I thought a topic like this could be very interesting. I did a quick search, and I couldn't find anything significantly like this, but if I missed something, feel free to merge this. :classic:

How do you pronounce Lego terms?

For AFOL: Do you say Ay-foll. Ay-Eff-Oh-El?

For MOC: Mock or Emm-Oh-See?

There is a lot of Lego-words out there, how do you say them? :dwacko:

Also, one thing I've never worked out how to pronounce is 'vignette'. There's something about it I just... can't work out :look:

Actually, there has been a topic like this: clik me , which lasted form July '07 to June '11.

However, when I talk about AFOL, and MOC, my pronounciations are:

Affle (like apple  ) and "Mock".

I use the first pronunciation for each. As for vignette, it sounds something like "vin-yet." Mostly.

I thought you were going to ask how to pronounce LEGO. Well, seriously... I live in the Midwest US, and people say Lay-go (while I say leh-go). I'm sure this varies as well by region/accent!

I did see that, but I only read the 2007 date, so I thought I shouldn't bump it. Also, this topic can be about more than just AFOL and MOC.

I say Leh-go myself, but I have heard people pronouncing it Lay-go and Lah-go. I suppose anything except Legos is fine.

AFOL -Aye Foll

MOC - Mock

Lego - Leg Oh

CFOL - See Foll

Me too, I find them easier to say if I make them into an actual sounding word. Wrong or right that's how I like to do it, except for TLG, I stroll just always read that out, as The LEGO Group.

CFOL - See Foll

I've never said CFOL or KFOL. I just stick with 'a kid who likes Lego', usually.

For TFOL I constantly switch between Tee-Eff-Oh-Ell and Tee-foll. It deeds on the context, I suppose.

For AFOL I just say the letters anything else sounds unflattering as something one might call someone who cuts you off on the freeway.

For MOC I usually say mock.

For LEGO I think what I say usually may sound like Lay Go

I normally just read out the letters for AFOL: "Ay Eff Oh Ell". Same goes for KFOL, TFOL, or any other acronym similarly derived.

For MOC, I use "Em Oh Cee" and "Mock" interchangeably, sometimes depending on context. I used to exclusively use "Em Oh Cee", but in that case you run into the issue when typing of whether to type an MOC (an em-oh-cee) or a MOC (a mock). Since back on BZPower people tended to prefer "mock" as the pronunciation (and thus "a MOC" as the written form), I've sort of shifted towards using that pronunciation sometimes myself, particularly when among other AFOLs.

For the brand name LEGO it's always been "leh-go" to me. I've gotten more used to hearing "lay-go" due to many recent videos online featuring actual LEGO designers, many of whom pronounce it more like "lay-go" (at least to an American ear). Back in the day it bothered me as much as when people would call the Nintendo character Mario "may-ree-oh" rather than "mah-ree-oh", but nowadays I'm more open to alternate pronunciations.

In the case of Ninjago, I use "Ninja Go" and "nin-JAH-go" interchangeably, because both seem to be official in some respects. "Ninja Go" is actually exclaimed during Spinjitzu gameplay (at least if you follow the rulebooks, which I don't) and in the TV series, so it's hard to get out of the habit of calling the theme that. On the other hand, "nin-JAH-go" seems to be more official as the name for both the theme and the land in which it takes place, so although I started out calling it just "Ninja Go", I now occasionally try to pronounce it more correctly.

(Incidentally, the two pronunciations sort of highlight the two meanings of the theme name-- it can either mean "Ninja Go" as a battle cry, or it can be a portmanteau of Ninja and LEGO.)

And of course, BIONICLE is full of names with weird pronunciations. Most that have been in the movies I pronounce according to how they were spoken in dialogue. So for instance, I pronounce Lewa "Lee-wah" rather than "Lay-wah", the latter of which is probably more official, and I pronounce Jaller as "Jah-luh", which in this case is the official pronuncation. Others I just tend to pronounce intuitively. Names with double letters, I tend to mentally separate, so Kiina to me is "Kee-EE-nuh". But ironically I tend to pronounce my own name-- which originates from one of my twin brother's attempts at a fan-story in 2005-- "Ahn-keer" rather than "Uh-ahn-keer", just because I would tend to stumble over the double letter when asked in person how the name was pronounced, greatly embarrassing myself.

Of course! I hadn't thought about Ninjago or Bionicle.

I used to say Ninja-go, but now I say Nin-Jah-go. Probably because that's how they say it on TV advertisements.

I only have one Bionicle, Dekar, and I say Deh-car. I'd be interested to see how some Bionicle fans pronounce things. :classic:

In the case of Dekar, I pronounce his name "Day-Car". It just comes off my tongue a lot more naturally than Deh-car would.

Another Ninjago example: I pronouced the character Nya's name as "Nye-uh", but according to the cartoon series it's "Nee-uh". So I'm trying to get used to pronouncing it correctly, though I've had difficulty.

AFOL - ay-eff-oh-ell because the shortened "awful" sounds terrible.

MOC - "mock," because... it doesn't sound terrible.

vignette - "vin-yet."

LEGO - leh-go.

I used to say Ninja-go, but now I say Nin-Jah-go. Probably because that's how they say it on TV advertisements.

Me too, but I always thought "Ninja GOOOOOOO!" was great.

LEGO: Something between Leh-Go and Lay-Go.

AFOL: AFF-full. Awful does sound awful.

MOC: Mock.

Vignette: Vig (rhymes with Big) -Net. Vig-Net.

Ninjago: I did not realize it was like Ninja-Go, so I always pronounced it Nin-JAY-Go.

KFOL: Kh-Foll.

Edit to add this:

Reading the discussion, it shows I've been mispronouncing Vignette. It's one of many words I've learned by reading. I seldom look up a word unless I don't know its meaning.

Technic: Tek-Nik.

WIP: Whip, like in Whip it up.

Bionicle: bi-ON-ik-ul.

CUUSOO: Koo-Soo.

Decal: Dee-Kal

I'll throw in a few non-LEGO acronyms:

html: Hit-mull.

WWW: Dub-Dub-Dub.

Http: Hit-tip. Say that fast. Add an S for https.

I'll use the edit function when I have more.

And when we're not figuring out how to pronounce LEGO terms, we rely on expert guidance from reliable sources, like this.

Scoot-n-froody.

*feels smarter already*

No, this isn't an excuse to start trolling this topic with videos, but this one was actually relevant.

This thread is worth reviving.

I've got some new ideas, how do you say:

CUUSOO

WIP

Decal?

I pronounce them "Coo-soh" and "Work In Progress". Sometimes I just sound out the letters (double-you, eye, pea), but most of the time I just read the acronym WIP as the words it stands for.

Usually I say Coo-soo, but quickly. As for WIP, normally 'Work in Progress', but sometimes 'Whip'.

I'm not sure about Decal, which is why I asked. Day-kal, Deh-kal, Dekkle? :sceptic:

For me, all pronounciations depend on what either makes sense or is audibly pleasing. Since I don't know and 'a-fols' in real life, i'm talking about the sound it makes in my head!

Vignette is vin-nyet but what about Bignette? I say big-net out of habit but it sounds horrible so i'd use bin-yet out loud

Posted

AFOL: with an "a" like in "apple" or "staff" (though i miht try to change it to ay-fol to adapt to the mainstream)

MOC: mock

LEGO: mostly leh-go, but sometimes lay-go,

vignette/bignette: vinyet/binyet

WIP: whip

CUUSOO: coo-soh

decal: dee-kal (I think that's the standard pronounciation)

I don't spell out the letters or say the whole phrase, since these acronyms are easily pronounceable as a word, and it takes less time to pronounce them as such. TLG is an exception, which i spell out, as "tlg" doesn't roll off the tongue as easily.

I only just heard the other day that technic is not just a bastardized spelling of technique, it's pronounced "tech-nick."

Who knew?

Probably everyone but me.
