jhc2nmfn Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 (edited) Well This is my first community build and also the first time i have ever built something not following the instructions. I would appreciate any tips, advice, or construcive criticism as i am new to the "creating my own" building. After seeing the two offices posted before mine i considered not posting mine at all but i guess the only way ill get better is by learning from the best . I tried to model it after the first picture and then added some of my own ideas with it. 660px-CharmsClassroom by jhc2nmfn, on Flickr 82 by jhc2nmfn, on Flickr 78 by jhc2nmfn, on Flickr 77 by jhc2nmfn, on Flickr 68 by jhc2nmfn, on Flickr 74 by jhc2nmfn, on Flickr 73 by jhc2nmfn, on Flickr 72 by jhc2nmfn, on Flickr 70 by jhc2nmfn, on Flickr 69 by jhc2nmfn, on Flickr Edited January 21, 2012 by jhc2nmfn Quote
Parrothead Rasmus Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Considering that this is your first MOC (My Own Creation), you didi a really good job! I can't wait to see how your skills improve over time. And, I like the fact that you went of of Pottermore's version. Very cool. Quote
Oky Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Not bad for a first MOC! Looks very accurate and kinda reminds me of the videogame (even though that one was based on the movie). I do have a few suggestions though: I don't like the green floor at all. It looks unfinished, and if you have enough brown, gray, or tan plates or tiles, I would cover it with those. The red bricks in the back look out of place. If you can, I would replace those with brown ones. Some of the displayed tiles are a bit too random for my taste. For example, why are the Marauders Map and Daily Prophet on display in a classroom, and why is Sirius' burning face appearing on a black board? If you have any other printed or stickered tiles, I would us those. Quote
JackJonespaw Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Looks nice. Like Oky, I agree that you should cover the green plate, or use basic plates. Quote
jhc2nmfn Posted January 21, 2012 Author Posted January 21, 2012 Looks nice. Like Oky, I agree that you should cover the green plate, or use basic plates. I feel the same way on everything you said. The only reason i used the red bricks in the back was because in the picture they looked red. But i agree it does stand out because of the brightness of the Red. As far as the floor, i also agree, unfortunately i dont have enough tiles to cover it and i couldnt find a creative way to cover some of it without the rest so if you have any advice how to do that i would definitely comply. And as far as the random printed tiles, thats all i had also lol (sounds like i need to build up my collection alot. I saw that thier were frames in the picture and i was just trying to put stuff up that looked like they could be portraits or something that would be framed. The reason the map is on the table on the left is because im not creative and couldnt think what to put on there. I already had the torches on the front and it was either something like that or a plate with some cherries in it lol. Ill try to figure something out though. If anyone has any advice of what to put on the little table i would appreciate that also. Quote
Oky Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 If you don't have enough plates for the floor, use bricks. If you don't have enough of those either, you could mix light and dark gray bricks to give the look of a textured stone floor. You could even try to make a SNOT floor, but that might prove to be more difficult. And you have the big Hogwarts set from 2010, right? That one came with portrait stickers, so you could use those on the wall. Another idea would be to hang the big Gryffindor and Slytherin flags on the wall. As for the table, perhaps instead of the cherries, you could put some feathers there, if you have any, either as quilts or as the feathers they used for practicing the levitation spell in their first year. Another option would be a wizard hat. Or maybe some mail? That would be just as random as the newspaper though. Two more things I noticed: The ladder doesn't seem to be an official Lego piece. Don't you have any Lego ladders? And the rules for the community build say to not mix yellow and fleshie minifigs. Try to choose one skin tone and stick with it. Hope this helped. Quote
CarsonBrick Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 This really isn't that bad for a first creation! I definitely encourage you to build more. After all, the more you build, the better you get! I do think you should do something about the floor. Eithor use tiles, plates, or bricks, but you should do something. Also, like Oky said, you should remove those Megablok ladders, that doesn't go well with other Lego fans You could also change the chairs. I think it would look better if they were brown and brick built then have them yellow and pre-molded. In all honesty though, I actually think that t really isn't too bad and you should keep building! Vindicare Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 You should put the plate of cherries. Say they're objects that the students use to practice the charms on. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Very nice scene! Baeutiful details the tapestries are extremely realistic! Top work! Quote
lightningtiger Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Not bad ' jhc2nmfn', take 'Oky's advice onboard and you'll have a great MOC ! Keep on casting spells ' jhc2nmfn ' ! Quote
TheLegoDr Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Not a bad start. You covered all the basics. The biggest thing is the floor, like everyone else said. You can try bricks or plates or something to cover it. I guess you can picture it being a magical place and someone "charmed" the wood/stone floor into being more earthy. Oh, it was probably Peeves! I understand working with what you have and not being able to make everything exactly how the picture shows. You should use some creative license in your creation. If you can/want, you can always make some orders on bricklink for some specialized pieces for this build. But make sure you can use them for future MOCs too, otherwise it is a waste of money. This will be my first MOC and my first community build as well, so we all have some learning to do. I don't particularly want to make any bricklink orders to finish everything out, so I am working with what I have. We'll see how it turns out. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see updates. Quote
fyrmedhatt Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 This looks great in my eyes! I can only assume you've taken the above posters' suggestions, as I do not see any of the faults they mentioned in the model. You've created something that could easily be Flitwick's classroom. Awesome! Quote
Oky Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Why didn't you tell us that you updated your MOC? It's very good! The floor, the back wall, and the board where Sirius' face used to be look much better now! Not sure if I like the trophy cabinet, but it's probably better than the random tiles that were there before. Maybe it would look better without the cabinet and only with the shield on the table along with some other trophies? Anyway, this is a great first MOC now! Quote
JackJonespaw Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Ah, now this is really good. Nice updating, the floor looks great! Quote
jhc2nmfn Posted January 22, 2012 Author Posted January 22, 2012 Thanks guys, i was about 10 bricks short of what i originally decided to do and placed an order on bricklink so when those bricks come in i will change the floor to a greyish stone floor that looked pretty sweet. But i decided to put this down for now just to get rid of the green. The only reason i put the trophy cabinet (although it says james potter) is because i read on the wiki that flitwick was supposedly a champion dueler because of his knowledge of charms. WIth that being said i figured hed want to brag about the trophies hed won. I could probably make a another trophy an ex-nay on the cabinet ill make that update when my floor peices come in. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Very nice update. Just a few little changes and the entire MOC is different. A great first effort! Quote
Legomaster34 Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Wow! Great job! My only criticism would be to change the chairs to brown, or a different earthy color. Yellow just looks out of place to me... Quote
