Rom1Kno Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Hi all As i don't have enough money to build all i want, i keep building on LDD to spend some time, i've worked on it 3 days This will be my first minifig scaled creation, a full steampunkn train My first part is the travelers coach, it fits 16 seated minifigs, and some more standing up It has a lot of machinery on the sides and the roof, some steam tankers for the brakes, and the wheels/rails are hidden under by the side machinery, as i wanted it to be "floating" it is composed by 2175 parts, so it's quite a big build, but i like challenges ;) roof is openables to place minifigs inside, and the side doors are openable too Here are the pics, thx for watching ! comments are welcomed ! i'll update the post with the rest of the train when they'll be done ! Rom1Kno Posted May 24, 2013 Author Posted May 24, 2013 thx ! working on the restaurant coach now, hope i'll finish it end of te week end too bad some of the parts composing it are no more available on pick a brick or others self service buying websites Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 24, 2013 Author Posted May 24, 2013 well infact, as i want all my coaches to have the same exterior design, i've just designed a new interior for the restaurant coach So finished a lot faster than the first, here it is: so the details: a bar with 2 beer serving device, 2 beer barrels, a lot of glasses, bottles and so on, 3 tables for 2 minifigs, and a place to have a drink on the other side, not so many work on this one, but i find the interior really cool thx for watching ! Quote
Frank STENGEL Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Thes coaches are beautiful. Am I dreaming, or are they 17 wide? Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 24, 2013 Author Posted May 24, 2013 (edited) thx ! well it's 20 wide and 54 long counting the pins for assembling coaches together ;) so it's big, really big The restaurant coach is "only" 1916 parts composed ;) Edited May 24, 2013 by Rom1Kno Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 24, 2013 Author Posted May 24, 2013 (edited) hi all ! here's a new one for the train Took the wheelbase of my coaches, shortened it by a 1/3, keepin the same design way for the exterior, but the interior is a lot more rough and spartiat, there's only some tools, a compiter and a phone to talk with those in the loco, no wooden floor a coal container take place on one side, is drains automatically the coal to the locomotive, and on the other side there are 4 water barrels, linked to deliver more water to loco or braking system. As the others, roofs is openable as the doors are, and it has two loading gates openable on sides, it counts 1473parts thx for watching, comments welcome EDIT: changed a bit the design of the brake-mechanic housing, and hide more the wheels Edited May 24, 2013 by Rom1Kno Quote
Hrw-Amen Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Very interesting. Twenty studs wide you say? I think that is quite big for what we usually get in our train forum, but it is long as well so that kind of balances it out a bit. Looking at the one shot where the wheels can be seen and the track underneath, they do look very tiny and small and I wonder of they would not get broken under such a monster of a coach? Maybe they need more wheels / axles to distribute the mass of the coach? It is quite hard to tell from the image how many wheels are at each end? It is certainly different though and although I understand what you say about getting the bricks to build it, maybe one day you will have enough to at least build the locomotive and tender? Any bits that you do get around to building though I think we would be very interested in seeing the results of your steam punk engine and coaches. We may have to make some adjustments to our stations though to be able to accomodate such a beast!! Quote
Commander Wolf Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Yay, steampunk! This is really cool in a really strange way. The one thing that really strikes me is that your loading gauge is enormous... but maybe your world just has a really wide right of way with no tunnels XD Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 25, 2013 Author Posted May 25, 2013 (edited) thx for your comments ;) i really appreciate that, after such a long dark age (8 years), finding a new way of approching legos is such a great thing ! i've been counting and packing all the lego bricks i have at my mom house today, but i'll have to buy , well a lot more to build them yeah it's big, i agree, but i've to admit i love big things, and as i'm still a kid in my head, when i was 10 i would have loved to have such a big build in my hands and spend a week to build it. And for me, as seen is films such as wild wild west, steampunk is a kinda dreamed thing, like what you would see in your early-20th-century-man mind, always bigger and bigger, and faster :D it have 4 wheels at each end, but i'll take your advice and add two more axles at each end, so it'll be a 16 wheeler per coach i've picked small wheels cause the big deal of this all moc is to hide those weels, as the entire train was floating on some magnets or other thing like that, so big wheels would have been harder to hide, but the cheat is that this train is for display, at least now in my mind, i don't want to motorize it but more like some static display with a steampunk train station and train repare space, so no need to move it or just a bit ;) I've found quite all the bricks, but the tricky ones are the round shaped for the corners, they are no more available on pick a brick, but i will find them for sure Yeah, in my mind world there are biiiiig straight lines, no obstacles, and this train would be my favorite way of traveling across a country, with a suit, high hat, and everything steampunk-way-of-life :D Once again thanks, it just give me motivation to buy more and more bricks and build this IRL Edited May 25, 2013 by Rom1Kno Quote
Spitfire2865 Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 If you need parts, Bricklink is a great site. I personally havent bought from them yet but almost everyone else has. They have almost every Lego part ever produced in some form or another. http://www.bricklink.com -heres a link. Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 25, 2013 Author Posted May 25, 2013 thx for the link, i'll check it later to see if they got'em, hope yes caus if not i'll have to digg the web to find em ahah Quote
Spitfire2865 Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Trust me. If bricklink doesnt have the part youre looking for, it doesnt exist! Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 25, 2013 Author Posted May 25, 2013 it's this f****n part, the 246226 facet brick 3x3x1, i can't find it, bricklink tells me no item found ... Oups, this is just the code that's false, when i tipe facet brick i can find it ;) Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 25, 2013 Author Posted May 25, 2013 hi, here's a little WIP of my loco, it's for sure not finished at all, but the basic shapes are done, now i need to add some .... well a lot of mechanics and tubing and other things on the exterior, add the front cow catcher, some more mechanics and a fully detailed interior and here's a pic showing the train and a minifg on the side, like that you'll see the scale of this quite big train :D as you see with his high hat the minifig will still be abble to stand up in the coach See ya ! Rom1Kno Posted May 26, 2013 Author Posted May 26, 2013 (edited) hey guys i need your help ! as you've read, i want this train to be sort of floating on a magnetic field or sumthin like that, but that means that there are no wheels, so no real way of propeling with rails. So here's my question: how do you think i can propel this train ? as i don't want classical propelers cause it will not fit the design, should oi use turbines or things like that ? Thx for your answers ! or i was thinkin 'bout that http://www.google.fr/imgres?um=1&sa=N&biw=1366&bih=643&hl=fr&tbm=isch&tbnid=OXXXdsOWX55zCM:&imgrefurl=http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details%3Fmid%3Da7a263d67a658702d68117a3077778d7&docid=8LklpuuAWKlnNM&imgurl=http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/download%253Fmid%253Da7a263d67a658702d68117a3077778d7%2526rtyp%253Dlt%2526ctyp%253Dother%2526ts%253D1202487665000&w=400&h=260&ei=fuehUeP2Oav40gWM9YGQAg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=4&vpy=269&dur=5489&hovh=181&hovw=279&tx=149&ty=96&page=4&tbnh=152&tbnw=244&start=68&ndsp=26&ved=1t:429,r:74,s:0,i:312 Edited May 26, 2013 by Rom1Kno Quote
Spitfire2865 Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Well what do you mean exactly. It could have something like a magnetic driving wheel, which would repel the mag-lev track, making the train move. Just like that reference image you have. Something along the same lines. Just I would maybe have 2 of those round wheel housings on each side, and maybe a steam locomotive connecting rod hooked up on each side. And maybe you could gear those connecting rods to the wheels the model actually sits on, so if the model moves, it appears to be functioning. Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 26, 2013 Author Posted May 26, 2013 i was thinking abou tthe same thing, two of those wheels housing on each side, and some traditionnal steam train rods with a piston, and some technic wheels to make it steampunk ;) i'll see if possibly i could link the mechanics to the weels, would be great to see it moving :D Thanks for the answer, helped me a lot Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 26, 2013 Author Posted May 26, 2013 a new lil update, i've quite finished the first side mechanics for magnetic wheel ;) see ya ! Quote
Sir E Fullner Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 She sure looks pretty sweet. Already, it feels like a Jules Verne novel. Keep up the good work! Quote
Spitfire2865 Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 I didnt really mean for an exposed wheel or pistons. Look at some pictures of this locomotive. https://www.google.com/search?gs_rn=12&gs_ri=psy-ab&tok=Ux3kINhpvBd-9jTV4D6x8A&cp=12&gs_id=1c&xhr=t&q=city+of+truro&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47008514,d.dmg&biw=1366&bih=643&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=5VOiUb3vCMPE4APf44HQDg I meant something like this sorta. Where the rod is exposed but the wheels and pistons arent. I think it would look better on the sides instead of big wheels turning with all those gears. Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 26, 2013 Author Posted May 26, 2013 (edited) i'm kinda inspired by Jules Verne, he is my favorite books author, i got all his books at home and i read'em all the time ... I kinda love his wolrd, when i was a kid i firts read 20 000 leagues under the sea, and i was astonished, i dreamed about it for a long time Thx for your comments, it really helps me I'll test if i can hide some of those gears to make it slicker, and i'll show you the result ow and by the way, i think it's to short compared to my other coaches, so it will be added so more brickes so that i'll be abble to add a second big wheel, and a second piston, i want it to be huge, really huge Edited May 26, 2013 by Rom1Kno Quote
Spitfire2865 Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Honestly, In my opinion, the piston doesnt look right. It just sort of juts out from the rest of the loco, and just looks out of place. Maybe if it was a piston action rather than a crankshaft action it would look better. Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 26, 2013 Author Posted May 26, 2013 ok i'll take that in note, i've already get rid of that piston, and tomorrow (it's midnight here :D ) i'm gonna do it again, less gears, and more streamlined bodywork Quote
