zephyr1934 Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 If you are thinking you would only build this for static display, probably cheaper to omit the train bits altogether. If you are thinking more that you would run it, on the mechanical side I see a few problems that you will likely encounter. First off, the lego curves are very tight. It is hard enough to get 8 wide trains to handle curves well (the space between cars has to be very large so the corners on the cars don't knock together). Since this is your first train you don't have anything you need to match, in which case you might want to consider trying a larger gauge (e.g., LGB) that also has the advantage of wider radius curves. Second off, the lego train motors are not very strong and your train looks as if it will be very heavy. If you do power it in lego, you'll probably want to use XL motors, the most powerful motors lego makes. If you are moving away from classic propulsion, well, then shouldn't the locomotive be a walking engine, with eight spider legs pulling it along the track? Quote
harnbak Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 (edited) Very interesting - lots of nice 'in-car' details. As it looks quite different, it's hard to imagine on tracks. Too bad it is not going to be build. Edited May 27, 2013 by harnbak Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 27, 2013 Author Posted May 27, 2013 well as i've seen here it's quite hard to get a train that can run the lego tracks nicely, but for now it's a static display train, i don't want it to be motorized, first of all because i haven't enhough room to have a full track in my 35 square meters flat, and because since it's really big i think it will be hard to get it run nicely, softly and fast ;) I'm gonna build it, don't really know when cause it already counts more than 10k bricks with engine+tanker+3 coahces, so i'll have to get a lot of bricks, but i really want to build it since it's my biggest lego project ever, I already got like 2 or 3k black bricks, and the same in the 2 greys, so now i need to see what i lack and order it but in future why not motorizing it when i'll have a larger space to dedicate to hobbies, and if it's the case i'll certainly use what ya say for the tracks thx for your comments ! Rom1Kno Posted May 27, 2013 Author Posted May 27, 2013 hi all ! i've done some modifications, it's a WIP now but i've done something i think is quite good I've shortened the cab of 5 studs, and added 14 studs of lengh, and said i've integrated the magnetic wheels in the body now i need to add mechanics a bit to make the side less empty and all the slick parts will be movable as under them there will be the gears and others, detail the interior and do a magnetic field production unit Here's the lil snapshot hope ya like ;) Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 27, 2013 Author Posted May 27, 2013 hey, sorry for no editing the previous post but as the exterior is finished i think it's better to post a new one so as said there are now 2 mag wheels per side, less gears, and it's now really long, 72 studs long exactly for 20 wide ;) there are pistons but they are hiden by the wheels, and now i have to design the interior thx for watching, Quote
Spitfire2865 Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 Not really what I envisioned but still looks nice. Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 27, 2013 Author Posted May 27, 2013 thx, i tried other design but it wasn't lookin nice, it was kinda like some butter would have melt under the sun ;) Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 27, 2013 Author Posted May 27, 2013 (edited) i've tried with one wheel per side, and i've tried to hide them more, but i didn't managed ;) Here are the final shots, after some troubleshouting about the frame and designing the interior, it's done inside you got an access to the boiler, the magnetic field producer, the pump for coal and water, and the necesseary commands and controls to get all this steam engine workin great, 3 minifigs can fit in this tight area the engine with the tanker coach the full train: engine, tanker, restaurant coach and two travelers coaches hope ya like it as i do :D Edited May 27, 2013 by Rom1Kno Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 28, 2013 Author Posted May 28, 2013 (edited) tHe smokestack is streamlined too, so that's the technic bricks with 1 1/2 m connectIng bush on top of the boiler ;) Edited May 28, 2013 by Rom1Kno Quote
Spitfire2865 Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 As a little suggestion, I would add a slightly more pronounced stack. With that, you can still keep the overall streamlined appearance. It would help better identify this as a steam locomotive. Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 28, 2013 Author Posted May 28, 2013 ok thx, i'll test it and post a snapshot ;) Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 28, 2013 Author Posted May 28, 2013 (edited) so here is the trial for the smoke stacks I put 2 cause there are 2 boilers, and here is xhat i came up with side view: front view: 1st possibility: 2nd possibility: what ya think ? EDIT: repositionned the stacks, i think it looks better ;) Edited May 28, 2013 by Rom1Kno Quote
Spitfire2865 Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 Keep the stacks open, but I actually like both designs. The forward stack is more traditional but the mod boiler stack looks really cool. And you do have two boilers so it could possibly have the stack in the center. Though I do like the forward stack design and how it is very pronounced. I think the forward design is. Best. Just leave the stacks open. Don't put lids on em. Quote
Rom1Kno Posted May 28, 2013 Author Posted May 28, 2013 (edited) i kept the traditionnal design as i left them forward, i think it looks better and it allows me to add a big light on the front ;) i've finalized design, adding some stuff to make it slicker (son roof tiles or so on), and as it's a really big train (11482 parts fully assembled), it needs more than one magnetic field production unit, so i've re used the tanker and changed the inside here it is: so the engine can produce its own magnetic field for itself and the tender, and for the whole train it needs 3 more production units with their controlers the train counts: the engine, 2 tenders, 1 restaurant coach and 2 travelers coach for now, but why not something like a fret trailer to load 2 steam cars for the richest passenger ;) i'm happy with it, now i'll work on the full train station, and on the mini story coming with it, relating the beginning of the first mag field train, with its creator and so on, but for the station should i move to city or something else ? you can see the lil story comin with this train here http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=82956 Edited May 29, 2013 by Rom1Kno Quote
Rom1Kno Posted June 2, 2013 Author Posted June 2, 2013 20 supporters in 2 days on cuusoo ! hope it'll continue like that :D Quote
THATFATTACO Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 You should brighten up the train a bit but other than that the train is beautiful I need to use ldd to :P so i know your pain Quote
