Matti Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Greetings fellow brick-enthusiasts! I've been lurking around this forum for ages, really just sucking up all the fantastic creations, images and letting myself inspire! I've actually never posted my own topic, so it's about time. This tiny project was first and foremost about creating a lego drum kit. The challenge i faced was obviously the size and shape.. I am a drummer myself, so making a balanced drum kit with focus on the detail that drummers around would recognize, was important! But, the tough times occur when you only have so much variety in the bricks as far as round shapes go. I went with the same round 2x2 brick type for both bass-drum, snare, tom and floor-tom. This little piece ended up becoming a self-portrait of myself! Oh, and i hope this is the right place to post this! Hope you enjoy! Quote
eurotrash Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Very nicely done (and photographed). The black wear marks on the snare and tom is a good touch. Paradiddle on and Gene Krupa would be proud Matti! Quote
Artanis I Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Well built. Especially the hardware. Love the stick marks, even though I prefer clear heads except on the snare. Just like every shiny cymbal for sale on eBay, the camera & photographer's reflection are in the photo. Proof of nicely buffed bronze. You are right, it is very limiting with the brick, plate and dish sizes. Just have to pretend everything is 14" except the 21" ride! Shame you can't do 3x3 bass drum, that size would work if the pieces existed. Quote
L@go Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 Looks very nice, and I agree with the others that putting those marks on the skins is a great touch. Isn't the bass drum a tad deep though, compared to its diameter? Quote
rollermonkey Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 Nice. Certainly a step up from the little kit that came with the rock band trio. That uses a 4x4 round for the bass, but only has one tom, the snare, one hat and the ride, and of course, non-chrome cymbals. Quote
sithewok Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 This is very cool. I was a drummer when I was younger and would love to build a mini set like this someday. Nice touch with the wear to the heads. Quote
Matti Posted April 19, 2014 Author Posted April 19, 2014 Cheers folks! The hardest part about the bass-drum was the attached hardware (legs, mount for tom) but for me it was important to bring these feats to the model. And have it attached to the plate of course! Every part is attached, so it can be moved around :) This is an exact copy of my own set in real life, which has hardware mounts on the bass drum. The thing about the toms, cause of the same 2x2 round brick used on every tom, was to make them stand out in depth, so they give a optical illusion of being different in sizing.. It works quite well in my opinion, and actually looks very cool in real life, as it stands here on my desk :) I tried out many different round sizes before i finalized the model, but it just got too big, and looked silly. I might revisit it some day! I am also looking in to making a larger set with double bass drums and loads of cymbals. We need more chrome gold dishes in different sizes!! -Mat Quote
