Posted February 6, 201411 yr because solid Axles and suspensions are the biggest problem for beginners i have started on my german homeforum a collection thread for vehicle axles and suspensions, and i think here should exist a thread like this too. feel free to post your own axles and suspensions. please with picture and if possible with an LDD file that it can simple reproduced. here a first bunch of my axles heavyplanet trackwidth is variable planet with difflock planet with difflock and power drivethrough driven and steered independent suspension with 11 studs between towballs, unfortunately no ldd file possible flat and solid axle please post your own axles too Edited November 3, 20159 yr by efferman
February 6, 201411 yr Okay, here are mine: First the small ones: This one is and improved axle used in my mini 41999. Its made for light trucks only: http://www.brickshel...s/miniaxle1.lxf Second there is an axle I actually came up with yesterday in my mini unimog. It features a differential and actual portal gears, making it the smallest lego portal axle: http://www.brickshel...s/miniaxle2.lxf Third axle is made for the small truck wheels and the slightly larger baloon wheels: http://www.brickshel...s/miniaxle3.lxf One of the older, yet still good axles is the one used in raptor: http://www.brickshel.../raptoraxle.lxf Next are the axles used in cheetah. They are very robust and efficient: http://www.brickshel...cheetahaxle.lxf Slowly getting to the big boys... Here's a slightly updated axle used in the monster. Its extremely robust and can carry high torque. http://www.brickshel...monsteraxle.lxf And the latest mother of (half)axles is the one used in the fox. Its the most efficient of the bunch thanks to only two gears used. http://www.brickshel...les/foxaxle.lxf Edited February 6, 201411 yr by Zblj
February 6, 201411 yr Here is a small front axle for a live setup, including drive and steering. Here is a dynamic rear differential independent setup. Here is a portal axle with turntables setup that includes a limited slip differential. Finally, here is a portal axle independent set-up with MacPherson suspension.
February 6, 201411 yr I had a lot of trouble finding plenty of steer and suspension articulation which I think is important, because you can turn in small spaces and there is less of a limit for when the spring bottoms out, and the ride height be can adjusted more this way. until I build the first example I posted. it does have some problems such as bump steer, You just have to stick with it and try and most of the time it will be possible in lego. February 7, 201411 yr Old axles but I hope that helpful for someone... 11 studs between wheels - http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=525233 10 studs between wheels - http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=525561 9 studs without diff - http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=525655 When I had my new pieces I will build new ones .
February 7, 201411 yr Author a new pendular double axle for 19 wide trucks. 19widetwinpendular von efferman auf Flickr ldd file
February 7, 201411 yr Here's a miniature tatra suspesnion: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/zblj/Axles/minitatra8x8.lxf
February 8, 201411 yr @ Dans lego Sheepo made one: http://www.sheepo.es...-live-axle.html If i mention right a 3-link setup with a simple panhard bar, something like the Ford Mustang has. Nicjasno made one aswell, but is a little bit big. I would also like to see some live axles setups like the Ford Mustang has for ideas. Another example: https://www.dropbox....Opel Suspension Edited February 8, 201411 yr by jesse66058
February 8, 201411 yr Here's what I developed for chitty. I will be refining for the GTHO very soon. I made a more reliable version but didnt take any pics, and choose this one because of looks.
February 8, 201411 yr Nice leaf spring set-up there Doc I don't think I've personally designed any axles, tbh it's the bit I struggle with especially for Trial Trucks
February 10, 201411 yr Here's a miniature tatra suspesnion: Zblj, I'm sorry so much, but steering don't want to work :( but rear part is excellent
February 10, 201411 yr Zblj, I'm sorry so much, but steering don't want to work :( but rear part is excellent Steering works, all right, check here:
February 11, 201411 yr How did you manage to make such animation/rotation in LDD? On my version of LDD, I can only animate small/simple mechanisms ...
February 11, 201411 yr I might as well post my dual live rear axle(s) with central diff for "8258-sized-trucks" Using the A-arms like this minimizes sideways swaying LDD file available here

It must use differential at the center of axle and universal joints?
February 11, 201411 yr Maybe something like this, but without portal axles and place a differential in the chassis. I know that you wouldn't get the same performance with a different differential setup, but it's all I've got at the moment.
February 11, 201411 yr This thread is heaven. Thank you to everyone for their posts and another thank you for uploading any LDD files too, it helps WAY more :)!
February 11, 201411 yr Hi, This is one of my test axles ;) (I've not not tested it in car yet :)) (the red pieces are connected into the holes in the PF-Servo, and yellow links are connected to yellow towballs) Photo: LDD: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/Gzzig/Axles-LDDs/live_axle_try_1_no_portals_gray.lxf (hope it works) Edited February 11, 201411 yr by Gzzig
February 11, 201411 yr question; not only for you Michael, but for all of you respected builders - do you know how to make steered driver independent suspension axle that has differential but is more narrow than 18 studs? It must use differential at the center of axle and universal joints? Small detail perhaps but nonetheless. With the new differentials and symmetric constructions (drive-shaft in the middle), widths can be only odd numbers, I.e., 17 or 19 ... But not 18.
February 11, 201411 yr Small detail perhaps but nonetheless. With the new differentials and symmetric constructions (drive-shaft in the middle), widths can be only odd numbers, I.e., 17 or 19 ... But not 18. If you start by sandwiching a 3L differential between two thin liftarms, you can build an even-width suspension module.
February 11, 201411 yr If you start by sandwiching a 3L differential between two thin liftarms, you can build an even-width suspension module. But thats really prone to slipping and its very messy and weak.
February 11, 201411 yr But thats really prone to slipping and its very messy and weak. That's what I thought, too, until Saberwing40k posted this design, which I've built and found quite strong (other than some flex in the wishbones):
