I'm getting Empire Strikes Back vibes which if it's only vibes is completely awesome! I swear if they open the next movie on an ice planet I will walk out of the theatre...and come back in cause it's SW and I could never walk out no matter what. Still I heard rumors that...

Billy Dee Williams is returning for the last two movies and with the Bespin hallways in Rey's force vision, I wonder if we'll be seeing Cloud City again?

What? I heard "First Order Problems" was the title :D

I sort've wish that was the name now

They already blew up the ice planet!

Actually, if they do return to an ice planet, they have to use trans neon orange chainsaws and skis. Then the Lego sets would look like... something familiar...

Holy crap. I can't even imagine how long that took. Here's hoping for ESB and RotJ ones!

I hope he makes the other two as well! Must've been painstaking for sure.

AT-ACT is all terrain armored cargo transport. The tan stormtroopers are shoretroopers.

I can't help but think of that ridiculous show Jersey Shore every time I hear about Shoretroopers

You know I'm to get a tad cheesed the more I see people complain about Episode VII. I just saw a comment over on FBTB with a user declaring he wanted to throw his drink cup at the screen during "The Forced Remake" and it was just as bad as Batman & Robin.

Really?? I agree with people that the plot was to similar to a New Hope, BUT it had spectacular actors (cough, something even a New Hope didn't have, George was never a great director of actors), wonderful humor, great effects, great plot twists, and some wonderful new stuff to explore. The reason people criticize the "similar to A New Hope's plot structure" so much is because it is the ONLY valid criticism. Again acting wise Daisy Ridley is far superior to 'Ms. Can't Decide if Her Accent is British or American' from the OT... People seem to elevate the OT to such a pedestal they forget how many flaws it had, even in its hallowed original theatrical versions.

Either some people are just trolls, or during a Phantom Menace they shoved a stick so far up their butt they had to declare all "old Star Wars GOOD" and all "new Star Wars BAD." Get over it, 1970 is calling, they want their fanboys back! :) I'll just differ to common judgement while looking at that 92% approval rating for Episode 7 on Rotten Tomatoes, and the fact my sister who genuinely hates all the previous Star Wars films got a bit of enjoyment out of Episode 7.

Thanks for listening to my rant.

Well JJ Abrams did something very smart and its the same thing he did with the Star Trek movies and that got a lot of fan hate the same way TFA is getting (Which as a self professed mega trekkie I adore those movies). He retold the original in a new way to make sure that people knew that the franchises direction is going more old school and less prequel era and to reintroduce the movie to the younger generations. I'm not sure that a lot of kids today have seen the original films and if they have at least not in the way most of us on here probably experienced it. I think our generation of SW fans, 20's and up are the last group to as a majority have watched the originals in a time where that was the only SW that existed. Sure we would have grown up on the prequels being our movie theatre SW experience but we still enjoyed the originals. I know at least in my experience the originals were the only ones my family owned for much of my childhood.

When I went to TFA opening day with my best friend we brought his little brother who had never seen the originals, just the prequels so we were explaining to him what happened in the OT. After seeing the Force Awakens he got really excited and wanted to watch a New Hope so I lent them the DVD and apparently he loved it. I think TFA did a lot to draw an interest amongst newer fans to the older movies more so then the prequels did. Let's also not forget internationally not everyone grew up on Star Wars either such as China. I wouldn't worry about the haters. As a trekkie i've felt like i've been in the trenches of nerdy arguments for the past five years because i'm on the side of the fanbase that loves the new movies. The same goes for The Force Awakens.

Here is my number one complaint about the Force Awakens that I didn't have until I looked through the art book that had so many fantastic interesting designs. The locations they went to such as planets and buildings and stuff were cool but nothing to write home about. Jakku only felt interesting because of the ship graveyard, which was a total nostalgia fest. Takdonna because of Maz Kanata's castle with all the cool crazy aliens. Starkiller Base, not because of how it looked as a planet but when you realize holy carp this is a massive space station capable of blowing up multiple planets. Where are the Felucias and Dagobahs where the planet's themselves are full of character and not just backdrops?

(apologies if this doesn't read well, I have a cold right now  )

Yeah I had forgot to consider that many kids today would know the prequels and the cartoons better than the OT. I guess we were the last generation that ONLY had the OT, even if it was very fleeting (I saw the OT on VHS before Phantom came out as a kid). That makes me feel old(er) for some reason...

Same here, I have fond memories of the VHS box that was gold with an engraved Vader on the side!

Mine was the black box version with the original theatrical cuts. I had envy of the kids with the gold boxes; although in 2004 we got the gold box DVD set with the special editions. I still have the Phantom Menace on just VHS tape though.

Its weird thinking though I'm at the point of my life considering how I will show my future kids the Star Wars films. I'm still single, so it will be a long time off before I'm married and have kids... But someday it will happen. I think "modified Machette order" will be the best method, as in 4-5-1-2-3-6-7-(8-9 by then to?). I know traditional Machette Order skips Episode One, but I think a lot of kids enjoy that silly movie so it won't be skipped in that case. The real question is how to shove the anthology movies into that mix. Will Rogue One come after all the other ones, or around the time I show them Episode 4? Or after they see Episode 3? So many questions...

I've thought about that as well, probably put the spinoffs last

I saw a video that Leia was mocking Tarkin with a accent, whether that's true or not I don't know. I mainly watch the OT on VCR since my DVD's don't work that good.

With my nephew I think I'm going to do 4,5,6,1,2,TCW,3,R,RO,7 and onward.

Always start with the oldest I think because the older ones are slower paced and its much easier to start of slow and work your way up to faster paced movies then the other way.

My goal is to kind've expose my kids to Star Wars the way I was. Start off with 4, 5, and 6 and only let them watch those until they're in elementary school. Then i'll let them watch the prequels and the sequel trilogy after that. Then in junior high or high school we can do marathon of watching them all in order. 1,2,3 Han Solo, Rogue One, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Good lord that's a lot of star wars.

Posted

I did an experiment by showing the movies to a girl in chronological order (this was before TCW). She wanted to stop after Episode III because "what's the point, he [Hayden as Anakin] has gone bad now". Well we had to continue (obviously) and after all I wanted her to see all of the movies so she'd understand Spaceballs... haha. Then she got REALLY grossed out by "that kiss" . So while the "I am your father" wasn't a surprise, the fall of Anakin and the identity of the sith lord were surprises.

Am I the only one here that get sick with the trend of hating The Force Awakens among the fans?

Yes, some of the points make by the haters are kinda valid, but most of the reasons given by the haters makes no sense. Here's some of the reasons make by the hates that makes no sense to me:

1. Bad Acting. I think this reason is totally invalid because the actors make a great job portraying the characters and their acting makes the characters feels like real people rather than the wooden acting in the prequel.

2. Kylo Ren is a terrible villain. Kylo Ren may not the most powerful Star Wars villain, but he is some of the most complex character ever featured in the franchise. Kylo Ren may looks menacing with the mask, but without the mask he feels insecure with himself, he tried everything to achieve his goal but things only get much worse. I think that this added to his depth as a character. I don't need to see another Vader or Maul.

3. The final lightsaber fight is terrible. Definetly disagree, because choreography and actions isn't what a lightsaber fight is all about. The lightsaber fight in TFA feels more like a real fight and the characters are actually trying to kill each other rather that the lightsaber "dance" fights in the prequel.

I could go on, but that's enough for this moment.

I agree with all of your points I honestly think Episode 7 has the best acting in the franchise to date. I also think Kylo Ren is a great villain because he is so insecure and trying to live up to Darth Vader's legacy.

Regarding to the order to see the movies, I would prefer to show my kin first episode 4 and go on from there leaving anthology movies and the PT as optional for them to see if they like it and are fond to get inmersed into this universe (and to avoid them from geting sick of the franchise).

My opinion about episode VII is that it will never have the nostalgia factor the original ones had (I grew up during a period of time were they were rereleased in theatres and it was quite of a big thing at the moment) but that doesn't count, the movie has some issues to me but these are just my personal thoughts:

  1. is there only one bb-8 in the whole galaxy? (seriously, a droid goes missing on the other side of the galaxy and every body seems to know about it? if it was hard to find two droids in a desert planet, it certainly would be a little harder to identify a single droid across the galaxy)
  2. was it realy a necessary character to include maz kanata? (I found it really annoying and lame, nothing but a Yoda wanabe)
  3. how in the hell could the falcon withstand so much damage? (it crashed and hit multiple objects from the very begining till the end, this makes it feel so fake)
  4. how could r2 ever know when to "wake up"?
  5. those CG creatures in Solo's ship were hideous
  6. Luke was a good pilot beforehand, but rey is good at everything at the first try, even with the lightsaber and mind control
  7. I see kylo ren as a childish character unfit for a leader of any kind

Don't get me wrong, I had a lot of fun and will be seeing future SW releases, but I would have prefered to know that the SW franchise was over after the end of the OT (only 4,5 and 6), those movies are full of flaws and plot holes, but they were ahead of their time, however now they are quite outdated and many people would not enjoy them as much as we did, yet I think disney is just trying to milk the name and prestige that the franchise has earned instead of trying something new and many of us are not willing to fall for it.

I am not trying to force my opinion on anybody but I would encourage you to be a little more tolerant towards those haters, afterall, who cares about the opinion of somebody in the internet, there will always be haters for everything, lets not be part of this ideological extremism saying that they are the monsters to be scorned.

It's not that we're trying to be haters on the haters. The opinions of those who disliked the movie are valid and if listened to (at least the rational ones like you Nom Carver) improvements could be made to make the next movie one even better. However not everyone who hates the movie are polite and unfortunately on the internet there is a strong contingent of haters that are so vocal and kinda nasty that it makes everyone who dislikes the movie look awful. These people will always exist so you're right we should not label and shove those with a dissenting opinion in with the extreme actual crazy people. That's certainly not fair to do.

That being said let me rebutt a couple of your points that are shown in movie, although not all of them are arguments as many are just difference of opinion and totally valid either way.

1) The First Order placed a large bounty on the BB8 unit, and they seem to have tons of money and exert a significant influence on a galactic scale. Apologies for the weird analogy but when the US was hunting down Bin Laden, most people in the world knew or heard about it. Bounty hunters and criminals like that would live for the opportunity to capture something of that value, and it's implied capturing BB8 would make them quite wealthy so of course they would all know.

3) Fair enough. However it is a spaceship and a freighter like the Falcon would be designed to take a lot of damage. What I hated was where it almost fell off the cliff, i'm tired of that scene being in every action film.

4) The theory is he was programmed to wake up in the presence of a Skywalker, specifically Luke's child. Again though that is a plothole until they do or do not explain it in the next movie.

5) I didn't mind them, that's just me though. My favorite aspect of SW is that in each movie there is the scene with strange monsters. If that scene had not been in there they would have broken a long SW tradition of having that scene.

6) Luke with no training except for some advice used the force to make an impossible shot on the DS. Watch the movie and you'll see Rey is never that good at anything she does, just adequate. Her whole duel with Kylo Ren she's running for her life. She in fact loses until she's reminded of the force. That moment of overwhelming Kylo is no different then Luke making the DS shot without training, it was just a moment where she realized her power with the force.

7) Personally I love that aspect of the film. Everyone except for the old guard (Akbar, Nien Nub, Leia, Solo, Chewie, etc..) all are playing hero and villain. Just like younger kids today know about the OT but not in the way we older fans do. Everyone sort've stinks in this movie and that's amazing. The First Order, the resistance, all of the young people are trying to emulate the glories of the past generation (the OT) and while better equipped are not as good.

In regards to specifically Kylo Ren, he hasn't been trained yet. He has more experience then Rey but remember the only people he's ever fought in years are non force users and people who don't wield lightsabers. Like I said he still beats Rey in the final fight, and he's not even going all out because remember he doesn't want to kill or injure her. It's just he's not as strong in the force as Rey is. We won't know why until the next films but it's probably because she's the true inheritor of her grandfather's power and not Kylo.

TFA for me was cool. The actors were good but I don't really like Adam Driver as Kylo Ren. My Mom who saw episode IV in the theaters when it came out, she said he doesn't even look like a Solo and I agree. The one thing that I thought was funny was that there were multiple people with small walkie talkies  One of my favorite parts was of course the Jakku Millennium Falcon scene.

Also I wish they added some OT aliens since PT had new aliens and old aliens. I liked the rathtar scene because I think there should always be some kind of big creature or at least nod that attacks. I also really enjoyed seeing familiar faces such as Ackbar and Nien Nunb.

Exactly! Nom stated his opinions in a well thought out and clear manner. Even though I disagree with a few I still appreciated the view and noticed a few errors I hadn't previously considered.

Still I wish the impolite group of haters would just shush it already! :) Nom's criticisms could actually improve future films, where as the impolite haters will just thrash any future Star Wars film for their own entertainment.

EDIT: Unfortunately for an example of flame wars over movies going on right now, just within the Lego community there is some very serious haters in the comments on FBTB battling out over BvS and Episode 7... Ughh, its such an ugly mess to read, it makes me wonder why the site's moderators just don't shut the comments on those articles down. :(
