Frank Brick Wright Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Am I the only one excited with the release of the new Tintin movie — Le Secret de la Licorne? Besides being a great fan of Tintin adventures, I knew I couldn't miss it, as no ships' fan can: it features extensive action with the Licorne, an amazing french vessel created by Hergé (inspired by an historical existing ship)! Quote
Sebeus I Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Nope, you're not the only one I'm a big fan for a long time, secret of the unicorn ("het geheim van de eenhoorn" in dutch) is one of my favourites, along with its sequel "de schat van Scharlaken Rackham". I often dreamt of building the Unicorn out of the brick I got all of the comic books and some I have also on video. Quote
David Thomsen Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I'd love to talk about a possible Tintin licence, but that probably belongs in the 'dream licences' thread. Le Secret de la Licorne isn't my favourite book (that would be Tintin au Tibet), but one of my favourite sequences of any Tintin book is the pirate battle, which of course should be no surprise at all, considering how obsessed I am with Pirate Lego. What would be great about a Lego Licorne is that in minifig scale it would function as the Licorne itself, but in 'real world' scale it would function as one of the small model replicas of the ship. And then you would have to buy three of them. Quote
Bart Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I'm definitely going to see that film. I think I've read all the comics and seen all the cartoons. but that ship on that cover reminds me of the Lutine, the famous gold ship that sunk off the coast of Terschelling, in 1799. (I spend hours watching a model of it which is in my former schools hall) Bart Quote
Frank Brick Wright Posted October 27, 2011 Author Posted October 27, 2011 The story of the ship is rather interesting. Hergé commissioned a model ship to a skilled Belgian ship-models maker of Le Brillant, a french ship, for inspiration an accurate drawings. This was a very heavy ship (don't remember the number of guns, but for sure 40+). And of course I also dream of making La Licorne one day Here you have a very nice link of models with really detailed pictures of La Licorne, Le Soleil Royal and Le Brillant: http://users.skynet....ierre.guillaume And I read all Tintin books more than 8 times My favorite is probably Destination Moon but I can't say, I just love all of them Quote
tedbeard Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Speaking of drawings, I scanned the drawings published in 1983. Maybe someday I'll actually get around to trying to build her. Quote
Hiawatha Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 Speaking of drawings, I scanned the drawings published in 1983. Maybe someday I'll actually get around to trying to build her. That would be a great MOC! Quote
Aanchir Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I am looking forward to the film. When news first broke that Steven Spielberg had plans to direct a film based on The Adventures of Tintin, I was thrilled. I watched the Nelvana cartoon when I was very young and quickly became a huge fan of the comic books' humor and intrigue. I had originally hoped that a LEGO theme could be based on the series. My hopes were somewhat dashed by the Indiana Jones theme, which is in a similar genre and so would not be likely to coexist with a Tintin license, but since the movie took so long to actually move towards completion that is not likely a factor. However, if there were plans for a license at this point, it would already have been announced to cash in on the movie, so I guess our only chances of that are if the movie is a huge enough success for LEGO to become interested. I have not done any Tintin MOCs I can remember, even though I'd love to see a model of the Unicorn or of Marlinspike Hall. Tintin minifigures, obviously, are hard to replicate, given such attributes as Haddock's shaggy beard or Tintin's extremely short hair. Quote
Sebeus I Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I made some creations inspired by Tintin but nothing directly based on it, like my Shark submarine, just the idea of a shark-shaped submarine intruiged me. I did make a sunken wreck a long time ago, it was supposed to look like teh wreck of the Unicorn; well, it was a long time ago so it doesn't look much like it. I might give it another try one of these days Quote
BrickPerfection Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 I've always been very fond of Tintin and especially the ship "La Licorne" has inspired me aesthetically. I really like the "ligne claire" drwing style; would be quite interesting to see how that transforms into CGI. A wreckage MOC would really be a great idea here! Quote
Frank Brick Wright Posted October 30, 2011 Author Posted October 30, 2011 I just came from watching the movie and I must say it is great, it joins plot from "The Secret of the Unicorn", "Red Rackham's Treasure" and "The Red Sea Sharks" I didn't knew they had translated the names of Milu to Snowy and of the Duponts to Thomson… Besides that it is perfect, and has a great sea battle, though somewhat "fantastic". I really liked it, the image quality is astonishing Quote
Sebeus I Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 I didn't knew they had translated the names of Milu to Snowy and of the Duponts to Thomson… In dutch the dog is called "Bobby" and the Duponts are named "Janssens" :P It's funny how they changed names according to the country the comicbooks were released in Can't wait to see that sea battle, I already loved it in the comicbook Quote
David Thomsen Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 (edited) I'm not sure, but watching one of the trailers... does one ship sail over the other one? I feel like the ship battle is visually spectucular enough without getting silly... Edited October 31, 2011 by David Thomsen Quote

Yes, one of the ships passes over the other Still the battle is tremendously funny and the ships are built with incredible detail, so I recommend everyone to watch the movie Edited October 31, 2011 by Frank Brick Wright Quote

I really liked it, the image quality is astonishing Lucky! I'm over in the U.S., and so I have to wait until December to see the movie. I've been a lifelong Tintin fan, although as Aanchir pointed out there would be a ton of complications with doing this as a Lego theme. But I'd be excited to see some MOCs based on this movie; I once saw a beautiful MOC of the "moon tank" used in Explorers on the Moon. Quote
Hoexbroe Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Fantastic movie! Incredible loyal to the original album and style, but diverging more and more as the movie progrss. So much, as they even go on to include other stereotypes and recurrent events from other albums, although they were not part of this particular story. Anyway a lovely movie. There are surprisingly few Tintin-mocs out there. -But then again who are we to change that...¿? <lol> A "Unicorn" would be an excellent build, but only together with the smaller pirate vessel... Unfortunatly I (and my bricks) are tied up in another project currently. Quote
Ardelon Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 I think Tintin would lend itself well to a LEGO license in terms of recreation of scenes from the books (haven't seen the movie yet). In this respect, I feel it would be more doable than LotR, for instance. The problem is, I think Tintin isn't well known outside Western Europe. It wasn't always easy finding Tintin books in NYC (and yes, I have all of them! ), and it isn't a household name here in Slovakia either (though it's getting better). Maybe the movie will fix that, and by the time of a sequel, the market could be there... Quote
