blue. Lyichir Posted May 18 Author Posted May 18 Gold was one of my preferences (due to both feeling like a "special" option instead of bloating the number of "regular" colors, and due to gold parts like airtanks being an interesting color for other genres like steampunk). I like the way the final fig looks and I feel like swapping the head for a plain gold one would make a great-looking statue (sort of like the white one from Space Police III). Teal was one that I was less keen on due to expanding the palette of spaceperson colors from primary (red, yellow, blue) and secondary (green, purple, orange) into tertiary colors (halfway between green and blue). Nonetheless in general it's a color I'm fond of and the fig does look good in it. I will say that the spacepeople are some of the least interesting ones in the set to me, taking up four whole slots with figs that barely vary from one another compared to the greater variety offered for, say, the castle figs (which get two knights of each distinct faction with different weapons and faces). I get that this is a consequence of the choice to offer both the winners and runners up of the poll, with classic space having been the chosen theme for Space, but nevertheless it is a bit regrettable that Classic Space gets the whole spotlight instead of another space theme maybe getting to share it. And swapping out is absolutely fine... parts are easier to hunt down these days compared to making that light gray space. All we need is just the printed toro (not even arms), air tanks, and helmet. I don't mind the teal because it can be the missing link between the green and the blue. Contrary to popular opinion, I liked the lime green a lot. although people call it bile green. I agree that the spacemen taking up 4 slots can be monotonous but the classic space fans out there, like me, are celebrating. What they could have done is just include one of each. The third would have been a runner up color. The fourth could have been a space theme not re-made recently. But Lego being Lego, they go the lazy way. Quote
karrit Posted May 18 Posted May 18 I liked every color for the Spaceman but the Gold. Gold minifig parts are common enough and without the other metallic colors to go with it I would have much preferred they stuck to the more colorful choices for the Spaceman. I wish they had just gone ahead & given us one each of all the color choices. Between the Spaceman & the Kraken Knight 1/4 of the figs in the set are basically the same color. Quote
hikouki Posted May 18 Posted May 18 Maybe with the popularity of this set, there will be a gumball machine 2.0 next year or the year after. Knowing Lego, they might stuff it at one point with more collectible F1s. Quote
danth Posted May 19 Posted May 19 (edited) I'm not as excited about the Prize Machine as I was. Many of the minifigs are...surprisingly disappointing. The Fabuland figures could have been ACTUAL Fabuland characters instead of people in costumes. I was hoping they'd use Chima or Animal Crossing heads or something. I'm really sick of Lego blowing chances to give us something awesome and amazing and instead giving us a reference. Like, just give us the actual thing! I love the viking helmets but they look weird with the dark green (teal?) masks. Like, I'm not sure what that's supposed to invoke. A ninja viking? A norse thief? Also the dark green makes it look more like a seaweed face wrap than a mask. Are these kelp zombie vikings? I have no idea. They look great without the masks, although it doesn't feel good to leave a fig "incomplete" in order to look good. The other knights are okay but I'm not fond of those helmets. Literally any other helmet is better. The pirate with the red hat is great, but the other one (Imperial?) looks like she desperate needs a hat to complete the look. Someone else said she looks like part of a marching band and I agree. I do appreciate that they're trying to give us new/different things here. New factions, different colors. I just feel like the execution is off. The Paradisa figs at least are pretty cool. The Spacemen are fine but I'm not super excited about the gold color (but that was already a given). I'm not sure who the black shirt lady is but the symbol on the shirt looks familiar. Lego fan or employee? Edited May 19 by danth Quote
