Bricky Brickster Posted September 13, 2024 Posted September 13, 2024 Hi everyone, I am new to eurobricks and I was thinking about recreating a whole Lego store set in the 80s or 90s. Problem is, I need banners, lights, and sealed lego. Any tips, images or links? Thanks! Quote
SpacePolice89 Posted September 16, 2024 Posted September 16, 2024 Jump to 45:05 If you manage to set up such a store you should also have 1980s prices on the sets and then you also need 1980s customers. I'm born in the 80s so I can come and do some shopping when everything is ready Quote
Artanis I Posted September 16, 2024 Posted September 16, 2024 Oh man, that footage... I want all of those sets... (and none of the fashion)... and wow, MISB monorails & pirate ships? A time machine please! I have ACTUAL dreams about walking into a modern day shop and seeing these old gold sets on the shelves. 34 minutes ago, SpacePolice89 said: If you manage to set up such a store you should also have 1980s prices on the sets and then you also need 1980s customers. I remember all those sets on shelves from when I was a kid. I wanted the Futuron monorail so badly but when my parents were going to buy the monorail it wasn't available anymore. I was so sad. I only had some pictures of it to look at and dream and thinking that I'll never get it. I later discovered Bricklink and bought it. I was so happy then and I still am when I see my 6990. I still have the small brochures I used to look at as a kid. And now I have it! Quote
JesseNight Posted September 16, 2024 Posted September 16, 2024 (edited) Remember the big boxes with the flaps, underneath which we would peek at some of the special parts? Ah, the memories... (1980 kid myself) @SpacePolice89 Congrats on getting it! Enjoy not running out of light gray 1x4 plates anytime soon Edited September 16, 2024 by JesseNight Quote

Yes, those boxes were really fun as well as a great marketing tool. I remember always looking at the box of 6481 Construction Crew at the local toy store every time we went to the shopping street. Then I got it as a birthday gift. I still have the set in working order and good condition and the instructions but unfortunately not the box but I found a picture of it. Quote

I remember when those light & sound kits just started (1986 if I'm not mistaking), that really was something! I really only wanted one thing at that time... one of the bigger space ships. When my trains-loving dad went out looking for a space set for his son, that's when the monorail ended up under the Christmas tree. Ironically it had never even caught my attention at the time, but it never disappointed! Reminds me I once did a recolor and some edits in Stud.io, I really love those taller SP1 & M-Tron canopies and they look awesome on the train. Sorry, I'm straying a bit offtopic. I love the idea of a 80s-90s LEGO store, I'd love to see pictures if you ever manage to do it. If you want it filled with original sealed boxes that still look like new, I fear that's gonna cost a fortune. If you're okay with replica boxes, it might be a lot more doable. Not sure where to find the right banners and lights. I think the biggest challenge remains finding it all in mint condition. Quote

Another alternative is to buy used empty boxes in good condition from Bricklink. Quote
evank Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 I have so many happy childhood memories of Toys R Us, and also of a smaller toy store chain called KayBee, here in New Jersey in the 1980s. My favorite Lego back then -- and still today -- were the "Expert Builder" (pre-technic) sets. As mentioned, those boxes let you see inside and were so tempting! I loved car stuff. For birthdays/Chanukah, over a couple of years in the early/mid-80s, I got the 8860 auto chassis, 8847 dragster, and 8858 engines. These all made me very happy, until I became a teenager and was "too old" for Lego. Got back into it in my 40s! Quote
