Does anyone else feel like the different dragons could have quite different price points? If there aren’t any substantial sidebuilds I could see Toothless and Meatlug being quite small £20 - £25 sets like these Ninjago dragons:

meanwhile I think Hookfang or Barf and Belch could be smaller £40 / £50 sets

I’m also interested to see if there are builds for the village of Berk and the dragon-fighting arena (if it’s an important location in the new film)

I was thinking that size-wise, Meatlug would be 10–15€, Toothless 20–25€, Stormfly 30–35€, Barf and Belch and Hoofang 40–50€.

But none of the dragons need to be any bigger. I was actually quite surprised rewatching the first movie three days ago, seeing how small Hookfang is compared to what I remembered.

Of course, LEGO will probably oversize them anyway, but I am really interested in seeing how they approach those sets. (Hoping for some Berk sidebuilds.)

Uh-oh, some worrying news—apparently How to Train Your Dragon is not getting its own theme, but is releasing as a part of Icons.

Which means we're probably just getting a single set. The leaker says that he's gonna find out as soon as possible.

———

Well, that's a missed opportunity... This franchise would have so much potential as a theme. But right now, it seems like we're probably (just my guess) getting a 200€ set that's either a huge buildable Toothless, or the Berk village with minifigures and two or three dragons.

That's a pity that it'll be a one-off. I thought with the popularity of the movies and the live-action remake, that they'd go the route of having a whole theme but I guess not. Maybe they want to wait to see if the single set sells well enough to justify making more.

Let’s not get all doom and gloom yet. It’s worth remembering that Sonic started out as a Dimensions pack, only got a set through Ideas, and then after that did well got its own theme. So a large HTTYD set in the Icons theme could be Lego’s way of testing how well the property sells and hedging their bets if the live action movie bombs. And it’s also worth noting that LotR and Transformers have both had multiple sets come out under the Icons banner, so being an Icons set doesn’t automatically mean a one-off.

The set is confirmed now to be a buildable Toothless without minifigures.

Huge disappointment. Of course getting Toothless is still awesome, but I was hoping for minifigures and so much more.

The relationship between Hiccup and Toothless is the obvious backbone of the entire franchise so not including minifigures is so boneheaded it's almost impressive. My biggest desire for whatever this license would bring were figures of Hiccup and Astrid so the fact we're getting neither really makes me lose almost all excitement I have, even if I'm not inherently against a Toothless statue. They could've also just done both playsets and a big statue D2C but LEGO has completely lost the plot in recent years so I guess it's on me for expecting this franchise to be treated any different.

I genuinely have no idea why LEGO would make a big, display set for collectors without any minifigures for a franchise that is known for its popularity with kids and diverse characters.

They could've at least included Hiccup with a data plate stand, since he's just as important to the movies (and even more) than Toothless.

When we heard the set was Icons I really hoped it would be a display piece à la the Tallneck, mainly targeted at fans who grew up with the franchise and now have money to spend but still accessible for kids. Something like a $50-60 Romantic Flight set with Toothless being posed on a cloud with Hiccup and Astrid on his back or maybe Itchy Armpit with Hiccup, Toothless, Astrid and Stormfly for $120-150 or something along those lines. It feels like LEGO just genuinely does not understand who they are catering to here, which is a feeling that returns way too often nowadays.

That‘s a bit of an exaggeration  Yes, the number of yearly buildable figures and objects has increased quite a bit, but unless I’m overseeing something, this is the only new license so far to get nothing but a buildable figure. Zelda, Animal Crossing, Fortnite, Dune and so on all had at least one regular set and a lot of amazing minifigs.

Maybe they‘re just testing the waters with this?

I think the set is completely based on the assumption that adult fans who would buy this set (since it's for adults, as a part of Icons) care about Toothless much more than they do about anything else from this franchise.

Which is completely insane, because there's so much more beyond Toothless. Sure, he's the mascot of the franchise, but Hiccup is just as important, not to mention other characters, dragons, and the scenery.

Counterpoint: Like with Stitch, convention booths are still filled with Toothless plushies and no human companion to be seen anywhere :laugh_hard:

I would‘ve preferred playsets as well, but I‘ll take a buildable figure over nothing!

No minifigs at all, and only a single set? Cowabummer.

That doubly makes me think it will be designed like the buildable Stitch - focus on the kawaii aesthetic instead of going for some thing with big, articulated wings. We already have the Horntail and a gaggle of Ninjago dragons that cover those ideas - Toothless would obviously be build a little differently, but he would mostly just be like either of those, but in black.

In either case - with no minifigs, my interest has plummeted.

Bummer about it just being a buildable figure with no minifigs.  Hopefully if it sells well some playsets may come in the future.

Given the facts that this currently appears to be a one-off set in Icons and that has is no minifigures, do we think it will be general HTTYD branded, as opposed to leaning towards live-action or animated? I could see that working, especially if there are no big differences between Toothless in the films.

Yeah, I don't think it matters.

First images of Toothless from the remake's first trailer have leaked, and he looks literally the same but in live-action. No matter how they brand it, the set will stay the same.

I think they will just slap on a How to Train Your Dragon logo, whether it's the original or the new one (if it even is different), and call it a day.

I am very surprised. I was sure they made the legless runner in the last cmf with Hiccups leg in mind. Lots of the characters would not work as minifigures without highly specialised parts, so I did not expect them, but Hiccup would be perfect with one of those artificial legs, a neat print and for example the hair of Rex from tlm2.

My kids would have gone nuts for play sets and just about everything else

No mini figs is disappointing

I’m excited to see how Toothless turns out. Since Hiccup’s not supposed to be included, do we think Toothless will have his saddle/harness? I would assume that he’ll have the red tail fin, as that’s what he’s seen with for the majority of the franchise, but would the rest of it be included, too?
