letsbuild Posted March 13, 2022 Posted March 13, 2022 Hey guys, Long time no see I've started working on another supercar that fits the TC18 ruleset. I love the size constraints that are used here and keep going back to them as a starting point for my brainstorms. As of now, I have only started work digitally on this model. There's a couple reasons for this, and they also happen to be why I haven't built in almost two years First off, let me detail the features. - AWD system - Independent suspension on all corners - Flat-six engine - Steering on front axle (wish I could do all, but will not fit size constraints.) - Complete bodywork - 15W x 16H x 41L (actual dimensions should be 15W x 11H x 35L) You can find the Mecabricks file here: https://mecabricks.com/en/models/zOjoWDgoj6Z The rear suspension is based off the suspension from my F1: The shared driveshaft is what makes this suspension possible. Here, the front suspension is giving me grief. I'm stumped on how I will attach the swingarms. Right now, the configuration collides with the bevel gears. I'm thinking I might have to do two separate driveshafts. But it's a start! I'm hoping that posting here will help motivate me to finish this. I really want to see it on the shelf beside my F1. Also, I am well open to feedback. I already know I want to attach the rear suspension more securely, but I'll deal with that after the front suspension. Letsbuild Quote
technicfanatic Posted March 13, 2022 Posted March 13, 2022 Looking good. Fun to see a suspension based on rubber bands, rather than those (fairly expensive) spring suspension struts. It's pretty awesome that mecabricks can show the 3D model and import .io files! Quote
2GodBDGlory Posted March 13, 2022 Posted March 13, 2022 One suggestion for the front suspension would be to go to a MacPherson strut setup, using a spring taken from a small shock absorber on the steering pivot. This wouldn't be as realistic for this car, and could have trouble fitting under the hood, but would eliminate the need for any upper wishbone. I guess you could even just use a vertical axle for the strut to locate the axle, and then use a rubber band somewhere else for the actual springing. Quote

Oh yeah, there's definitely some interesting features to be had there. I hear what you're saying, but I'm having a hard time visualizing how it would fit in this scale. I plan on using these fenders, so there might be room for a strut in the fender. The big issue is that only a half-stud connection is welcome inside the wheel. I'll try some prototyping though and see what I can find. Quote

I'm building something slightly smaller right now, but solving issues of models at this scale is really enjoyable. Also I'd love to see proper sets from Lego like this and not such abominations like corvette or recent mustang. Quote

Well, I hope this project satisfies you! Update: I found another, stronger, system for the front suspension. This takes advantage of tolerances in parts to allow for enough suspension travel. Realistically, I only need 0.3-0.5 studs of travel. I tried it out in real life, and this works: Hard to see from this angle, so here's the backside. You can see the driveshaft right between the two swingarms. My only problem now is to transfer the power from the front driveshaft without having interference like there is in the gears. Again, more to be had for another update. I don't have much time to work on these, so it will probably be very slow progress until college is over. Quote
