efferman Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 the to sail the technic sea contest shows, that there are many different vehicles possible in the technic line of lego. but in this millenium there was no ship, submarine or any other water related technic model released. as far as i know was the 8839 supply ship the last vessel, which was released. . i demand not a really floating vessel, but something like diving robots, a new supply ship or something else would be nice. what do you think is the reason for this abstinence. want the kids today no ships, or did tlg think ships are boring, are the designers not be able to design a boat hull with technic parts? Alasdair Ryan Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 This Serch-sub was from 1997, which is later than the 8839 supply ship. Quote
Meatman Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 (edited) There was a submarine. LOL. posted at the same time. Edited March 15, 2012 by Meatman Quote

efferman Posted March 15, 2012 Author Posted March 15, 2012 (edited) and what a water related technic object in 20xx? Edited March 15, 2012 by efferman Quote
mobi Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Because with so many holes the ship will sink. Quote
Zerobricks Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 because its hard to make relaistic looking and especially FULL looking ships with technic? Also how do you simulate the way a screw turns? Hidden wheels? Now thats unrealistic. Quote
efferman Posted March 15, 2012 Author Posted March 15, 2012 you think it is impossible to built with studless beams a boat hull? Quote
Robert M Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Efferman, you should make it your challenge to make a decent looking hull with lego that doesn't float. It's not really that hard, because one of the entry's were a speed boat and trailer, and that looked decent. Quote
efferman Posted March 15, 2012 Author Posted March 15, 2012 oh, iam thinking about a non floating single hull tugboat or supply ship with my new 6 blade voith schneider propellers, but first i will try it out in a floating vessel Quote
timslegos Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 I think there is probably a less of a demand or maybe it is simply harder to produce ships with the new studdless system. tim Quote
Edwin Korstanje Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 (edited) I am thinking you have right efferman, i build always in studless but want give it's looks like it's studded, you only needs a lot off studless beams. Greets Edwin. Edited March 15, 2012 by VFracingteam Quote
talonmies Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Well, there were a few ships from Lego Technic: - http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/8223_Hydrofoil_7 - http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/8824_Hovercraft - http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/8480_Space_Shuttle Maybe these were not "technic" enough, though i would like to have a new boat in the next years. Sorry i cant post links until my 5th post… but the links speak for themself Quote

Thelonious monk Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 I had the idea of making a technic ship a couple of weeks before the TSATS challenge was mentioned here, for the exact reason that I wanted to make something that isn't readily available from LEGO and because I love ships and build them out of plastic and wood as well. I think it's a world that lego either didn't open up yet or they are afraid it won't sell well. I guess cars are more fun to play with (unless the boat would actually float) but nevertheless I do get a little sick of every LEGO Technic set that comes out being a car truck or building site vehicle... I'm guessing if TLG reads this forum they may seriously consider bringing out a ship of some sort in the near future. Or maybe their designers are already woring on it In any case, compliments to whomever came up with the TSATS challenge - it's spot on, exploring a relatively unknown Technic area! Quote
mobi Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 I am not looking forward to Lego Technic ships. Technic is best for land vehicles with wheels and realistic mechanism. To make a ship realistic, its hull must be made of single mold so that it can float in water (or water tight if made by parts). There should also be some cogs for fun factor. For same reason, I could not find any interest in Lego trains as well. For pure train modelling, Hornby, Bachman etc. brands produce much more realistic models. Having said so, I do know Lego sells trains in quite good numbers. So, in short, Technic cars/trucks/cranes have no equivalents in other brands. For ships, trains etc. there are lots of alternatives which are better than Lego. Quote
dolittle Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Hi, I think LEGO is missing out on its audience, I don't agree about realistic being a ship that would float in the tub - this isn't the aim of LEGO - like they discourage you from Sand testing your Caterpillar diggers in a real sand scenario. LEGO Technic is about: 1) Good looking sets - i.e. they look more realistic than LEGO City and similar 2) About inner mechanics - wheels that move, parts that do stuff etc A ship with a Crane on it, would be still a nice thing to do have Same as a Space Shuttle or even the ISS Space Station, either would be a very nice model to have (I know that the Space Shuttle had a Technic model.. :)) So I would welcome a mookup that might not float in the water, but still look like a real ship. Same with hovercrafts, tanks (yes they won't make them), cannons (they won't make these too), etc... Quote
andythenorth Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 +1 to some ships PF hovercraft would be awesome, but would need some very specialist parts Quote
Robert M Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 I don't think that Technic actually has to work. It's all good making a ship with a single hull, that floats. But then it's a bit pointless, as if we wanted a functional ship, we'd go to a specialist shop, and not buy the lego. On the other hand, it Lego made a ship, with holes in, I wouldn't see a problem. Half of the time, maybe more, all the sets do are sit on shelves. I do think lego will go back to releasing Technic ships, but not right now, as they seem to be very keen on using wheels. Quote
Meatman Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Here is another little Technic watercraft that I don't think was mentioned. Quote
captainmib Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Why should technic ships be realistic (without holes) while al technic vehicles have holes? I don't see any cars outside that have holes... I think it's truly possible to build nice ships out of lego. Just take a look at the contest right now. And if that doesnt convince you, take a look at the 8425-1 B-model: I surely hope Lego will produce a ship in the future. To widen it's model range, to be new and refreshing... Quote
Blakbird Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 There have been a few "watercraft" over the years, but nothing recently. Quote
mobi Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 (edited) Why should technic ships be realistic (without holes) while al technic vehicles have holes?[/Quote]A ship is not a ship if it can't float in water. Lego is still predominantly aimed for children. If a child builds a ship which then sinks in water he will be upset. Holes in vehicles does not matter because holes there does not prevent fundamental working of the model. Lego often encourages role play among children. A land vehicle or even an aeroplane (assuming how children play) can simulate role play but ships (with holes) can't. This is just my opinion though. I remember during my childhood age I was never interested in Lego ships. Edited March 17, 2012 by mobi Quote

Tropy Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I also would love a submarine (it has been demonstrated that power function motors work well under water)!!! ...well if not a submarine or a boat, at least a good realistic propeller guys, pls TLC pls...look at the struggles that all the AFOL have to go through every time they try to build a floating thing...a good propeller is simply not there...both for water and for air (there is one good aircraft propeller but that comes encased with a brick and a gear that makes it useless)...
