No, I didn't buy one. My nephew, Mr Thing got one for his fifth birthday so I thought I might as well check it out.

My initial impression was: ITS MUCH WORSE THAN IT LOOKS IN THE PICTURES!!!

What the pictures don't show is how unstable the masts are. Would you believe the main mast attaches to the hull via 2 x 4 studs, opposed to the 4 x 4 studs the masts attach to the real pirate ships. When the mast bass is half its traditional width the mast rocks back and forth clumbsily. I saw Mr Thing attempt to put one of the maxi-figures in the crows nest but he couldn't because it wouldn't stop rocking. He can single handed place a mini-figure on the mast on the real. Woohoo! Go 4+ playability intended for people his age!

Its appalling how easily this set falls apart. The forecastles roof seems to sit upon its walls, and if trying to push the roof down firmly, the wall pieces become dislodged. The major problem with the oversized pieces is they don't connect together very well. Small pieces are definitely required to build structural stability, but no such pieces exist in this set, its just one big piece on top of another and as a result it doesn't stay together very well.

In the hull beneath the forecastle is a storage space but its not really accessible unless the roof of the forecastle is removed. Perhaps this is why the roof is so easily removed, but there's nothing to stop it from being accidentally bumped off. The forecastle also has hatches which do open, but they don't seem to open wide enough to poke anything useful out of.

The maxi-figures. Approximately 200% bigger than traditional mini-figures and their hats can't even be removed. Nor can their heads, or their their legs. Maybe I should be calling them action figures. And as for the cannon... Well I've said they look more like trains - and I still say that.

I've discussed in other threads how I hold great distain for the hull and its finally dawned upon me what it resembles: a tug boat hull!!! These 4+ pirates are sailing round in an over grown tug boat! The sails might be at least passable if used effectively in a MOC, but in this set they only contribute to the overall abomination.

Redbeard's ship also has a crain which looks too futuristic to be on a pirate ship. Maybe if it was brown or black instead of grey and red it wouldn't have this problem. This is not so and the stupid thing looks out of place.

What is salvagable from this set? For a set this size there isn't much, the rope ladders, flag poles, the flags, treasure chest & coins, parrot, barrel, etc... Mostly just small accessories that don't contribute to the actual design of the set.

Overall this is the worse pirate ship LEGO has ever created. I'm wondering if the ship's designers were ordered to get drunk all night then come into work the next day and design the most ridiculous pirate ship possible. How else did they come up with this design? I give it 0.25 stars out of 5 for the pieces I could salvage from it.

What a waste of potential...

I gave it a 2 - still think the hull and masts can be salvaged for MOCs, as well as the accesories you mentioned and some other parts I'd probably use if I had the set. Still a set should be a good model on its own, not only a part pack. If it were called "Pirate part pack" perhaps I'd give it a 3 :D

This is what has always bothered me most about 4+. The ability to make your own characters is a huge part of Lego (I grew up on it) which is being lost ot modern lego builders through movies and 1 piece figs.

i'd give it a 3,5

1) this ship can't be compared with minifig ships; this ship is for juniors, it's all about playing not building mocs for display, like most of us do. Pieces have to be big and simple. Very often, it's even daddy who puts it together and then the child plays with it. therefore, any comparison with the other ships is invalid.

2) i've only seen it at the lego shop in K

4) i can't comment on the problems with the masts, becaue it's not part of my collection, i can't evaluate this. but, in all, it looks pretty solid...

Photographed display models can look as solid as needed. Super glue is a wonderful invention! Go buy one Count Sneffy and write another review. See if your score lowers. I probably would have given it 3 by just looking at the pictures.

I was considering putting zero and 0.5 there as well, but the scale would be unbalanced then.

So instead I put <=1 which means Less Than or Equal to 1 so it represents 1 and below.

But perhaps you're right, I should have put:

0 - Shouldn't even be a set

Too late now though...

You are aware that the masts are a completely different system to the masts of the original pirate theme?

Trash. I looked in the inventory and saw very very few decent pieces. only thing good is that hull and even than the colors make it hard to make something good. (That guy from Port Brique made that beautiful MOC... but thats about the only thing that could be done).

No colors besides Black, Red, and Grey could be used because chances are it would look kind of silly(this isnt for sure... but just from my knowledge(which is pictures and boxes).

Terrible thing. I Dont care if its for juniors. This is unacceptable. Booooooo! (Not the halloween sort either!)

Here's the Peeron inventory

Do as Mr Sting did, look through the pieces.

Here's the mast I speak of, well a different coloured version:

Look at its 2 x 4 base. HALF that of traditional masts. So if you opt to use this mast don't ever expect it to keep still unless you use one hand to secure it at all times.

1) as i indicated earlier, i did check the inventory... Sure, if you want to turn this into a great ship, you'll need lots of extra parts, that's a different story...

2) the use of grey, red and black, you cen even add brown, looks more than enough to me...

3) i'd build a pirate ship for display, not for playing, so i don't care if the mast only has 2 x 4 base. besides, you can always add parts around the base to prevend it from coming loose... be creative... i prefer btw, tan colored masts than black masts. it's supposed to be wood, after all...

4) there's another advantage: the price, only 30$, compared to the other pirate ships, that's bargain! especially based on current prices of pirate ships...

What are you waiting for Count Sneffy? You seem convinced this ship is alright, so go buy one and demonstrate what you think you can achieve with it. I'm curious whether actually being in possession of one will change your opinion of it.

Refer to picture of mast and look at its base - SNOT going to be so easy to add parts to secure that!

don't think so... the base is quite high, try placing two containers like these: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=30150

on both sides of the brick; or you can easily use 1x4 plates and bricks to fix this problem...

if i were to create a moc out of this i probably wouldn't try to build a classic frigate or corvette, but a 19th century freighter or canal ship...

i'll check prices in my local retailers and see what's possible... i was going to buy this tub, but thought i'd wait another year...

The same mast is in the viking ship all though they have acted on your complaint and it has a 4x4 base. Which looks even worse...

What do you mean it looks even worse?

Thicker at both ends, still thin in the middle. It looks like a diverging lens...

You got a picture of this? I need to see it to understand it...

)( connected at the 2 ends and much taller...

Yeah, you can attach those parts to the mast with all new special pieces designed for the specific purpose. But the mast won't fall down, and I never said it would. The mast wobbling back and foward is extremely annoying and what my gripe is about.
