Musikfreak Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 How might the friction compare to the 8880 or 8865? Unfortunately I do not own the mighty 8880 but compared to 8865 it's less friction. The whole drivetrain runs really smoothly (I always pay extra attention to make sure that every single axle moves freely, so keep that in mind). I was really surprised about that. But with 8865 it could also be the big engine that is the bottleneck. On the other hand I think even the 8868 has more friction in the rather simple drivetrain just because of the long axle to the front and the rubberband. By now the Unimog is finished and it's a great model. The detail on the cabin is really nice. Maybe if I have time I will do some side by side shots with it's grandfather 8868 and/or 8854 (which I always loved for it's design). Quote
tripletschiee Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 (edited) How might the friction compare to the 8880 or 8865? I agree with Musikfreak. The friction is less to both mentioned models! If you turn the center differential on the Unimog, you need hardly any force. All 4 wheels turn right away. If I do this on the 8880 or 8865 (both models are standing on my shelf) I definitly need much more force, even If I set the gearboxes to neutral. T_Tank Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 How hard you think it would be to make the model (with the exception of the pneumatic controls) fully remote controled? I was thinking when I eventually get one of these adding a lego RC motor to drive it maybe change the guts out for the pto system to actually run off the drive line an going a little bit further with a automatic pto that runs the pump so when it reaches a certain pressure it would move the shift ring to the neutral position. Probably over thinking that <,< though if using the RC system to drive it an then using PF's to run all the extra controls....hmmm.... more ideas in my head >.< Quote
mind storm Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 I really like and want this set, but I haven got any money. I f..k it. Quote
Final Exit Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 Does anyone know of the official release date here in the UK? I'm desperate. Quote

Anio Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Hi, I finished the review of the Unimog 8110. I gave as much explanations as possible. Actually, I had much things to say. :) If you want to read it : http://www.setechnic.com/review-lego-technic-8110.html (you may use the translator) Quote
zap2012 Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 has any body seen a unimog stateside yet? I'm also interested in the answer to this. I'm going to be at the LEGO store in Minneapolis in just under three weeks, and I'd LOVE to pick this up then. Anyone know what the US release date is? Quote
Paul Boratko Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 I'm also interested in the answer to this. I'm going to be at the LEGO store in Minneapolis in just under three weeks, and I'd LOVE to pick this up then. Anyone know what the US release date is? I would imagine that the other 2 Technic Summer sets would be released first...? Or maybe not... Heck, I haven't even seen the 8081 extreme cruiser in stores yet... I know last year the Motorbike, Container Truck, and mobile crane got released on July 14th at Toys R Us... Like I posted earlier, you can order all of the Parts for the Unimog from Lego Direct on July 2nd, so I simply can't imagine the release date being too far off... Quote

I was at a lego Store in the Seattle area today. I asked when the release date was....... They told me it was set to be released in Europe in August and they were not even 100% sure if it would even be released in the USA after that at all........ Essentially they had no idea. I hope the guy I talked to was just misinformed. Quote
tripletschiee Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 I finished mine yesterday evening. It is great! It is huge! It is heavy! It works fine, but... ... the steering is pretty hard. I think a gear reduction would make sense. ... the suspension is pretty stiff/hard, if you push downwards. But it is very sensititv, when luffing the Mog sidewise. But a stiff suspension means also a capability of heavy equipment. I already added an Airtank. It definitly improves the performance of the pneumatic system. The position of the airtank is not perfect, but good enough to prove concept. My Flicr Regards, Gerhard Quote
JunkstyleGio Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 @ Anio: Thanks for the extensive review! Hopefully you will place building instructions and some pictures of the snowplough soon! Quote
BrickWild Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Any ideas on when it'll be released in Australia? Quote
JunkstyleGio Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 (edited) @ Brickwild: Somewhere in october...... (That's what I saw on a movie on you-tube) Edited July 1, 2011 by JunkstyleGio Quote
BrickWild Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Thanks! If my dad ordered it on eBay or Bricklink, then I would get this on my 21st! Quote
Erik Leppen Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Thanks for the extensive review Anio. Not only are your reviews very informative, but I also use them as a way to practice my French a bit Quote
Anio Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 I also use them as a way to practice my French a bit Well. I'm glad you like it is written in French. But IMO, if all my reviews were in English, it would be much more useful. Cause much more people were able to read them. I hope the translator does a good job. At least something understandable. DLuders Posted July 2, 2011 Posted July 2, 2011 I followed Paul Boratko's advice, and telephoned Lego Direct (Customer Service) to order some of the 8110 Unimog's new parts (pictured below). I could order up to 10 different part numbers over the telephone. On his Brickshelf gallery, cooooooool posted the two Parts List pages (from the 8110's official instructions), and concentrated on these NEW parts (most of which I just ordered): To order from Lego Direct, mention the long code numbers from the instructions (reprinted in parentheses below). Here are the prices in the USA (already noted by Paul Boratko): New Technic Shock Absorbers (4619319) = $1.91 ea. New Hub piece (4610378) = $1.04 ea. New Portal Axle housing (4610377) = $2.08 ea. New 94.3 x 38R tires (4610381) = $4.54 ea. New C-shaped pivot frame (4610379) = $2.25 ea. New cup to fit on above pivot (4610380) = $1.02 ea. On Bricklink, I ordered BLACK 44772 "Wheel 56mm D. x 34mm Technic Racing Medium" (to match the real Unimog's wheel color), since Lego Direct only had Light Bluish Gray wheels (4211845 @ $2.50 ea.). I plan on fiddling with these new parts while I'm waiting for the ~August 2nd US release date for the 8110 set. I didn't inquire about the ORANGE parts, but I'm sure there are plenty available.... I didn't inquire about the ORANGE parts, but I'm sure there are plenty available.... Cool! I didn't realize the release date was August 2nd. That means I can buy this set while I'm at Brickfair! Parts from Lego Direct can also be ordered through the Lego website, but it may take a week or so for somebody to email back a response. That's the method I've always used when ordering parts through Lego Direct. Quote
JunkstyleGio Posted July 2, 2011 Posted July 2, 2011 Taken from the 8110 review thread: Very bad news : it seems the 8110 has been withdrawn from the Lego stores (basically the only place where it is possible to get the set at the moment). According to the Lego employees, a pneumatic part would have some problems. Since the classic cylinder, the small cylinder and the switch are used for many years, I think these parts are ok. So, the problem could come from the new compressor (keep in mind it is not the same as the one we used to know in 8049 and 8868). And this make sense since it is the compressor (and especially its join) which is constrained when the pressure is too high. The join has to leak, to let the air go. And that may damage the join, and so the compressor. The delay caused by this problem on one of the pneumatic parts could be a good opportunity to fix the problem on the front panhard rod (if it turns out that this panhard rod has indeed a problem). We should learn more about all of this in the next days... The model is gone from Amazon. Impossible to pre-order it anymore. edit : it depends on which Amazon website we look at, actually. I think the best solution is to wait few days. edit : Maybe a moderator should move the few last posts about the "problems" in the "official thread of the unimog U400", instead of this "review" thread. Remove the pins, compress suspension at the maximum, and steer : the tire rubs a lot against the chassis. The wheel can not even rotate anymore. Conclusion : it is not advised to remove the pins.
