Governor Mister Phes Posted April 22, 2005 Governor Posted April 22, 2005 When I was young laddie I always went to my granny's place during the school break the week before Christmas - mummy and daddy were working all day you see so granny kept an eye on me. But Granny had bought things for my amusement - small town and space sets. They were very entertaining but I never felt compelled to own my own LEGO. A few years later I was in K Mart... I'm not sure why I was in the LEGO section because I was more interested in Transformers and Monster In My Pocket. But somehow I'd stumbled it, and this is what caught my attention... 6235 Buried Treasure Such a simple set! Yet the little man holding the shovel next to a treasure chest with a monkey hanging off it was so inspiring. I was instantly hooked! It was only $3.00 so I bought it right there and then. Well actually I had to go to the checkout first... But that started an obsession... :-D Quote
xwingyoda Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 My Lego love story went like that. When I was a little kid, I loved toys to play in the bath tub and my parents decided to buy my first Lego set (don't ask me which one, I don't remember). I guess I loved it so much that they continued to buy sets. This became a real habit and I wouldn't want any other toys. I loved the classic city, castle and space themes and had quite an impressive collection. Then I started to enjoy video games at the same time. One holiday, I went to a summer camp in the US and at my return, my parents gave ALL my precious bricks away :'( After a while I got over it and my habit and passion for Lego went into oblivion. Suddenly appeared the SW theme in 1999. I did not move at that time. I think I really got back into it big time 2/3 years ago. And the story repeats itself once more, the habit became a real passion again ;) Quote
Wolf04 Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 I didn't become interested, I was drawn in by my parents. In 1994 (when I was 5), I got my first LEGO town vehicles and before this I never knew LEGO existed and from then on, all I got for holidays was LEGO. I didn't really ask for them, but somehow received them. It wasn't until 1998, when I came to Canada and my parents had a lot more money is when I got interested in LEGO but the dream was short-lived (until 2004, the official year I just stopped buying LEGO). Governor Mister Phes Posted April 22, 2005 Author Governor Posted April 22, 2005 Apart from the obvious reason, why was 2004 the year you stopped buying LEGO Mr Wolf? Quote

Wolf04 Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Apart from the obvious reason, why was 2004 the year you stopped buying LEGO Mr Wolf? I tried to buy LEGO for as long as possible but my parents said I was too old and they stopped giving me LEGO as gifts. Of course, I continued to buy LEGO with my own money but at one point, I just couldn't spend my money on LEGO. I needed to upgrade my computer, I wanted a really nice sound system in my room and so on. I still have my LEGO city in the basement but I keep on forgeting to take some pictures of it. Quote
ApophisV Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 I have no idea when my obsession started, the first situation I can think of was at the age of 4 when my step brother gave me his whole collection (dunno why... *wacko*). Oh, and before I was three I build a house with my dad. He asked my mom to buy more slopes, but she bought 33'er and not the 45 Quote
Darth_Ewok Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 I've been obsessed as long as I can remeber... Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted April 23, 2005 Author Governor Posted April 23, 2005 So you have been obsessed for all time heh? Well all your time anyway... Quote

Ras 74 Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 I must answer the same as Darth_Ewok. I cant remember when my interest for LEGO started. It has always been there. My first set was this baby: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=841980 It Quote

ImperialJohn Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 Old - Who is old :^D I'm quite sure this was not my first LEGO set - But this is what I remember. Got this one (and a motor) for christmas: Soon the windmill blades where running with help from the motor :D After that I remember the christmas where this where released I got the WHOLE fireseries that christmas :oD But of cause my AFOL life started with StarWars as for so many others *wub* Quote
snefroe Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 my lego career is very much the same as all the others... i got my first lego sets in 78 or 79 from my parents on my birthday. the oldest one i can remember is the police boat of 1976. the next couple of years were very important lego years. the collection of sets i had was almost complete, but at around 1984 it was all over... I still wanted lego, i just couldn't convince my parents to buy the stuff any more :P and so i lost grip on lego... i believe i bought lego until 1989. i remember the pirates, but the only thing i actually bought was Mister phes' "Buried treasure #6235". i still kept collecting the catalogues but that's it... until the star wars line of 1999. first thing i bought after my Dark Age was the snowspeeder... since then i've been able to buy quite a lot of the "Dark Age sets", thank god... xwingyoda Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 For mine just go read the staff page :-D ;) That's an impressive story there Lord Vader :-D :P Quote
Vader Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 Indeed it is, im thinking of turning it into a book. Hopefully ill get a best seller out of it :-D ;) Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted April 23, 2005 Author Governor Posted April 23, 2005 Unlike many here the Star Wars theme didn't have any impact on me whatsoever... In 2002 I discovered eBay and one day I curiously serached for "Pirate Lego" and sure enough it was there. After many months of teasing myself I finally succumbed a bought a set that I didn't even recognise since it was released years after I entered the dreaded Dark Age. But it continued from there I kept buying and buying more and more until now, I've reached the point where there is only 5 or 6 Pirate sets I don't have. However back in the early 90's I remember being fascinated by Castle, Space and Town sets and probably would have wanted them all had funds permitted. Unfortunately funds didn't permit so I stuck with my favourite although I managed to get some town and space sets for presents. Quote
xwingyoda Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 Indeed it is, im thinking of turning it into a book. Hopefully ill get a best seller out of it :-D ;) And then sale the rights to a big movie studio ;) We need a movie out of this fantastic story :-D :P Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted April 23, 2005 Author Governor Posted April 23, 2005 There hasn't actually been a LEGO movie before has there? And those Bioncile movies don't count... Quote
