Governor Mister Phes Posted October 19, 2005 Governor Posted October 19, 2005 How big is this fort exactly? And how many other mini-figures would be included? Quote
Dreamweb Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 No other minifigs, just the two opponents and a shark. I imagine it to be just a part of the fort, one wall damaged by cannonballs standing on the shore and sea just below it. The set would be about the size of Broadside's Brig or maybe a little bigger Cannon Cove. Quote

popkids Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 A great question! Here goes: A combined port and fortress for the Armada soldiers. As latecomers to the Pirate line, the only base they had was that little tower with the cool green doors. A set of this type would make sense as Spain was the country with the most cities and outposts during the Pirate era. Some ideas for the contents: a governor's palace, a prison/dungeon area, a fortified port with towers and shooting cannons, decorative touches to give it a distinctively Spanish look, plenty of Armada minifigs, lots of standards and flags. Could it be a modular design, so that you could expand your town with further sets? A pirates' tavern. Just the sort of place where Captain Jack Sparrow would go to recruit his crew! Lots of internal details, bottles and cups, a good variety of pirates and wenches. A large merchant ship, as suggested in one of the above posts. The ship in set 6277 is a nice little model, but far too small. Never mind attacking it, the big pirate ships could simply crush it into splinters and pick the cargo out of the water. A ship of comparable size to the big ships could feature a hold with all sorts of different cargoes, some civilian passengers and secret compartments. A warehouse and wharf. Not the most exciting idea for a set, you might think, but just imagine all the riches inside-a perfect target for those pirates! Some sea monsters. Not sure how you'd work these into a set, but the Viking line has shown they can be done. Just look at old maps for inspiration, they've always got fantastic creatures on them. I was going to suggest a ghost ship, but the variety of undead minifigs and 'darkside' themes available mean that there are plenty of possibilities for MOCs in this area. In more general terms, Lego should watch the forthcoming Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and then release sets that are, ahem, 'inspired' by the scenes therein ;) Having said all this, there are plenty of existing sets and lines that can be used to expand your Pirate universe, such as the Mosasaurus, the Rescue from the Merpeople, and as suggested in one of the posts above, the Amazon subtheme if you want to take your pirates inland. Best of all must be the Diving line from the late 90s. Those seabeds with all their Pirate accessories would make ideal battlegrounds for armies of skeleton pirates, and maybe the moonlight could bring even that whale's skeleton to life :o Quote
Dreamweb Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 too small to contain both a lines main figs then (see the 'adventurers' grand mistake') That's just a rule this set is supposed to break and that's exactly why I came up with its idea. Quote

LEGO could do something historically accurate here like that did with Orient Expedition and create a magnificent fortress for the Imperial Armada. I have an idea for a Spanish fortress that would make good use of the design of the base plate from 4990 Rock Raiders HQ Quote

Dreamweb Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 What about this one: It's called Mutiny and it's a bit inspired by Norro's idea from Third pirate captain thread. This would include a ship, not a very huge one, wide hull with two middle sections. Apart from that it would contain two lifeboats, two sharks and eight pirates. The idea of this set is that the crew has mutinied and they have a new captain now. The old captain and two of his comrades are sent away on one of the lifeboats, in which they sit chained, and presumably are going to face death of hunger/thirst or be eaten by sharks or whatever. The sharks are swimming in circles around the boat, tempted by their possible prey. The other five pirates remain on the ship. Of course this scenario will be suggested by the set's name and the pictures seen on the box, and if you want you can just make a regular ship out of it, with happy crew which isn't eager to mutiny. The captain being sent to death can be Redbeard, but with his captain's hat removed (perhaps we'll see his hair?). The hat will be worn by the new captain (perhaps Rummy - I always liked that early Pirate-line minifig). Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted October 21, 2005 Governor Posted October 21, 2005 Its wonderful that these ideas are appropriate for children... Quote

But may I suggest: The lifeboat be replaced with a raft such as a)the one from the pirate comic when Red Beard is cast adrift or b) the one in the early 90s idea book (when they only had the blue soldiers), on the first pirate page.... Dreamweb Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Its wonderful that these ideas are appropriate for children... Well we've seen sets with minifigs held in prison, what's wrong with the idea of being banished and chained on a boat/raft then? Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted October 22, 2005 Governor Posted October 22, 2005 I've never seen the ideas book before! Never won it on eBay and never come across it online. Good work Mr Norro! Quote

I spent years staring at this page (and the castle ones of course). I have always loved that raft. God Bless, Nathan Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted October 23, 2005 Governor Posted October 23, 2005 What do you love about that raft? Is it the sail? The fact it has room for a cannon? The pirate theme didn't get a raft in the latter years unless you count the tiny things that came in 6269 Shipwrecked and 6248 Volcano Island but they're not a stand-alone raft sets like 6257 Castaway's Raft and 6261 Raft Raiders so they don't count. Norro Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 What do you love about that raft? Is it the sail? The fact it has room for a cannon? I think it's the sail/mast suspension... but also the sheer sentimental value of thinking I would never be able to build that well. (I still admire that design anyway..though the rest of the page has lost some of its lustre). God Bless, Nathan Quote

Dreamweb Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 The raft from the idea book is great, they could have released it as a regular set, it's better than all the raft sets originally released. It's kind of an improved version (with real sail) of 6257, the set I mentioned as being one of my Big Piratical 5. About minifigs held in prison and restricted in other ways - the 1996 catalogue shows both pirates and Armada guys hanging off masts packed in nets (see here and here). Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted October 25, 2005 Governor Posted October 25, 2005 I just had an idea for a MOC called Alligator Lagoon... Don't think it would translate well into a set, however I do have sufficient pieces to build this MOC so I might give it a go as soon as I can acquire a digital camera. Quote

Governor Mister Phes Posted October 25, 2005 Governor Posted October 25, 2005 Maybe you should create a thread to honour it... Maybe others will share your love once its out in the open... Quote
Sting Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 Holy crap! If you look in THIS, you can see... could it be... a JOSHUA TREE on the top of that jagged and rocky island! Its sillouette against the moon... I remember me and phes joking about The Joshua Tree in an earlier thread... so when I saw this I was shocked. I long for the day a LEGO JOSHUA TREE appears in a lego set... than all I have to do is get me a minifig head with HUGE shades... Quote
