Frankie1970 Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 (edited) Dear all, after one year (with breaks) I finished my 3rd Crocodile, an austrian ÖBB 1189. There was only one machine colored in red in the 1970's. The large wheels are from 2 Emeralds. The locomotive has 2 PF-motors in the front and IR and akku in the middle. On a switch point you can see, why this loco called "crocodile" :-) More pictures and a video you can see here. Now the familiy are completed :-) I hope you like this MOC... LEGO Guy Bri Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Whoa, THESE are awesome!! Great use of the E.N. wheels. Great detail! Love the green one (fav. color). Thumbs WAY UP! Quote
lightningtiger Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Excellent train 'Frankie1970', great PF job and nice the way it handles curves. Brick On ! Quote
AussieJimbo Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Fantastic locomotive. Great work, Frankie. :classic: Quote
roamingstop Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 (edited) Last year I built a Swiss EE 3/3 Loco - which has exactly the same driving wheel configurations as used on the crocodiles, and I really like your solution. I guess the main axles are powered rather than the driving ring (pulley). I had tried a variety of tricks to make the pulley the primary drive train, but found there was too much flex in the bars... what are your thoughts? Do I see some BB wheels in there? And how did you manage to set the pulley wheel logically with the right offset to the main wheels? On the whole is definitely the way the model should be done as a future AFOL release And it gives me a bit more confidence to reuse the EN wheels for the remake of the EE 3/3 (currently I use BB middle wheels). Frankie1970 Posted February 12, 2011 Author Posted February 12, 2011 (edited) You are right, the pulley as primery drive is not strong enough, so the pulley and the middle main axle are connected to the PF-motor. The first drive axle can't, because there is no space, the motor sitting over there. But that's no problem, the first and the 3rd main axle are connected through the connecting rod. On the 1189 is no need for an offset between pulley and main wheels, the axles are in the same line. But the SBB Ce 6/8 III has a similar construction like the EE 3/3. The axel of the pulley are one plate higher than the axles of the main wheels. The middle main axle is connected to the PF-motor, the rest is connected through the connection rods: The wheels of the 1089 are from the Emerald, but the large BBB wheels are also good enough, see my other crocodiles. Thank's for your compliments. Edited February 12, 2011 by Frankie1970 Quote

roamingstop Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 I added some links to the EE-33 prototype wheels (EN) I had generated - some which worked and some which did not. The last one was quite stable and could pull 3-4 EN carriages, but securing the motor down proved hard... and I was not convinced a 9+ wide wheel set would be good. In the end I went for medium sized BB wheels - and used a blank instead of the pulley (BB wheels have a different connecting rod offset) - which made the size of the base slightly smaller... I had felt that EN was too large. But I think looking at your crocodiles, and knowing I will be migrating most of my models to 8 wide... it makes sense. Two videos (no idea if they work online) can be found on the links below. You can see the problem of the lack of driving bands around BB wheels (i.e. slip) Video1.ogg Video2.ogg Thanks for re-firing up the project to finish this model off. Quote
Toastie Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Dear all, after one year (with breaks) I finished my 3rd Crocodile, an austrian ÖBB 1189. ... I hope you like this MOC... Hi Frankie, this is a train that just knocks me off my chair. It is incredible. You know, there is a lot of excitement regarding TLC's new Maersk train (and that thing is worth all the action) - BUT: People should FREAK OUT on your 1189 crocodile. Simply amazing. I really think this train is in one line with Ben's BR23, Teddies BR01, and other fantastic models that don't come to mind while typing this. One day I am going to get my own crocodile: I guess 1189 it will be. All the best, Thorsten Quote
dr_spock Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Excellent loco. You did a great job. Quote
MXLPT Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 The last picture with the 3 together. Oh how beautiful trains! The Brown one i totally adore! Quote
vgsprites Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Wow what beautiful Locos! I like the green one too in the last picture cause it's my favorite color also. Plus I like the gray wheels in it too. The PF engineering in the red one is marvelous. Congrats on completing your Crocodile collection! Quote

LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 I love the perfect design of this electric loco The red colour is what I like the most because remember me the lego set 10183. I really appreciate such great complexity in traction mechanism ...very well realized! Quote
