Boris sits by one of the windows watching the snow fall outside, "Wisdom and royalty are not exclusive, good sir."

"No they aren't. But neither are they synonymous."

"And sometimes, rulers ain't got neither.

"Heh."

Back from questin' so soon, Lind?"

"Yes - we were off helping an old friend find his brother a present.

Rather interesting story, really - we ran into a bit of a problem. For the original gift, we needed a rare kind of leaf - but when we got to the only source, there was a chap that needed the leaf for his dying sister.

Funny how that always seems to happen...

But, anyways, it was all getting rather heated, until I managed to solve the problem to everyone's satisfaction..." Lind looked off into the distance for a moment.

"Terry, you're an unaware genius. Thank you. You just made me hit upon...well, at least a pretty decent speech for tonight."

The Hall doors slammed open to let a cold draft in as a slender figure strode in. The noise disrupted an otherwise silent tavern. Anyone still asleep would have surely been woken up by the second sound of the doors slamming shut. Jinnipher made her way to the bar where she immediately began to enjoy a hot brandy cider. It wasn't her regular drink of choice, but the cold and dreary weather warranted something to warm the stomach and spirit.

"Welcome back. How was your...date, with Gabriel?"

"Good."

Jinnipher sipped her drink. "Speech for what?" She paused, then laughed loudly. "Don't tell me you're running for king? If you really think--" she stopped suddenly. "Well, good luck kiddo." She smirked.

The Black Knight nodded his head softly and shrugged. "Everyone's trying to put us under another dynasty, when we finally have a chance to be free...

Oh, just come and listen to the debates. You won't regret it..."

He looked at Terry. "You should come also. I think the topic'd speak to you..."

"Good."

"So the guy who hires you for stuff also wines and dines you? Scandalous."

He looked at Terry. "You should come also. I think the topic'd speak to you..."

"Nah. Politics is just donkeys and elephants t'me."

"Naturally."

"But I didn't even say or do nothing."

"It's actually a fine starting point; inaction, unresponsiveness, if the people aren't going to change themselves someone will do it for them."

"But I didn't even say or do nothing."

"Nevertheless, thank you."

"Nah. Politics is just donkeys and elephants t'me."

"Well, than you can add some good common sense to the mix. Heaven knows we could use some..."

"Naturally."

"It's actually a fine starting point; inaction, unresponsiveness, if the people aren't going to change themselves someone will do it for them."

"And the current 'changers' are rather ominous - a gold-obsessed Marauder, and the son of the Ji Pei. Our Freeport - becoming just another dynasty."

He looked at the vampire. "Any chance you might drop by the debates, or are you with Terry in that regards?"

"Our freeport? Are you from Eubric, sir? And what of these debates? It's the first I've heard of them."

"Not originally, but very few of us are."

"Officially, the Marauder and I are having a series of short debates over current topics - what we think should be done, how it should be done...unofficially, it's 'Here's why you should elect me, instead of my opponent.'."

"Maybe in here, but there's plenty of people out there who are." Boris took another sip from his goblet, "Debates, huh? Whatever happened to a good old fashioned duel..."

"Maybe in here, but there's plenty of people out there who are."

"Exactly! And we need a candidate who's going to remember that."

Boris took another sip from his goblet, "Debates, huh? Whatever happened to a good old fashioned duel..."

"Went out with law and order." He chuckled. "But I'd be happy to go a few rounds with you later, if it'd do anything to help convince you of my worth as a candidate.

Arena's closed, but I managed to snag a pass..."

"Nay, I am in no mood for sparring as of the moment, you might want to consider it with this marauder fellow you keep going on about. What makes you think you'll be able to enact any meaningful change, Eubric is a city filled with dozens of competing interests few of which may be mutually satisfied."

"That's an excellent question. And I'll answer it.

Tonight at the debates."

"Look, I've lived long enough to hear it all before. We need a new order and people will cooperate and all that jazz. The thing is, you're not going to make everyone happy. Ask Faust, the crown lies heavy upon the head. It's going to come down to people not cooperating unless you make them. There has to be law and order. People may not like the Bonapartes, but they've kept everyone in this city safe from pirates or worse."

"So go ahead kid, debate in conclaves. I've heard it all one too many times, and I know where I stand."

"So the guy who hires you for stuff also wines and dines you? Scandalous."

"Mind your own business Terry."

"But you're mixing your examples. Faust had trouble - lost his country, even - because he was forcing people to 'cooperate'. Moone was a dictatorship, not a country of cooperating freeman

Yes, there does have to be law and order. And an organized city of freeman could have just as much success - and more - at establishing these, as might just another dynasty."

"So go ahead kid, debate in conclaves. I've heard it all one too many times, and I know where I stand."
"Well, then you should come by and share more of that sage advice."

"Mind your own business Terry."

"No, keep going. This is just getting interesting..."

The Black Knight looked at the clock. "And it's time for me to be getting along..." He nodded to the rest of the Hall. "Good talking with everyone, and see all of you at the debate." He quietly exited the building.

"Well spoken, Jinnipher. Some people don't realize how good they've got it until they abandon what they've got."

Pretzel signs up for Quest #147

"This should prove to be very interesting."

"You've got more courage than I do, sir..."

Jinnipher nodded. "Monk."

She watched Lind leave without further input, and sighed. "Well, maybe this new quest will shed some light on who really has their head screwed on right among the houses. I've met this dragon - he acts all high and mighty but we killed his offspring easily enough. I'm going to prove that a lizard can't write history for the rest of us."

"That tyrannosaur we fought was a lizard, Jinnipher, and that thing was one helluva beastie. You're really taking on another dragon?

I cast a look Terry's way.

"That's not surprising," I mumble.

"We're heroes. It's part of the job. Besides, if he's as powerful and mighty as he says he is, what does it matter whether we're here or there?"

"I like to stay far, far away from danger, is all I'm saying."

I wonder how this kid can even be in these halls.

"The further you are from danger, the less you can do about it and the more likely you are to be caught unawares."

"Might as well throw your head into the mouth of a lion, then, if being close to danger is safer..."
