Norro Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 I was browsing through JoJo's BS gallery (a castle builder of wide fame) when I noticed for the first time this section of custom pirates. I don't think this has been posted here yet, so I decided to see what you all thought... God Bless, Nathan Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted September 29, 2006 Governor Posted September 29, 2006 Uhhhh... Who is JoJo? You refer to this person as though you know them but you've just discovered something new about them. Quote
Norro Posted September 29, 2006 Author Posted September 29, 2006 Uhhhh... Who is JoJo? You refer to this person as though you know them but you've just discovered something new about them. He is a castle builder (mostly) who has been around for ages on Lugnet and more lately CC. His MOCs range from the simple: (pic=link to gallery) To the large: (pic=link to gallery) and are all known for detail: and clever, realistic touches: His Brickshelf Gallery. Overkill I know, but if you look around you'll see why he is one of the best MOCers online... I mean that: is just ingenious! Nathan Quote
EXO-CHAMP Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 He also made this very nice ship: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=51047 Quote

SirScottLego Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 I have always been a big fan and I have his work bookmarked. His custom minifigs have much to be desired but I think they were very progressive for doing them without the aid of the computer and by hand. I think it speaks volumes of the imagination and creativity in his head. Quote
Captain Roger Posted September 29, 2006 Posted September 29, 2006 Jojo's minifigs are really ugly! Quote
Brick Miner Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 im not a fan... but then again, im all for replicating the official LEGO look. which i don't think his MOCs or his custom figs do. and his BSB is barely a MOC. i've never prefered the what i call "classic-castle" style of building though. - BrickMiner Quote

Give that this is a pirate forum how about we focus more towards his piratical endevaours, like old Hook for example... Quote
Norro Posted September 30, 2006 Author Posted September 30, 2006 Jojo's minifigs are really ugly! I think if you read the gallery they were done when he was 12... There wern't many customs around then, or torso sticker printers... I actually quite like this lad: God Bless, Nathan Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted September 30, 2006 Governor Posted September 30, 2006 I think JoJo's mini-figures are fine, obviously they wouldn't pass as official LEGO mini-figures but he certainly has developed an interesting style which also incorporates fabric for the Pirate's attire. However, what I think lets them down is the shocking image quality! Its like they've been taken with a webcam or something. How old is JoJo now? Or how long ago did he create this custom mini-figures? Quote
Norro Posted September 30, 2006 Author Posted September 30, 2006 How old is JoJo now? Or how long ago did he create this custom mini-figures? He says they're from when he was 12. According to his CC profile he was born in '77 so these were probably scanned images ; ) God Bless, Nathan Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted October 1, 2006 Governor Posted October 1, 2006 Well lets do the math... If he was born in 1977 that would make him 28 or 29 now. So lets say 29 for convenience sake. So now its 29-12 = 17. So these images are 17 years old, taking us back to 1989 which means he must have made these mini-figures when the Pirate theme had just been released! It would be good to get JoJo in here so we can get him to confirm this? Does he post at Classic Castle? Quote
Norro Posted October 1, 2006 Author Posted October 1, 2006 Does he post at Classic Castle? He hasn't been around for a while...a german speaker could go ask on 1000steine... God Bless, Nathan Quote
Brick Miner Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 I think if you read the gallery they were done when he was 12andhe must have made these mini-figures when the Pirate theme had just been released! if this is true, i definitely have respect :'-) doesn't mean i like them... but then again, i don't like much artwork done by 12 year olds... they just have maturing to do. i don't like my artwork for when i was 12 either :-D however, the next question is... where is his current work ??? if he was mini customizing at 12, i'd love to see his pirates NOW !!! as an artist, its always nice to progression. i mean, 17 years of customizing experience !!! maybe he lost interest ??? - BrickMiner Quote
SirScottLego Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 All the more respect if he were 12... Quote

I suppose we have that to thank for all the detail he gets out of actual pieces... God Bless, Nathan Quote
Berry Syedow Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 I think JoJo's mini-figures are fine, obviously they wouldn't pass as official LEGO mini-figures but he certainly has developed an interesting style which also incorporates fabric for the Pirate's attire. Surprisingly, Jojo, stated that he only used paper for all of his custom mini-fig outfits (ninth post down):http://www.classic-castle.com/forum/viewto...ear+customizing It's difficult to tell, but if you study the some of the protruding vests, they don't appear as 3-D than from afar. One wonders if he used any type of special paper for his customizations... Quote
Brick Miner Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 If you dig around on CC for the is customizing wrong thread, you'll find he swore off it...wish i had time to go browsing a "foreign site"... :-D I suppose we have that to thank for all the detail he gets out of actual pieces...hmmm... i wish i knew the real reason.obviously he has no interest in replicating an official LEGO building style... customization is essential ;-) - BrickMiner Quote
Jojo Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 Hello! Thanks, Nathan, for the hint. OK.... Those customized Pirate figures were done between 1988 (this fellow Bertrand d'Orgeron ) and 1996, when the first brown and dark grey minifig parts were available. I used mostly paper (coloured pencils, outlines with fine ink pen) and some cloth for the bandannas. When I did these figures I didn't aim to resemble the look of official Lego figures, but I rather wanted them to have Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted October 19, 2006 Governor Posted October 19, 2006 Jojo! It is wonderful to have you at our forum, you are a custom mini-figure designer ahead of your time! Too bad you don't want to take pictures of the mini-figures, but there comes a point where we must decide the project is finished and it is time to move on. Jojo, since you still have the mini-figures what are you doing them? Are they on display or do you keep them in storage? Quote
oo7 Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 If you are able to read German you may have a look at my webpage about these custom figs:http://www.chutspe.de/steinwerk/Piraten.html I can't read German, but I see some of those names are from Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island and some from real life. Are all of the names (and corresponding stories) ones of literature, pop-culture, and history or are some your own? Quote
Norro Posted October 21, 2006 Author Posted October 21, 2006 Hello! Thanks, Nathan, for the hint. Jojo Hey JoJo, Welcome to EB! Nice of you to drop by (even if 'blackmailed by old pictures you thought lost X-D ). God Bless, Nathan Quote

You are right, most of these names come from pirate novels like Treasure Island (which, by the way, I knew almost by heart back than, in German translation of course). Some of the names and actual figures are directly inspired by Lego, though: This fellow is Captain Baddog from Lego's own Pirate Comic "The Golden Medaillon" http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6255 I don't know, though, if the names are the same in the English version. This fellow, Ebenezer McBlack, is also from aforesaid comic, I just invented the first name: The corresponding stories on my homepage are mostly fiction. Bye Jojo Quote
