I think this discussion just proves the non-licensed series are the best, as there is usually something for everyone. People often complain there are too many City figures but it makes sense given the wide variety of occupations, hobbies, nationalities and costume options there are in the modern world. Lego can’t include everything in every series (although it was better when there were 16 figures per series), but they do a good job in  making sure different genres are covered.

I personally like the variety, although I have a preference for City figures that reflect leisure/travel or exploration subthemes. Anything with a real-world animal is a big plus. I’d like to see more Ancient Egyptian stuff too.

The last time we saw anything Egyptian in a CMF was the mummy woman from series 19 (I’m rather fond of her because they gave her a death mask alternate face so you aren’t stuck with just a goofy zombie-esque face), so really we’re overdue. Given the inclusion of Cupid in the upcoming series and Orion in the last one, I hope in the future we could see some Egyptian gods making an appearance. I’m sure minifigs of gods like Bastet or Sobek would be popular with kids and adult collectors.

I just looked through all the series and there isn't one accessory in the non-licensed ones that I would classify as a fantasy creature.  Toys maybe but not fantasy.

I would have also said the mushroom but that's a couple of parts rather than a specific piece.

Off the top of my head, we have had numerous fantasy CMF characters that come with figures - black bat, black cat, wolf, dark red scorpion, orange starfish, green frog, red spider and probably others. Whether these are fantasy creatures or not when they come with a fantasy character is debatable. Often animals in fantasy look not so different to those in real life, normally because the fantasy element is in some magical power rather than in looks, so when depicted in LEGO would look no different to a real life animal. LEGO also tends to be fairly traditional when it comes to fantasy in that they put a black cat with a witch rather than putting, for example, a two-headed dog or a bat-cat hybrid, simply because the stereotypical witch has a black cat. However, it may look like a normal cat but it could be a magical cat with special mystical powers or even an alternate form of the witch after she has turned herself into cat form. Similarly the bat could be the alternative form of the vampire, and therefore fantasy rather than real. Is the frog meant to be a prince ready to be kissed, and hence fantasy, or just a real frog that has been randomly paired with a figure that looks like a traditional fairy tale princess? I imagine the frog is there because of the traditional Frog Prince fantasy story.

How many well-known fantasy creatures are there that are both a) small enough to be included as a minifigure accessory and b) worth depicting that way rather than as (out of scale) minifigures in their own right? All I'm coming up with, first thing in the morning, are baby creatures--baby dragon (which we have a few versions of in LEGO by now), baby unicorn, baby pegasus, baby griffin, etc. And while any of those would be delightful as a CMF accessory, licensed or otherwise, there would also need to be an archetype-related reason to use them because of how CMFs work. What fantasy character is there for whom the obvious accessory would be, for instance, a baby unicorn?

Fairy? Phoenix? Thunderbird? Bird that has has blue-trans tail as “ice”? Small Cerebeus? Two-head dog? Hellhound?  Horned serpent? Wampum? Gremlin? Dark elf?

Goat-fish? Merlion? Cow-fish (i don’t know hat it’s’ c allied in Greek mythology)? Horse-fish?

Baby yeti?

Fairies work better as minifigures themselves (which is why we got one as a CMF). Ditto the dark elf, and possibly the gremlin (though it might be cute to include one with a pilot minifigure). The phoenix...well, we did get one with a CMF, didn't we? Just a licensed one. Most of the others are either semi-obscure/not instantly recognizable, or don't have a "natural" minifig archetype to accompany, or would look odd if made small enough.

All I'm saying is, I see why we haven't gotten much of a mythical menagerie in the CMFs.

You know what could work? A jackalope. We could get some kind of Old West storyteller with a jackalope.

That would be hilarious actually. Give him a nice wide brimmed hat and a beard and bring back Kermit’s banjo for him to play as well. 100% would buy.

Nothing wrong with phonies in non-licensees series - it might be more generic or at. Least make a dark phoenix.

Fairy, gremlin and elf could work as baby-figure instead of minifigures. But i see your point.

*crumbling my idea and throw in into trash bin……*

Dark Phoenix is an X-Men character. The concept does not exist in traditional mythology and folklore.

More to the point...dark or normal, for a phoenix to appear as a CMF accessory, there needs to be a CMF that it goes with. Do you have one in mind?

I’m aware of X-Men character. I was fascinated by Galarian Moltres from Pokemon Sword & Shield. I love its color scheme so i would love to see lego to do a dark verison of phoenix, rather than traditiaonl one.

This is exactly why Lego doesn’t add all these mythological characters to the CMF line. They aren’t instantly recognizable. Medusa has an instantly recognizable feature, her snake hair. Others are half animal, making it clear what it is. A lot of mythological characters don’t have that obvious feature. Or aren’t in popular media that a child would recognize. I’m a fully grown adult and have no idea what a wampum or a dark elf or dark phoenix is, neither would a child.

At the end of the day, Lego is a toy brand. They aren’t going to be adding in characters that would have kids scratching their heads wondering what it is.

Like half of the D&D CMFs?

Yeah that’s fair. I wonder if maybe there was something recently released that got D&D popular with kids? I was surprised to see a D&D series release over something like Fortnite, guaranteed to fly off the shelves for kids. Especially with figures that are specific named characters instead of just fantasy warrior looking things.

I know absolutely nothing about D&D and don’t get it, so maybe it’s more popular than I realize.

One of the benefits of this series is, that it doesn´t matter more than with other licensed series if you like D&D or even know what it is. They are fantasy characters and the unlicensed series also showed that they are selling well.

Given the recent surge of CMF with disabilities, do you think there are chances of the steampunk character having a steampunk styled prosthetic?

Maybe they’ll bring back the mechanical leg from monster fighters

Yes, it might be likely for lego to come up for steampunk character with  this protective

Series 25 included two visibly disabled characters – the athletic champion with double leg prosthetics and the dog groomer with a cochlear implant – and I don’t see why Lego wouldn’t want to keep that number if possible. From the leak we have all that we can see is the astronomy kid with what looks like a prosthetic arm. And we can see just enough of the other characters to rule out everyone outside of the four in the back row having normal limbs (and everyone has normal hair pieces). And of the four in the back row the steampunk inventor and the quartermaster are the two most likely candidates for a prosthetic leg, with the inventor being the more unique and interesting option.

You forgot to mention that train costume girl wearing an eyepatch (temporary or permanent) in Series 25.

But you make a good point.

To be honest, I completely forgot Train Costume kid was in that series. Good catch, and a quarter of the last ‘normal’ series having a visible disability aid just makes it all the more likely that Lego will want mor than one character like that this series.

No problem!  Agreed, it would be a great pleasure to have more minifigures with visible disabilies. I would be intereted to see amuletd arm or leg for minifigure (without protestic arm or leg).

It’s entirely possible we’re going to see that when we get higher quality images of the Astronomy Kid. They appear to be wearing either the current prosthetic forearm made for Autumn in the Friends theme or something very similar to it. Given that Autumn has been sporting an arm stump since the Friend’s soft reboot a little while ago I find it hard to believe that the CMF team would be lazy and not make the Minifigure equivalent to her arm and prosthetic two separate pieces. There’s also a character that will feature heavily in the upcoming Jurassic World Chaos Theory seasons (the first season got a wave of sets) who is missing part of their left arm with no prosthetic in sight based off the trailers. Coincidentally, the left arm is also the one that Astronomy Kid seems to be wearing a prosthetic on, so make of that what you will.

Agreed, I don’t believe that the CMF team full of slackers. They contnue to amaze me and others (no maturer fi it’s just non-licensed - I always enjoy collecting every single minifigure from regular CMF  series). I don’t think Aankin Skywalker / Dath Vader minifigure never had protestic hand in Star Wars theme. His hand had been severed Epiosde II, I believe. Aankin / Darth Adler only wore gloves afterwards.

I’m very interested to see character in Jurasic World Chaos Theory coming in Lego form!
