*oh2*

Indeed: *oh2* !

I was wondering, how permanent is the "permanent mutation"? Like, as in the rest of the battle or the quest or ...? :look: All I wanted was that Lizard Tail :cry_sad: .

Posted

I'm certain the party will have an opportunity to remedy those mutations at some point.

Right? :look:

We'll just have to see about that.

Oh, alright, I'll change his spear to some sort of staff. And add a potion, of course.

Go broomstick. It's ranged so if needed you can attack from the back row with full WP.

It really is frustrating. The worst way to make a battle is to make a battle where players don't have options. One or two, maybe, all of them, no. And Poison should almost never be an immunity, unless it fits thematically.

Can I just reiterate how overused "immune to negative effects" is these days? :sceptic:

Second that, there is too much of it going around in the quests I have checked out in the past several months...

Posted

I kind of agree. I try and limit to mini/bosses or in special cases like the Shades. Otherwise enemies often have a handful of immunities suited to them, but not to the heroes.

Posted

I'll fourth the sentiment. I'll often add a few immunities to my own opponents, but Immune to Negative Effects is really frustrating as a witch who specializes in dishing out negative effects. What's the point if I can't do anything? :sceptic:

Adding some immunities is perfectly fine for a tough enemy (tough - roleplaying-wise: final boss in the quest, or an important character for the story, for example), and even then not overdo it. To me, it makes sense for a blind enemy (troglodyte) to have "Immune to Blind" but not have it be "immune to negative effects" even if it is a king of troglodytes, because enemies are already getting pumped in health ridiculously, so adding immunities just limits the players that much more, which I feel, is bad.

Wait, for immune to effects, can you just choose them right off the bat? Of course I would only choose those that fit my character, but when can you choose them?

Posted

Agreed. I would be OK with a shortened duration like "Negative effects only last 3 rounds" or something like that, but not total immunity.

Posted

No, you have to acquire an artifact that has the immunity already, or acquire a scroll of that particular effect and imbue it into an artifact in order to get the immunity (see: Marketplace thread)

No. We are talking about enemies that are immune to negative effects caused by PCs. A PC's immunities come from their equipment that grants them.

We're talking about immunities on enemies, which are chosen by the QM as part of creating the battle. For Heroes (player characters), you have to find/earn/buy either a gem (for immunity to an element) or a Scroll (for immunity to an effect) and then have it imbued into an Artifact at the Marketplace for 50 gold apiece (so for example, someone with a Scroll of Confusion could imbue it into one of their Artifacts for 50 Gold, and from then on they'd be Immune to Confused as long as they wore that Artifact).

Posted

Yeah, I generally try to limit the immunities my enemies have. I don't think I've every used an enemy that was Immune to Negative Effects, actually. Going with the high-Power, low-Defense style of enemy generally makes the battle more enjoyable for everyone, and I try not to do anything that would nullify the creative advantages of a player's carefully set up stats and equipment.

Endgame, was Minoid supposed to be speaking in Courier font this entire time? Because your font tags are really messed up if that's the case.

Posted

He was not! Only machine in the quest that doesn't, for whatever reason, despite the fact The Giant has more organic speech...

You are correct about my fonts, however. How did quoting something cause the font to change?

Posted

You have stacked font tags, which I cleaned because that's one of my things I'm OCD about. Here's what your last post of that battle looks like in plaintext:

Can I just reiterate how overused "immune to negative effects" is these days? :sceptic:

Point taken. It's just that negative effects are damn effective, and if there's only one enemy in the battle (as boss battles usually go), it's easy for the party just keep the boss from hurting them with effects while chipping away it's health.

And if the boss is given immunity to all those crippling effects, there's not many left (poisoned, bleeding and cursed), so it's simpler to just make it immune to them all. That way the party will have to rely on their own strength and positive effects, which is the whole point of having a "big bad boss" in the first place - the heroes need to give all they've got, at the risk of losing everything.

Posted

Wouldn't relying on the party's strength include the items and weapons they have obtained? Using "immune to all negative effects" rarely increases the challenge, it just makes them a lot less approachable. It simplifies what may have otherwise been a good fight with a few tweaks to severals rolls of the die for a week or two. It removes a significant amount of strategy, and can just make battles long slogs.

Also, now that poison stacks, it can actual deal a fair bit of damage, while not being crippling. Had we been allowed to use poison on Aureole, it would've made the fight so much less stressful.
