Honestly, I’m not sure how I feel aout more Classic Space sets. I really don’t like Blacktron Cruiser and Forestman’s Hideot GWPs becasue they are too….faithfl, yet with a few modern parts. Sme way for El Dorado. I am not really into nogalic stuffs. I always love that Lion Knight’s Castle is a new original castle and Galaxy Explorer has a massive facelift.

I love Space City sets and I don’t know if they are considered as “Neo Classic Space”. But I still love that subtheme.

No nostalgia for me.

I'm going to guess and say that the limited amount of CS "style" sets released this year (just two GWPs - micro launchpad and space diner) are really to support the overall Space theme this year, but does not mean there are any general release CS-type sets coming or planned by Lego.

I do think that it is interesting that the ads (with the exception of the timeline one) do not feature any of the currently-available sets, though - If they are advertising the current Space megatheme, then why do those sets not appear in the ads?

When were those ads posted, and who is the intended audience on Instagram?

Agreed, I don’t think they will do classic Space sets later this year since we have a cross-cutting thee. Two Classic Spce GWPs are good enough for Year of Space plus we had Galaxy Explorer.

Space City subtheme is. “Neo Classic Space”, so I guess we cal it for a year.

They were posted this year, so after the sets dropped; Instagram users are of all ages (and LEGO posts things on their page that are for a variety of ages), so the intended audience is anyone/everyone.

Very cool! But not very realistic to happen...
I remember the old one already being large as a kid, and I had (have) the expansion set with it too. And my parents just wouldn't let me take down some walls in the house :head_back:

Yeah the Blacktron Cruiser and Forestman's Hideout were rather disappointing to me too.
I liked the Cruiser's cockpit and new canopy, but I think I'll take the middle and rear sections of the original over those of the remake.

I wouldn't be surprised if they release it eventually, but it will probably be a display piece that you can put on a shelf rather than a playset like the original.

We got something like that in this set.

As for a new minifig scale monorail, I know some MOCers have simply built the tracks out of regular parts, so it's possible without new specialized pieces.

Supposedly we're getting some kind of baby scale monorail as a GWP.

The article in that link says it has been confirmed they will be Insider Rewards sets, not GWP.

Oops, good catch.

I think if they went with another nostalgic space set, there's a few directions I could see them going.  If we got another large space ship, I think either something Blacktron based or a reimagined version of the Deep Freeze Defender would be the biggest ones there.  I could also see them going with some sort of land base, from either any of those factions or just straight up Classic Space.  I feel like M-Tron also could get a set at some point, but it would probably be a GWP, since I think the only flagship set in there was the big tank thingy, and that seems unlikely over a ship or base.

Reimaged sets are great for me, like Galaxy Explorer! But not El Dorado, just too faithful.

Anyways, I wold be happy with entirely new and different  theme  in future.

A Blacktron Renegade or Deep Freeze Defender scaled-up to match the Galaxy Explorer would be day 1 for me!!

I would personally also like to see a remade Galactic Mediator (SP2); the original is mid compared to other ships of the time, but it has some cool design elements (double cockpit) and a colour-scheme that would look better if executed with modern parts and building techniques.
A scaled-up GM with smoother and less blocky wings, a more detailed central body, and better colour integration (maybe with green added as an accent colour) would be an excellent follow-up to the GE, and would also really showcase how LEGO’s designs and techniques have improved over the past few decades. Also, it could give us an unmutated Blacktron II astronaut, as well as SP2 officers updated to match the others that we have gotten.

Bases are somewhat tricky, since after the Classic Space era, they depended heavily on those large faceted window pieces. I could see a CS base working as a GWP, but I am not sure that we will get one as a retail set.

M:Tron has a decent number of mid-size ships, so I can see one of them getting scaled-up to a $60-$70 set. The Mega Core Magnetizer is iconic, but the main impediment is the (clever!) use of the faceted quarter window piece as the front canopy - I am not sure how that could be replicated at the original size (or larger) using modern parts. 🫤

I've been wanting to make a modernized Galactic Mediator for ages, I've just never found the time to do it :/

This is true, I didn't think of that.  I was partially thinking of the raised baseplate issue that some of them cause, but the Eldorado Fortress proved that they can definitely work around that (and arguably do it better, since the base being constructed of actual bricks allows for play areas inside of the ground, whereas the baseplate was hollow).

I guess that's not the final version of the baby scale monorail?  I see this monorail has a lot of old discontinued pieces.

Gonna be hard to bring back the Monorail without a completely new Monorail system... therefore probably making it less interesting as a business, unless they can use a new rail system that's already being used in modern sets.
I think it would be a bit pointless to make a Monorail train not be a playset... and don't forget, the Galaxy Explorer was in fact both a playset and a display piece, extending further on what the original had to offer.

They didn't include the base for the Galaxy Explorer.  They could have had a base and sell it for maybe $175-$200, but they didn't do that.

I would like to see it as a playset, but I don't have too much hope.  The original was $155, which is $426 today.  It will be an 18+ set as is the case for most nostalgic sets.  How many adult sets do they have as play sets now?  For the Orient Express or the 18+ Harry Potter train you don't have it going around in a circle as you do with the Lego City trains. They also would need to get new monorail tracks.  The original 1987 Monorail needed tracks made by another company and that's part of why it was so expensive.  I don't think the roller coaster tracks would blend as well and I think they should get new tracks altogether.

I definitely think that LEGO will continue to revisit classic themes/classic sets in either reimagined ways (like the Eldorado Fortress or Blacktron Cruiser) or in a more original way (like the Lion Knight's Castle or Galaxy Explorer), but I think it remains to be seen if they'll expand on them or keep sort of doing what they're doing now (1-2 sets per year and then 1-2 retro GWP per year).  Clearly they're going for an adult market with them, as they're all higher priced and many of them don't contain as many play features as a modern City or Ninjago set would, and they all seem to be doing well (the only one that I recall being on discount was the Galaxy Explorer at Walmart, but that seemed like an exception, since no other retailer really had it on sale), but I don't think it's likely that we get a full expansion into retro themes being totally revived.  The only way that would happen, in my opinion, is something like the 2009 Space Police III or something like Power Miners/Pharaoh's Quest being a spiritual successor to Rock Raiders/Adventurers - not a true reboot, but takes a similar concept and modernizes it.

Idk, we had a tonne of those sets in 2022 and 2023 and I think this year it was nothing. I don't feel they're going to do regularly released straight remakes again

Kids make a good point about needing more aliens.

https://www.space.com/lego-space-theme-kids-survey-designer-interview

We have progressed considerably since the late 2000’s, when kids were switching the alien SP3 heads to the villains during playtesting!

Also, this quote bodes well for the future of Space:
Based on the company's research, Lego found that 77% of kids want to travel to space and 86% are interested in finding new planets, stars and galaxies. Additionally, more than 3 in 5 children believe there are aliens in space, and 64% want to meet one.”

Right! I’m quite pleased to hear that kids enjoyed non-licensed Space sets and they want more aliens. It makes me wonder about the future when I saw that quote too!

it’s cute that kids beleive that there are aliens and want to meet one!

I wonder if Lego would do licensed space-themed themes instead of in-house ones in the future.

Interesting interview. Also interesting part, since we had quite some discussion about whether it would play in our solar system or far away:

Quote

"This time around, when we did Lego Space City, we  pushed the minifigure further from here as it's ever been, and the same with the minidolls in Lego Friends," Meehan said. "We were trying to look at, What if the Lego City team were exploring an unknown planet? We didn't name the planet or say which solar system. They are somewhere imaginary, they're somewhere new. What would they do?"

"Because this is what kids were telling us," he said. "This idea of discovering life and alien life and different galaxies."

This could explain why they come up with Space City sets’ box art.

I would guess non-licensed, since the article emphasised that most kids saw space as a place of endless imaginative possibilities.

Though the magazine comic does contradict this somewhat by calling the planet “Planet X”.

Well that comic is in a magazine made by another company and surely they can´t depict everything they want there, but whoever works with them on Lego´s side I would say it is not the designers of the sets ;)

That aside, Planet X isn´t really a name. X is the letter used for the unknown: The X Files, Mr.X etc. So yeah, I wouldn actually say that is no contradiction but it actually is more a confirmation of what the designer said ;).

True, though given the history of LEGO themes’ lore, I consider both tie-in comics and designer intent to be equal in terms of canonicity.

Technically, sure, but the name “Planet X” is usually used to refer to a hypothetical tenth (now ninth) planet in our Solar System.

Maybe Planet X used to be in our solar system, until a wormhole to a distant galaxy opened. . .

Yeah, but that is just another case where the X stands for the unknown.

You see it is working. You are using your imagination ;)

I am pretty sure there will be another Planet X in our solar system after the 9th planet’s new name.  Currently, it’s still unknown.

Anways, i agree with C_S, it could be possible to have another non-licensed space theme in fire.
