DOes the make a minifigure come with a hat/helmet??

Or a hand accessorie

Yes. The build-a-mini stations let you include one headgear piece (hat/hair/helmet), one head, one torso, one pair of legs, and one hand-held accessory. In the case of helmets that have visors, the helmet and visor together are treated as a single headgear piece.

Now, as far as hand accessories are concerned, most of the stores I've been to don't have too great a selection. Typically there are binoculars, rubies, push-brooms, pickaxes, cutlasses, and other common accessories in common colors. Some of these can still be useful, though, if they don't often appear in themes you collect.

You can get some good hats, headgear, heads, torsos, and legs, since many of those are ones from the collectible minifigures. And since you get to see the item before you purchase it, it can be a good investment for people who don't like the blind-packaged collectible minifigures or who want to be sure of the quality of the parts they are buying before they leave the store.

I brought my two kids to the LEGO store and we each got to make a figure. You can easily tell which one was mine since it was made of three torsos attached to two set of legs. My kids gave me strange looks but the cashier didn't even blink.

That would be lucky. I haven't seen any licensed pieces in one before.

But nevertheless, I always hit up the BAM section to see what they have. Normally I buy lots of heads and hats to add up to the 15. I once saw capes there and put those in there and the cashier said to add more because she doesn't count those as an accessory, so I was pleased!

I found a cape too and it didn't count.

But I think they sometimes throw in some old parts and I know they can order flesh heads for the BAM. So this would be considered licensed, right?

I found some dark orange slopes from TMNT too. I think they came from the building section for kids.

And the manager told me last time he is very excited because he ordered Zombie Heads for the BAM section. :excited:

Anyone ever get anything good from build-a-figure? Every time I walk by and peek, there's nothing appealing. I read someone say they put in dismantled set figure parts and another person said they had older CMF figures. It really looks like a used parts bin rather than something that's regularly updated with desirable parts.

It seems like the BAM station is more of a way for excess parts to be sold.  Often, it will not be so random.  It could be a limited selection of torsos and pants, sometimes even only a few varieties of these.  They probably will not match very well either.  If you have mostly construction worker torsos, sad clown hats, and green pants, there is not much you can do.  The best aspect of the BAM bin seems to be the accessories as they usually have some good ones in there.  The heads almost always have a good selection too.  It is mainly the torsos and pants that are the limiting factor at my store.

It's 3 for $9.99. I've read people say you must buy 3, not 1, and I've seen someone say instead of hat/hair, head, torso, legs, accessory, he got duplicates of "NY <3 I" torso only. I also read people say you cannot put minifigure parts in PAB cup.

Even online PAB doesn't have anywhere sufficient parts to put together a nice minifigure.

I will usually cobble together a few minifigures at my local Lego store as means to get some spare parts, or if there's a particularly interesting head or accessory or torso. The legs are usually pretty generic, and the hats/hair bin are pretty basic, as well. But that doesn't mean you can't throw together a nice minifigure. It might not be something special, like something out of the CMF line, for instance, but they can certainly be nice.

When I use the Build a Minifigure purchase, I typically just look for parts I'm interested in.  I don't care if it makes a coherent minifigure, as long as all of the parts are useful.

I also do this; a minifigure from the BAM is five pieces (legs, torso, head, hair, accessory), so any fifteen pieces count.

Granted, $10 is pretty steep for only 15 pieces, but I've got some pretty useful/rare pieces this way. I probably could get them cheaper on BrickLink, but it's faster and more convenient to just grab them myself and have them in hand.

I found Series 2 Spartan torsos in mine. Naturally all my minifigures that day were Spartans.

So yeah, I've always had pretty good fun with them. Musketeer hats, Spartan Torsos, Weird hats of all kind, seagulls, monkeys, etc. I have a lot of seagulls now.

Thanks @cebelicamya for doing that!

@Actor Builder I think the stock varies somewhat, but generally what you find at one store will be at another.

I will be checking my local store next week (going after CMF 17) and I'll try to get pictures of the minifig bar if it's substantially different.

Pieces are released quarterly to the stores, at least how they have done it in the past.  There was no say in what you got, you just got Quarter 2, 2017 parts sometime during quarter 2.  If the accessories are garbage, I usually just go in and grab 15 torsos, and then maybe 15 legs.

Even so, I'm going to have to go check mine for snakes.

I think the piece selection varies a little bit from store to store, but usually what you find at one store you can find it at another. Therefore I always check what people post around the world. For example, when thebrickfan posts about new elements in minifigure bar, I check them in my store and mostly they are the same ones. It also depends what people grab and buy, for example in one store there can be new parts available for couple of months, where in other one the new parts are gone in just 2 weeks.

Example how the new pieces are added on each quarter:

I'll be flying to London this weekend for work and I'm definitely visiting the Lego store. I am super interested in picking some minifigs so I was wondering, what are the rules for making them? how many parts can you choose? Just head, torso, legs and one accessory per minifig?

I've not had any trouble with multiple accessories, as long as they're all attached to the figure somehow.

Edit: thanks for clearing things up with me about store variation, everyone. I love you all like a cat loves a vole, but less violently.
