I am planning to build a small city, preferably using MILS with a number 32x32 plates in the bottom. The area I have available to build the city is however not square, instead it is a large rectangle in the middle with two 45 degree angles at either side. So my question is then, how can I fill out the available area? If the height of the 32x32 plates were 1 it would be quite easy, but how can I do it when they are just 1/2 high?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Any odd shaped parts are not really going to be MILS sections as they cannot be used elsewhere. You could cut a baseplate, or use cardboard or something else to pad the mismatch in height.

Virtually divide the area into a 32x32 MILS grid. Start by dividing the main area (central rectangle) with standard 32x32 MILS. Then, treat the beveled corners separately.

To build something the same height as MILS you can use 2 plates and a brick, so you could have a top layer of 45° diagonal plates, middle layer of 2444/10247 plate with pinhole for connecting to the MILS, and generic plates elsewhere, then bottom layer as snot bricks laying on their side (22885 are exactly 2x2 studs so probably the easiest one).  Then I guess along the visible edges you could put bricks under the top plate layer that don't quite touch the table.

Thank you all. I have come to the conclusion that cutting 32x32 plates is probably the easiest option, but I am not sure if I am able to treat lego in such a way..

Or buy an alternative brand baseplate and cut that one? Or buy a 2nd hand plate cheap somewhere and just cut it.
