cookiemonster Posted May 23 Posted May 23 (edited) Hello folks and look what I found yesterday in my local toy store... The Box contains of 9 plastic bags. Interesting that Lego shifted back from paper for this one. Same as from the Fell Beast from 2024 After finishing Bags 1 & 2 After bag 6 Gandalf is the same mini figure as from Bag End set. Bag 7-9 is for the Balrog. It has interessting building techniques for the wing folding mechanism. The head is fully printed - no stickers. The wings are connected with the back of the structure so the Balrog stays in place when you close the Book Nook. Overall a very nice set which was fun to build and will display nicely between my other LotR sets. If you have questions feel free to ask them. Edited May 23 by cookiemonster Quote

What is quite neat that the bricks come together in a nice way if you close it. If I have time later on I will try to include pictures of this as well. But let me tell you that I doesn't look closed as it looks when displayed open. Quote
penguinz Posted May 23 Posted May 23 Thank you for the picture review! This is the best look at the booknook so far. I'm happy with the reuse of the fell beast's wings as that will make it easier to create more fell beasts from existing parts. If you are open to including more pictures, I'm curious what the Balrog looks like from additional angles, maybe the back and sides? Quote
brimbolet Posted May 23 Posted May 23 Thanks for the pictures. Didn't realize until now that this book nook has more than half the pieces of the new Shire set (1201 vs. 2017)... unfortunately upon closer inspection the Balrog's head is not what I was hoping for. The shape looks totally different than expected in the better pictures. Quote
Triceron Posted May 24 Posted May 24 Not quite what I was expecting. I thought it would be a diorama piece with purely brick built balrog and Gandalf, not à minifig set. I'm not sold on the Balrog. Proportions are all off to me, and it looks too much like a toy than the beast it should be representing. I guess the head just doesn't work for me at all, and is too big for the build. But I figure the scale is set to the piececount and budget, so def not an 18+ build. Hopefully some mocs will help fix this one up. Quote
MKJoshA Posted May 24 Posted May 24 Thank you for your review! I'd love to get your opinion on the head of the Balrog, or more pictures from different angles. Quote
Alamai Posted May 24 Posted May 24 This is a review of a book nook and you didnt even show it closed, yet alone in a bookshelf between books? =D Quote
Seaber Posted May 24 Posted May 24 I reckon a little mod to the legs to add length (maybe a knee joint?) would sort out the balrog proportions a little. I really like what I'm seeing though! Quote
thewatchman Posted May 24 Posted May 24 The abs on it and the grey plate behind it are terrible 😂😂 why not use an orange plate behind to give flame effects? Also the open clips on the shoulders holding straight flame pieces is kinda badly designed. I will say that I’m glad the head is printed and not stickers like I expected. Quote
Ecclesiastes Posted May 25 Posted May 25 Neat! Do you have a picture of the Book nook being closed? I'm curious how the wings are being folded. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted May 25 Posted May 25 Very nice set and nice concept the possibility to open and close the side parts! Quote
Agent Kallus Posted May 26 Posted May 26 Seeing it like this just confirms what's I'd already suspected, which is that this just doesn't work for me. The backdrop with the flames and changing shades to show their illumination is cool but it's the balrog itself that doesn't feel right. Quote

I totally agree with Agent Kallus: the color choice is an interesting choice, but the Balrog seems way off: (for reference a Citadel Minifigure I painted several years ago). but... Something is telling me that 10367 may be my next "Try to enhance and complete" starter set Edited May 26 by Grin Quote
hikouki Posted Wednesday at 02:52 AM Posted Wednesday at 02:52 AM That Balrog looks funny outside of the book nook... definitely needs a makeover... Quote
Grin Posted Wednesday at 05:37 AM Posted Wednesday at 05:37 AM (edited) ... if only they had based the color scheme of the balrog on something like Surtur from set 76289... Edited Wednesday at 08:45 AM by Grin Quote
