SteampunkDoc Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 You know, I actually like Beorn's design now. The first back pic was less than impressive, the first front pic was horrible, but this shot redeems everything. He looks good, and I'm ready to see him in action. As to the sets, I may get the Mirkwood Elf Army, it looks like a great deal. And Thandy looks amazing. Also, bunches of pretty elves! Dol Guldor Ambush looks decent, but I was hoping it would have been a bit smaller and cheaper. Especially since I'd more-or-less only be getting it for Beorn. Dol Guldor Battle looks really sweet, and I'd love to get it, but am not ready to drop a lot on another lego set just yet. But if it goes on sale low enough I may. Laketown, Eh, I love the Laketown figures, and it's a solid set, but not high enough of my 'We needs it' list. Quote
Darth Punk Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Gandalf 5'6", I stand (shorter) corrected. Quote
Mahtion Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Gandalf 5'6", I stand (shorter) corrected. It's no big deal. We have all been getting into some heavy Tolkien lately. I think we all confuse certain elements of the movie as being the same in the book. It doesn't help when some lore is hard to find or has multiple versions. Sometimes there is no definitive answer. Ian Mckellen is a great actor and his height is ok around the bunch of 6ft actors. If PJ went with a 5'6" Gandalf, it would look odd to many of us to see such a below average height for a mighty but humble wizard. Just curious where we all get the information from when dealing with Middle Earth legendarium. Also does it seem like Beorn's hair is wrong in Lego? It looks like a sandy brown or dark blonde but in the movie stills it looks almost grey and speckled. Quote

On the picture there is alot of grey and alot of brown, together they end up looking like dark tan. On the set picture its brown and tans. If anything I think lego's version isnt brown enough. Quote
SandMirror38 Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Could someone lead me to this 'great picture' of Beorn?? Quote
Darth Punk Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Yeah I've been on one wiki to rule them all a good deal lately. I think that is the source of the height, but obviously it belonged to someone else. I checked and found the quote you referred to. The Tolkien gateway is the other source I've been reading. I'm not really sure which one is better. I retread the hobbit a few months back and now retreading TLoR . Which I then on planning on reading the silmarillion for the first time. I feel like,I have middle earth oozing out my ears. I love the mini figs with the new sets but still unsure about the sets. I'm holding judgement until I can see the actual sets and not just a pic of the box. But the whole thing about the hobbit is its really about the characters and not so much about the locations. The lonely mountain is really the only iconic place in the book, other than hobbiton and rivendale. Add that plus the ruins featured in the movies and there really is not much TLG can have sets of other than grey bricks. Quote
Mahtion Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Reading the Silmarillion is almost academic but if you like those kinds of pseudo historical narratives then you are in for a treat. There are a ton of names, much more than LOTR and many sound alike. It is very easy to confuse characters! I think it took about three readings to let the story and events really sink in. The first read through was almost a blur, it was that dense with names and characters. The Seven sons of Feanor, all the Elf Chieftains who became Kings who have multiple names. Then you can have Quenya and Sindarin versions just to really make things hard for first time readers. Despite the flaws and questionable canon within, the Silmarillion remains my favorite of the Tolkien works. Quote
DaleDVM Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 (edited) After reading several pages, I was very glad that someone had finally notice the arches in light bley. This is the most important development for me since I love to build MOCs. I have them in other colors but for castle builders light bley is crucial. I love the minifigs. I think they are perfectly representative of their movie counterparts. I do not blame LEGO for PJ's designs. As for the builds. I think DGA and DGB are nice representations of the ruins. DGB does remind me a lot of the Moria set. The MEA is an alright army builder set, although I don't know what to do with all of those Thranduils. The build does leave a bit to be desired but it has the aforementioned arch in it! As for the elf debate. Sure it would be nice to get the elvish helms and shields. However, they are so unique that it would be hard to use them for any other purpose without making an army look like the elves. However considering they make new molds for something like a hat or beard that will never be used again, I suppose the helms and shields will get more use overall. Last but not least as an avid army builder I can say this. Although some of these sets are conducive to army building on a small scale, it is still incredibly expensive to do so with the Hobbit or LOTR sets. Elf army at $40 ends up being 5.71 per fig if you include the Warg as a figure. Uruk hai army was better at $30 coming out to 4.29 per fig including the horse. Unless TLG releases some sort of small battle packs like they do with Star Wars, I will just save my money for castle armies. Unfortunately I have had to shy away from LOTR armies since the cost per fig is just too high. Don't get me wrong. If TLG does offer battle packs, I will be buying them up like crazy. After all the epic LOTR MOCs need armies counting in the hundreds to populate the huge battle scenes from the movies. Right now it is just not very cost effective compared to castle figs. Castle figs not only come in battle packs but in chess sets at very low prices which add up to less than $2 per fig. Edited October 24, 2013 by DaleDVM Quote
Mutant Orc Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 That would be splendid if the quality of the moulds, pieces and colouring was spot on. They're all common flaws in the newest Kingdoms one. Quote
DaleDVM Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 @SMC I agree with you completely! That would be sweet. @ Mutant Orc Good point! I am also concerned with the quality of some of the figs we get. However, when I am putting 3 or 4 hundred figs onto a MOC minor defects don't bother me nearly as much as paying $5 or more per figure. Cuz that hurts really bad... Quote

I never get anywhere near 50, let alone a 100 of any one figure!! Quote
Faefrost Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 I think most of the modern take on Gandalf as tall and looming came mostly from the Ralph Bakshi movie. And particularly the posters for the movie Quote
TheWorldAhead Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Could someone lead me to this 'great picture' of Beorn?? It can be seen one page back, on page 246 of this thread. Overall, I think both Dol Guldur sets and Lake Town have brilliant designs, though I am not sure about potential prices. The minifigures are good all around, but the Necromancer is kind of disappointing; he looks a bit like a zombie. Not exactly a stellar minifigure representation of Benedict Cumberbatch The Mirkwood Elf Army may be my favorite of the lot, but honestly the construction is rubbish. What is the world coming to when I'm buying half my LEGO sets for what amount to two-inch tall action figures? Quote
Artanis I Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 I think most of the modern take on Gandalf as tall and looming came mostly from the Ralph Bakshi movie. And particularly the posters for the movie I think most people tend to think "tall and thin" when you talk about wizards in general, or even most other magic-based characters. I don't know why that is though. Quote
Captain Settle Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 but the Necromancer is kind of disappointing; he looks a bit like a zombie. Yeah, he looks a bit like an ape. And if this movie ends with all the dwarves being killed by an ape who lives in a castle then I am going to be very annoyed. Quote
Mutant Orc Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 He looks very ape-ish, maybe the photographers mixed up the figure with an evil Chima-Garmadon!!?? Quote

SMC Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 The picture of the elf army with 2 sets one left handed one right handed. Is this how its meant to be are they telling us to buy 2 again. Quote

As would I, the two most anticipated figures from that set excluding azog as we have all seen him is the necromancer and radagast, l also want a back view to all of the sets too if that's not much to ask GRogall The picture of the elf army with 2 sets one left handed one right handed. Is this how its meant to be are they telling us to buy 2 again. Off course they are , although IMO it looks much better than the official image of the two black gate sets put together Quote
