davidmull Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 This should be an interesting topic and we don't get to many apart from the usual mocs and so on. I had to talk about my most challenging and most saticfying set iv ever built! Well here goes its the 8455 backhoe (misb)and I'm at it the last 2 days on and off and all I can say is it's been an amazing build and my most favourite to date!iv only come back to building technic in the last year and iv bought a lot of sets since including ,8110/8043/8264/8258 but what I have noticed about these sets is the instructions are quiet easy but this 8455 backhoe was a real challenge and the most saticfying build iv done yet and most sore fingers too :) it really is a great set. So what's ur best set/build to date? Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 (edited) 8022 is my best build experience as this was my first technic set. Edited November 2, 2011 by Alasdair Ryan Quote
davidmull Posted November 2, 2011 Author Posted November 2, 2011 Very nice but I'm not talking mocs just sets u actually buy! Quote
timslegos Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 i think my favorite is the 8043 excavator because i learned a lot about the studless building system and i modded that set so many times it was well worth the buy. tim Quote
nielsvdv Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 (edited) my best build was my 8466, i bought it 5 months ago from a friend of my girlfriend. he had it in hos room for like ages and it was full of dust, earth and even full of oil. i bought it for 70 euro's i cleaned every single brick by hand! no washing machine scratches for my 8466 i have build trucktrials since i came out of my darkages, abount 2.5 years ago, and i can tell you that i can build you a 2 or 3 speed truck in 4 hours. it is a speciality of mine, with my tatra 8X8 as a crownjouel. building the set, all cleand, with hours of work in it before even starting to build, the build was glorious it was like building an ancient trialtruck, that already knew that the craze of trialtrucks was in me Edited November 2, 2011 by nielsvdv Quote
KEvron Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 (edited) 952 tractor. it was the very last set i ever received as a kid. an instant classic. it was such a departure from any set i'd ever received before. outside of the model, i had no idea what to do with those wonderful gears, but they offered such promise! i've since purchased "better" sets as an adult, but none could ever deliver the joy that set gave me. Paul Boratko Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Even though it was over 30 years ago, I can still vividly remember unwrapping the 853 set for Christmas and just staring at the box and feeling that twisting sensation of excitement in my stomach... My wife builds all of the sets now, but I still feel that same excitement watching her open the sets and sort out the parts before she begins to build... She has to have everything just perfect before she starts... Quote
Moz Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 8043 recently, for sheer playability. It's one of the few sets where I've spent more than an hour just playing with the completed model, and even built a remote controlled dump truck to enhance the experience. And also for the amount of fiddling required to get it to actually work once it was "built" :) Way back when the go-cart was my first real Technic set (the tiny expert builder race car doesn't really count, you get same-size Town sets these days that have more Technic bits)). Because it was my only Technic I did so much more with that one set than I've done with a single set ever since. It was the chassis for everything from trucks to a sleigh. Quote
Burf2000 Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 The red Test car is the one that stuck in my head the longest, I also enjoyed the RC bulldozer and super car (old black one) Quote
Lipko Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 (edited) 8880. 8 hours of continuous building at Christmas when I was nine. Edited November 2, 2011 by Lipko Quote
Finntech Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 8880 at christmas 1994 when I was 14 years old. I remember my dad was really excited from differentials and gearbox, just like in real car! Quote
Cwetqo Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Well, 10179 has more technic parts than most technic models, so if that counts then its surely this set. Otherwise, between "real" tecnih sets I must choose 8880. Some newer models like 8258 or 8043 are more complex, but they have very good instructions and are not so difficult to build, but older sets have very dense instructions wit complex steps and are not so well made (and if you buiuld from scans visibility is really bad. So, three of my most difficult sets to build were: 8880 Supercar, 8480 Space Shuttle and 8868 Airtech Claw rig. (8480 might be more difficult to build, but I built 8880 at the begining of my return to lego and for me personally it was more difficult) Quote
Zerobricks Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 (edited) I think 8258 for the sheer complexity of the gearbox. Edited November 2, 2011 by Zblj Quote
davidmull Posted November 2, 2011 Author Posted November 2, 2011 Very interesting to see people picking newer sets,8455 was just painstaking in a good way with all those hoses to route in tight areas, love it to bits :) iv still not built my 8868 yet! Quote
Wiseman_2 Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 I really enjoyed building 8043, watching it come together and then putting on the outer panels to complete it was quite, quite satisfying. My favourite build though so far has been 8258. It has a very nice mix of gears and structure building, and it was only my second flagship set, and the first truly complex set I had, and also the first set with motorized functions. So getting it out of that parcel wrap and having this huge box with a shiny new set awaiting construction makes it probably the best one I've had Quote
allanp Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 8880. 8 hours of continuous building at Christmas when I was nine. Ditto, same set, same age, same day, 1994. Quote
Erik Leppen Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 I think 8258 for the sheer complexity of the gearbox. I'm tempted to say the same thing, however for build experience 8421 did a very good job too. It was one of my earlier really big studless sets (previous were 8436, 8435 and 8454 which were all not really complex compared to 8421), and moreover it was the last one they had in the local toy store and I had it for 20% off. I was so happy I finally got that one :D Another very satisfiying Technic build was 8479. Partly because of all those gear systems, but mainly because it's just such a nicely shaped and detailed model (except for the container actually, which is in comparison a bit lame. Quote
Rijkvv Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 8479, 8480 and 8880. There are a few sets equally challenging, but these three were more fun to build. Quote
trekman Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 It is good to see that the Barcode Truck 8479 is getting a brief mention. This marked my return to lego, and bought it as part of a job lot. It was a steady build, with a lot of gears in the middle of the truck that you were not quite sure what they did. I remember missing a piece during the build, with the punishment being a complete strip down to refit it. There was a fair bit of work in the dump body, and the front grabber was very fiddly with the flex cables. Definitely worth getting, especially if you like green parts. Quote
Kronos Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 The 8428 Concept Car. Not only was the build enjoyable, the end result was awesome. This set ended my 20+yr dark age, and began my OBSESSION with all things super car. The NK Concept, Little Devil, Ferrari 559, Ferrari Enzo, and a MODed Nitro Menace are all on display. Up next, the Sunbeam, then the NK Silver Sportscar.... Someone stop me... Quote
PlaneCrazy Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 I would have to say the 8860 Auto Chassis. I was only about 7 years old when I got it and was amazed by the complexity. The set had me captured from the moment I opened the box. I would have to say it may not have been the most complex I have built to date, but definitly the most memorable. As for complex, I would have to put either 8043 Excavator or 8110 Uni Mog on the list. Jamie Quote
Widdi Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 To me it's the 8110 Unimog. That one might have great instructions, but the size and complexity makes it difficult. I had to dismantle the whole Chassis, to correct a mistake made somewhere in the build, altough having almost 20 years of experience in LEGO (while being 23). Other difficult builds were the 5571 Black Cat Truck, which was 18 hours of building at the age of 9 years. and the 8855 Alternate model (due to missing piece callouts) mFg Widdi Quote
davidmull Posted December 27, 2011 Author Posted December 27, 2011 I'm nearly have way through 8421 and it's great so far,I alway taught this set had motorised outriggers tho but I was wrong ;( can't wait to finish it tomorrow :) Quote
Jim Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 For me it's probably the 8421 Crane Truck. First set after my dark ages and I was really amazed! After that the Modular Concept Car by Nathanael Kuipers, although that's not an official Lego set. But it's worth mentioning since the build is truly magnificent! Quote
