I always suspected you were a good dude, but now I'm sure of it. 2 hours ago, Lyichir said: None of these ones are jumping out at me the way the Mushroom House did, but my dad might be interested in the train. Same. I kicked myself for missing out on the Mushroom House, but eventually bought it on Bricklink for close to retail. Unfortunately I had to pay for shipping from Europe -- ouch. Quote

The mushroom house was so much fun. I built it over the holidays and I'm really looking forward to the village. I managed to find two extra CMF D&D Halfling Druids to populate it as I thought they matched nicely. Quote
Yoggington Posted January 14 Posted January 14 While I don't think Ill be shelling out this round, the promo for the Siege Weapons popped up in my feed and it's well made. Quote
RichardGoring Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Video review of the series 4 Medieval Seaside Market is out. It looks nicer than I expected and a pretty substantial size. I like some of the details that have been added into it, but in other areas it feels a few more could be added. In general, a positive impression. Although I don't think I'll get this one. PoBB, Viking Village, and the series 5 Thieves of Tortuga all have a higher priority, so I imagine this would get left unbuilt. Quote
RichardGoring Posted January 25 Posted January 25 And one on the Siege Encampment. It really does look great, but, as I've said before, it feels like you could halve the size and price and still have nearly as good an experience. The siege tower looks great. I really like how you can swap the shields, flags, and colours of the command tent to be either Black Falcons or Lion Knights. Very clever! Quote
JohnTPT17 Posted January 26 Posted January 26 I think I've turned a corner as far as my buying BDP sets goes... There's several that I like, but for the asking price, I might only be able to afford the ones that I love. I think the Siege Encampment looks good - but I don't know if it's $230 good (especially when the tents are mostly inaccessible). If I'm honest with myself, if there were regular retail sets, I would probably think "that looks nice - but I have other sets I would rather buy, and/or I'm going to wait for a 20% off sale." The only one that would make me jump out of my seat for a Day 1 buy if it was a regular set would be the Mushroom Village, if I'm honest with myself. That's not to say any of them are bad sets, or that they're overpriced, or I think they're not worth it - I just have to be more careful with my spending money and what exactly I want to purchase - even if it is rare or does look kinda cool. I'm even starting to rethink my Series 3 preorders... I may honestly end of cancelling them or finding someone locally who would want them instead. Still, if you're one of those people who does like one of these (or a furute one) - the more power to you! I just have to think about my own personal budget and space... Quote

Yeah, some of these definitely feel like the kind of thing you have to have room for. Like the siege encampment is a neat idea, but the shelf I have my Lion Knights' Castle on only has room for it—no room to add a whole siege party to it. But yeah, I feel like the Mushroom House and Village have been some of the most appealing yet, in part because they're NOT just trying to be massive expansions to existing sets/themes, but rather something fairly unique in and of themselves. There's no need for them to fit in next to official sets when they have such a distinct design identity that's not trying to compete directly with official space/castle/etc. releases. Quote
RichardGoring Posted January 27 Posted January 27 Another video review. This time for Riverside Scholars. Along with a brief look at the other four. I do like this one and will get it. Partly on its own merits, partly to match up with the other two in the series. 26 minutes ago, Lyichir said: But yeah, I feel like the Mushroom House and Village have been some of the most appealing yet, in part because they're NOT just trying to be massive expansions to existing sets/themes, but rather something fairly unique in and of themselves. Completely agree with you. The Mushroom House and Ocean House have been my favourites of the series so far, pretty much for this reason. Quote

The set is growing on me but good grief this is an awful review. Does he even like Lego? He sounds so bored, keeps letting the camera focus slip, calls things the wrong names.. I got a better idea of the set from the 30 seconds snapshot in Tiago's review of the Scholars set. I am not sold at all. I'm thinking I'll bricklink the parts for the modules here that interest me, and save my wallet for the next series. Quote

He's a pretty prolific LEGO Star Wars person and builds enormous scenes, but every time I see one of his videos, it really does come across as saccharine and a bit shill-like. I'm not really into Star Wars, but he started doing all the LEGO Ambassador stuff. Not a patch on Tiago, Racing Brick, or the best of the lot, JANG. But I got really annoyed in the last round when he did a video and a good chunk was essentially going on about the resale value, which this series just doesn't need. I haven't watch anything since, except this, because there are so few reviews out there. Quote
Yoggington Posted January 27 Posted January 27 (edited) Oh, here's the 4th review (the Merchant Boat). A bit extended, as it includes a timelapse build. Review proper starts at 6:40 It also gives an interesting insight into how Lego sends the sets to reviewers in a big aul' mess of a bag. The boat is massive! Too big for me, but looks good. 9 minutes ago, RichardGoring said: But I got really annoyed in the last round when he did a video and a good chunk was essentially going on about the resale value, which this series just doesn't need. Oh yes I remember this now. I think I must have blocked him at the time, because I'd forgotten him completely. Edited January 27 by Yoggington Quote

It is indeed huge. A lot larger than I expected. I built the Caravan Theatre from the same designer in the Bricklink MOC Pop-Up Store, and really enjoyed it, but it was pretty cramped, and I thought that this would be the same, as it has a similar build style - [Caravan Theatre] [BrickLink]. It was a really fun build. I wasn't going to get it, already having something similar, but I'm slightly more tempted. It is a bit dull in colour though, which is a shame. But at the same time, the function is really cool and I think my kids would love that. Hmmm... decisions. On the packaging, these preview builds are all packed by hand, so while it's not terribly elegant, it doesn't surprise me. Quote
RichardGoring Posted January 28 Posted January 28 Brickset has a review of the Wild West Train too - LEGO 910044 Wild West Train review | Brickset They referenced possible motorization, but that was it. I'm glad @kbalage is going to try it out on the RacingBrick channel. Looking forward to that video. Great review, and thank you! Quote
crowe-k Posted February 1 Posted February 1 (edited) I was only interested in the train this round but the Siege Encampment has grown on me a bit. Edited February 1 by crowe-k Quote

mark1991t Posted February 4 Posted February 4 No problems here with either the Bricklink website or the Lego website. Quote
RichardGoring Posted February 4 Posted February 4 I was shocked to not have any issues with the LEGO site at all. Not even a queue system! Ordered the Wild West Train and Riverside Scholars. So tempted by the Merchant Boat but I have the designer's Caravan Theatre from the MOC Pop-Up store which has a similar feel, and an unbuilt Monkie Kid HQ which is a large merchant boat type thing, so I just don't think I'd build this one. I may cave if it doesn't sell out. I will part together the siege tower, which is great, but I don't think I need the rest of the medieval stuff. Quote
sahidko Posted February 4 Posted February 4 After 20 minutes struggle I managed to make my order. I guess that's an improvement since last time. Quote
Lego Tom Posted February 4 Posted February 4 It took 3 browser windows and 15 minutes to get my train station order OK'd by LEGO. Oh well. Quote
