DARKspawn Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 Hi guys, it's been a while since I posted here but I am still lurking ;-) My latest MOC proved fairly popular with my fellow castlers over on Classic-Castle so I thought I'd share it with you guys too Pic is Brickshelf link About the MOC: "A tower house is a particular type of stone structure, built for defensive purposes as well as habitation. Such buildings were constructed in the wilder parts of Great Britain, particularly in Scotland, and throughout Ireland, beginning in the High Middle Ages and continuing at least up to the 17th century. The remains of such structures are dotted around the Irish and Scottish countryside. Some are still intact and even inhabited today, while others stand as mere shells in a field or on a hillside." - Wikipedia Approximately 1,000 1x2 Bricks went into this MOC & I estimate about 1,500 bricks total. This MOC began as an experiment with irregular shapes, so unfortunetly there is no interrior at this time. Comments welcome :-D Quote
mrts Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 Hmm, i missed this MOC of yours.. glad you posted it here. It really looks nice. With lots of SNOT techniques, and original architectures *y* I also like the windows. Good job! Quote
Asuka Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 Very good! *y* With that tall tower on one and that small tower to the other side is Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted February 19, 2007 Governor Posted February 19, 2007 Yet another astounding Castle MOC! There are certainly some talented Castle MOCers in this forum. I like the colour scheme you're using - you've got the green ground which contrasts well with the grey castle, and then you've got the red roof pieces which act as highlights breaking any potential for monotony to creep through. One thing that I always wonder is how long did it take to build? I'm a very slow MOCer so something like this would probably take me years. Quote
DARKspawn Posted February 20, 2007 Author Posted February 20, 2007 Thanks for your comments everyone :) It took longer to collect the bricks than to build, probably about 2 weeks worth of 1-2 hour sessions a day. It was atually torn down & rebuilt again in that period too. Quote
Berry Syedow Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Darkspawn, I was blown away when I saw this beauty on brickshelf! Just as the others have said, it has a very unique architectural style. The red and bley also compliment each other surprisingly well. (I'd post a more in depth review, but I'm starting to get sleepy. Great work, though!) Quote
Norro Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 I'm going to have to be honest... It is a very well done MOC, but lacks a certain 'wow factor' I associate with your work. My bias may be increased because of the subject matter, the tower houses scattered all over Ireland are majestic not just because of their endurance but because of their amazing locations, and simple nature (this one seems a little over complicates- scotland X-D ?) God Bless and thanks for sharing! Nathan Quote
DARKspawn Posted February 21, 2007 Author Posted February 21, 2007 Thanks again, everyone! & Nicely spotted, Berry ;-) It's going to be my mission to make bley okay lol I'm going to have to be honest... It is a very well done MOC, but lacks a certain 'wow factor' I associate with your work. My bias may be increased because of the subject matter, the tower houses scattered all over Ireland are majestic not just because of their endurance but because of their amazing locations, and simple nature (this one seems a little over complicates- scotland X-D ?) Thanks for your honesty, Nathan! I can honestly take that as a compliment ;-) It's certainly hard to argue with someone who can reach out and actually touch the subject matter! In truth my collection is still lacking in the landscape department, originally it was set on a crag of dark grey, but I ran out of bricks :-( & had to reassess. Hey poor scotts! They had those Brochs too, & some great strongholds! Not that I am Scottish at all, my Grandfather is actually Irish :-D Quote
Starwars4J Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 What a beautiful MOC this is! It's quaint, and yet full of life at the same time! I'm a huge fan of your windows on this piece, they make me want to experiment more with my current project (oh, if only you weren't 300 miles away, my project :'-( ) I agree the landscape could use a few tweaks, (but then again I can't landscape to save my life) but the overall majesty of this MOC isn't really harmed by it. I like that you weren't afraid to leave the rounded tower as just grey though. The "big grey wall syndrome" and I are old friends, and on most occasion I like to take the path of just using bricks at different levels id discoloration to try to give them texture, otherwise I don't worry about it. It's too much hassle to throw in dark grey pieces as well! And besides that, it never quite looked natural to me to have them anyway. Anyway, I look forward to seeing more of your MOCs :-) Quote
Sir Dillon Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 Very nice creation yet again. :-) I really like all the different levels and platforms of it, and how tall the whole house is in general. The various details you've put along the walls are very nice, and add to the to the house nicely. The windows are a neat design, but to be honest, I don't really like the way they look on this creation. I wouldn't suggest changing them though, because it seems I'm the only one who thinks this. ;-) Is there an interior? I can see what Nathan means with the landscaping. While it doesn't look bad at all now, I think it's a bit boring... maybe adding some trees would help this. Overall I really like this... your creations inspire me to keep building. :-) Quote
Capn Frank Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 That's a very nice tower house. I love the narrowed windows also. I tried looking and looking and couldn't find a single 1x5 castle wall brick. That 1x2 brick construction looks great *y* Do you plan on having an interior? P Quote
DARKspawn Posted February 21, 2007 Author Posted February 21, 2007 Originally I was going to build an interrior, but I am beginning to think it might just be easier moving on to my next project ;-) I am not a big fan of prefab walls either, I used to use them alot but they really restrict the shapes you are able to create. I like the look of 1x2s too. Thanks once again everyone :-D Quote
DARKspawn Posted March 3, 2007 Author Posted March 3, 2007 Hi, JJ There are no specific Viking pieces in this MOC, unless I have missed something ;-) Quote
