You are behind in your rent.

We have been sent to collect it.

We will require 400 gold.

Also, given that you did not answer your door and we were require to take other measures to speak to you, you may also be charged for the repair to the floor and ceiling. But we will start with the rent.

And since you would be rid of us quickly, I suggest you fetch it now.

"Justice, owes nothing to no man. All men owe everything to justice. Krook knew this and soon shall you and your scummy cronies upstairs."

The were-bat moved his axe from hand to hand, his red eyes glancing back and forth between each of the heroes.

Nerwen's keen eyes had adjusted to the gloom. She could see the axe clearly and to the man-bat she spoke firmly, certain and sure.

Krook is dead. Murdered we suspect.

Now the inn belongs to another, fairly exchanged and bound by the laws of property. You are not the owner, your place here is purchased. If you would uphold part of the law, you must uphold it all or your stance is merely another self-serving salve to prickly conscience.

As for cronies upstairs, the fact that we entered from that direction is not proof of allegiance to their methods or goals. State cause or leave off assumptions.

I say to you, if you see yourself as some kind of knight in the dark or as a great detective fighting on the side of the oppressed citzenry, if you think that entitles you to recognition and reward, step into the light. Go on. Be recognised as the author of your actions. But if you hide by day, your mask and disguise must be complete. You must needs be a rent paying, unremarkable, unnoticed tennant of a quiet room in a quiet inn. So, which are you Justice?

I know your type. I am your type. We are men of justice and order, who seek the stabilization of this cruel world. We are exiles, slaves, who've been oppressed far too long have seeked to act on it.

Yet you hide in the shadows, behind locked doors, disguising yourself from the world around you. I know - I know - the hiding in the shadows, living in angst and guilt for the world you left behind will do nothing. If you wish to act, then act. Go out in the world and do something, don't hide from mere debts. If you want to change the world, start by changing yourself. And for that, we can start with paying this debt.

"Krook and I ner' had a legal agreement. He knew what I did and was my only confidant, if he has been struck down then justice will eventually take its course upon his murderers. I do not do what I do for the glory or riches like those accursed sell swords of Heroica Hall, no I do it for the plights that will never reach its doors. You do not know of what you speak assassin, I have operated in this town for nearly 20 years. 20 years of watching this city slump deeper and deeper into the stench of corruption and wickedness. 20 years as those in power became nearly the equal to the likes of the Wolfgang or Metasimians or Bloodpaws in their villainy. Even tonight, the city's finest ladies and gentleman have eaten well. They have eaten upon Eubric's wealth. It's spirit. But their feast is nearly over. From this moment tonight, none of them will be safe. A great power is rising and even my attempts at stalling the city's crash into oblivion will prove frivolous. My sole satisfaction is found in destroying what little I can of the black sores upon this city, starting with the leaders of two of the most hated gangs above us and then to whatever future waits for me. If you wish for gold, you will find I have none, but it matters little. I will leave this very evening, somewhere out there, justice is simply rewarded by its right to exist free of distraction or impediment."

Nerwen swings her mourning star idly. The glow from the spiked head causing faint shifting shadows on the wooden floor.

You are free to try your arm against those upstairs. But first I have a question for you.

If you saw a man running off with a merchant's purse full of, say 400 gold pieces, if he had stolen it, unrepentantly, would you stop him? Would you prove the error of his ways upon his body? Or do you approve of theft and larceny despite your huffing about justice and opposing wickedness?

Were-bat seem like decent fellow. It sound like were-bat might do some good work for sake of city. Cronk would wish that matter of rent could be cleared up without misunderstandings.

Were-bat understands position Cronk and friends are in, right? Friends are honor bound to collect rent. Cronk is afraid that friends cannot just take were-bat's word that Krook and were-bat had arrangement. If were-bat has no gold at all, perhaps new landlord might accept IOU or promise of future payment?

"Which is why I intend to leave this inn, my friend. I have watched this gnome who has twiddled and twaddled his thumbs thinking only of money and the things it can buy. He has no care for the beggar outside his door, nor the lechery that occurs in his very building, he does not desire justice only wealth. There will be no reasoning with him that justice's benefit to the entirety of the city is payment enough for its simple existence.

As for your question elf, and what if the man had given the thief his gold, but in spite he now reports it stolen to the thief's harm?"

I know the downfall of which you speak. But it is because of this downfall we must fight, to preserve what little order and justice is left. Leaving these debts unpaid is not justice, it only feeds the chaos. Could you live with that? Could you live with the knowledge you've assisted that which you wish to destroy? I could not.

Using diplomacy: It is unfair to make assumptions about others. Has Were-bat spoken to Greely about justice? Besides it is not for were-bat to decide whether or not to pay rent. Staying in room not belonging to one's self obligates were-bat to pay owner of room rent. That is law. Were-bat may have had understanding with Krook, but no one living can verify that. Were-bat must make things right, or is were-bat above law?

(Whispers to friends): Hmmm... Cronk cannot remember what Greely said to do if tenant not able to pay rent. Did friends ask? Cronk would not like to get into altercation with were-bat since were-bat seem like being has best interest of city at heart. But since were-bat seems to be leaving inn anyway, Cronk wonders if that would count as "kicking out" non-paying tenant.

"If you cared for this downfall then you would not labor against it for fame or wealth and you would know that justice does not owe any man anything. Krook understood it, but it seems you do not. Now if you will stand aside I will finish off the scum upstairs and be on my way."

Posted

You mistake my words - I have never fought for fame nor wealth. I fight for the stabilization of Eubric - once I took a... stroll through Triad Park, and saw the destruction there. But through all that I saw hope, I saw the children of Lords Hinckwell and Shadeux as friends instead of enemies, and saw that if we could keep the peace until they came in power, Eubric might see the sun shine again. That is what I fight for. But if we want to start change, we must start with small things like these debts.

Then the thief is made a thief by keeping what is not his.

You keep saying justice owes no man anything. You are a fool. There is no justice except what men practice.

But all this is waffle.

Your choices are these. Pay the 400 gold and we leave, or we escort you from the building right now.

"I will leave of my own accord, unfettered by sell swords such as yourself. You rogue, if you consider yourself a true advocate for the oppressed of this city, then you will shrug off the chains of that Hall that employs you and purchases your mercenary services with fame and fortune."

Nerwen draws the shackles of war from her satchel. Popping the crocodile handbag away she places one end of the shackles of war on her wrist.

We can do fetters if needed.

If you are bent on attacking the guests of this inn upstairs, the path lies through us. And it is not an easy one.

Will you go quietly?

Speaking up, Xander starts: "Do you have a personal vendetta against the people upstairs? What exactly have they done that is so offensive to you?"

Whispering to the others, "The room upstairs does not owe back rent, do they? Perhaps we could persuade them into paying 400 gold if life or death comes into question? I have a feeling we will not easily persuade this bat-man..."

"The room upstairs is occupied by none other than Zathwin and Hairbelly, both high ranking representatives of the Metasimian and Bloodpaw gangs respectively. If it is a fight you wish to have elf then it is what you will get. Do you speak for the entirety of your party though?"

Posted

I would rather resolve this peacefully, however you are making it difficult to do so. Is there nothing we can offer that would convince you to pay this debt, to right this wrong?

Xander, that's a bright idea, but it still allows our friend here to go on his rampage.

...I'll pay well for the chemicals. Throwing you money for free would hardly be fair - I might as well pay the rent myself - but I could give you a lot for the chemicals, if that's what it takes.
