docpuk Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Hi everyone I am new to technic (other than from childhood) and have just bought the 42009 crane model. Reading around on here I have discovered the world of rc Lego and was hoping you would be able to give me some advice. I can see this has been asked before but the only threads I could find are quite old now. Basically I want to start building rc models. Ideally I would want to to build both trucks and cars but realise I would be limited at first depending on what kit I own. I wanted to ask what people would suggest in terms of getting the correct parts (if remote and motors)? My first thought was the 9398 crawler model as this seems like a good starting point? Is buying full sets the best way forward or should I try and get individual parts? Many thanks Quote
Hrafn Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Welcome! One note on terminology - RC is usually used here to refer to Radio Control; if you're looking for remote control via infrared (IR) systems, people on this forum generally use the term PF (for Power Functions) for that. Lego put out a couple of types of actual radio-controlled vehicles in the early 2000s, but the motors used for those, while powerful, are rare and expensive and a bit hard to work with, and the receiver / battery box units are very large. PF is easier and less expensive to work with, though it doesn't have the range of RC stuff. That digression aside, what are you looking to build, and how large? Other than the 42009, do you have any Technic parts already? Quote
docpuk Posted February 22, 2014 Author Posted February 22, 2014 Thanks for the info! So it's pf that I am looking for. No Lego other than 42009. Build wise - cars and trucks. I'd probably start with trucks as 42009 seems more suited to this. Size wise it would be 42009 size and smaller. Thanks! Quote
MrNumbskull13 Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 I think the 9398 would be a good start. Or you could buy the motors, receiver and controller from Lego. OR you could wait till the new Volvo front loader comes out this summer, it's remote controlled and uses different motors form the 9398. :) Quote
AndroTech Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 I would suggest, that you should start with building Jurgens Ultimate 42009. The best site for buying the needed parts is BrickLink. Enjoy the Ultimate! Quote
UniverseBoy Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 like MrNumbskull13 said, you can buy motors etc from Lego. thing i always do once i made something with PF function is to test it frequently. like steering system and drivingsystem. a good choice is to buy a complete set (like the 4x4 crawler) a advantege is that it has the "Servo moter" wich is good in steering systems Quote
JM1971 Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 The upcoming swingloader has all types of motor I believe. Quote
Lakop Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 HI and welcome to Eurobricks, I would say start small and work on gearing, the different motors and battery packs etc. Then work your way upto bigger models. You're in the right place but can I suggest you look through brickshelf for ideas and techniques. H Quote
