mcphatty Posted May 14 Posted May 14 (edited) Hi all! I’ve done a quick rebuild of the new U-Wing set 75399, removing the black 4x10 plate that runs through the centre and rearranging lots of smaller plates to make a new internal structure that’s still strong and swooshable. The U-Wing now has space for two sitting or one sitting and one standing minifigure in the troop bay, plus one sitting pilot (with helmet if you like) in the cockpit. I also move the cockpit forward slightly and made the front edge of the windscreen piece meet the nose area for a cleaner line. This mod is also an alt-build using only the parts from the set! It’s possible to modify the U-Wing without totally disassembling the original set first, but I would recommend taking the centre structure apart completely to get to all those small plates you’ll need during the rebuild. You’ll only need to repurpose two slopes from the engines, and two white 1x3 plates and two white 1x2 plates from the wings, otherwise the engines and wings can be left intact. Free instructions are on Rebrickable. Here's more photos of the modified set along with a couple of renders showing the slight change in shape and extra troop bay capacity. sebulba56 Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Very nice mod, the coolest is that you only use parts from the original set. Makes this u-wing way more appealing ! Quote
baublitz Posted May 14 Posted May 14 Excellent improvement and accessible to anyone. I applaud these seemingly minor upgrades. Quote
TeddytheSpoon Posted May 15 Posted May 15 Oh wow. I know we have a load of talented alt-builders on this forum, but your work is just as impressive with just the parts from the one set! I've still got Obi-Wan's JSF built to your specification. Are there many leftover pieces after the mod, out of curiosity? Quote
mcphatty Posted May 15 Author Posted May 15 Thanks all! @TeddytheSpoon yes weirdly there are always leftover pieces when I do these, this time 17 of them, the biggest is the 4x10 plate! I've replaced the original renders with photos. Here's a couple showing an exploded view of the modified troop bay, the rest are on the original post. Quote
macaron35 Posted May 16 Posted May 16 now that you've modded the original build, i am pretty sure that you will improve the interior space starting from this point or maybe other details like the side doors :) it's totally your signature to improve these sets :) Quote
brimbolet Posted May 18 Posted May 18 Looks great! Thanks for the pictures and instructions. This is one set I'm really looking forward to get very soon. Still have to figure out which parts I have at home to make sliding doors though. Quote
