Sets to start with robotics?

Hello,

I want to buy a set of LEGO to connect my raspberry pi with the LEGO build hat and get started in robotics.

I found this tutorial (https://projects.raspberrypi.org/en/projects/lego-robot-car/0) where they recommend some sets to build a robot car. The problem is that one of the sets that they use is the Education SPIKE Prime Set which is too expensive since it contains some hardware that can be replaced by my raspberry.

My idea is to buy two motors (https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/technic-large-motor-88013) and then I would only need the wheels and some blocks to build the structure. What set would you recommend me? Ideally it would contain wheels and some blocks to build the robot and then allow me to jump into more advanced projects. I was thinking about something similar to the LEGO Mindstorms blocks but without all the expensive hardware and electronics, since my rapberry can emulate the behaviour.

I wouldn't buy the LEGO hat or official motors. If you are going third party for the controller board, you might as well use generic motors too.

For the parts, I'd use bricklink and buy technic bricks (with holes) some larger wheels and a range of gears. Technic bricks are often more useful than technic beams as they are studded and so act more like regular bricks for building the structure. Or look in the SPIKE sets inventories and buy the parts you might use.

I have only used a Raspberry pi for controlling LED pixels, RGB.  No experience with motion control.

I suggest you get some control+/powered up motors and then pick up some technic sets that aren’t motorized. That way you can choose wich motors you want and what types of pieces you get.
