bionicle factory Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 (edited) Disney Acquires Sony's Merchandising Participation For The Amazing Spider-Man While there's still no cinematic connection between the Disney-owned Marvel Studios, and Spider-Man's home at Sony, the CEO has revealed a recent marketing transaction. Discussing Q4 2011 results, the CEO of Walt Disney, Robert A. Iger, revealed a small recent marketing transaction with Sony Pictures, who of course houses Spider-Man and his much-anticipated reboot; The Amazing Spider-Man. Evidently, there's still no cinematic connection with Disney's Marvel Studios, but could this be a step closer? Anyhow, check out the excerpt below, via Seeking Alpha, while the CEO also elaborates on the current and future success of Marvel Studios. "Marvel's Thor and Captain America were among the top 10 non-sequel releases of the year and we are pleased with the performance of both films and the true benefits of our Marvel acquisition should be quite visible in 2012. First, in May, Thor and Captain America will join Iron Man, The Hulk and Black Widow in Marvel's The Avengers, the first Marvel film to be marketed and distributed by Disney. The Avengers shows great promise with a record 10 million downloads on iTunes when the trailer debuted, and it is well on its way to being our next great franchise. Then in July, Sony Pictures will release The Amazing Spiderman. We're excited about the film and expect it will drive significant benefits for Spiderman consumer products." Division is expected to benefit next year from the release of "The Avengers" and Sony's "The Amazing Spider-Man." Disney recently brokered a new deal with the studio that enables the Mouse House to collect most of the coin from Spider-Man movie products. "To that end, we recently completed a transaction with Sony Pictures to simplify our relationship. And then in the deal, we purchased Sony Pictures' participation in Spiderman merchandising, while at the same time, Sony Pictures purchased from us our participation in Spiderman films. This transaction will allow us to control and fully benefit from all Spiderman merchandising activity, while Sony will continue to produce and distribute Spiderman films. We won't be specific about the economics of this 2-way transaction, but we expect it will drive attractive returns for Disney." Walt Disney reps have stated in the past that they're "just fine" leaving Spidey's franchise over at Sony Pictures, especially with The Amazing Spider-Man releasing next year. Of course, today's transaction further indicates they have no plans to spend wads of cash for Spidey to have a place in Marvel's ever-growing cinematic universe. What do you think? I'm not sure what this means, but I think Micky got the copyright for Spidey toys, which means there could be Spidey lego. Rocketbilly Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 From what I read somewhere, Megabloks have the Spider Man license? I know it's a bit odd, what with LEGO having the license for Marvel in general, but I'm sure I read somewhere that Megbloks had a right to produce Spiderman sets - in fact, I saw some Spider Man sets demonstrated by a Megabloks representative at one of the toy fairs, or maybe San Diego Comic Con - these sets were upcoming, as well as Iron Man and I believe Captain America, too. Odd. Quote
willybob Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 From the official press statement from July 2011 : ...The LEGO X-Men collection includes minifigure comic versions of Wolverine, Magneto, Nick Fury and Deadpool, while the LEGO Spider-Man sets offer minifigure comic versions of Spider-Man, and Doctor Octopus... Blondie-Wan Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 I thought that Spider-Man Lego was allready confirmed... It is, but that's for sets based on the comics (and/or the character mythos in general), not the movies specifically. The LEGO line as announced covers the Marvel comics universe in general - that is, sets based on the characters and stories told in the comics - as well as next year's Avengers movie (and presumably the other movies that tie into it, like the Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, etc. movies we've been getting so far), since Marvel owns and controls those movies. Certain other movies based on Marvel properties - for example, 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four and X-Men movies, and Sony's Spider-Man movies - are based on deals signed with Marvel before Marvel decided to actively produce and control its own adaptations of its various properties. You might remember that back in 2004, LEGO was making its own Spider-Man sets based on the two movies that then existed in the live-action movie series, while at the same time Mega Bloks was making its own sets based on the original comics. Odd. Licensing is a funny old world, too often people talk of "THE" spiderman license or whatever as if there were a singular thing. Every license contract is different and the terms will vary in a multitude of ways. Unless Megabloks have an exclusive license to produce all building toys then there will always be room for others. It may be in terms of comic things instead of a TV show, or it may be the license Megabloks has doesn't guarantee them exclusivity. Quote
1980-Something-Space-Guy Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 I think that we would all be better off if Lego released Spider-Man sets based on comics and not this new movie. I have ranted many times about this before, but that new costume sucks . Besides, there's much more to Spidey's comic universe than can fit in movies. Quote

Blondie-Wan Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Only because they had the Sony license. :P -Omi Er... yes, that was my point. Sony had (and still has) the movie rights for Spider-Man, and so was handling the licensing for products based upon those movies; Marvel retained the other, non-movie-specific rights, and thus handled the licensing for products based upon the original comics incarnation. Different toy companies got the construction toy rights for the respective iterations of the properties. That's exactly what I was talking about. Now, the new deal discussed in the original post would appear to put a new wrinkle on things. Although Sony is still the studio making Spider-Man movies, Disney is apparently handling the licensing for the movies now (and of course is also Marvel's parent company, as well). Mind you, that doesn't necessarily mean we couldn't have different companies making movie-based and comics-based toys again; they could easily award MB the license for movie toys even while letting TLG have the comics ones (so that we'd have a reversal of the 2004 scenario), for example. But I suspect - I really don't know, mind you, and have no expertise in the area, but I suspect - that they might want to go with a single licensee for all products of the same kind, whether movie or comics related, so that we could see TLG making a variety of Spider-Man sets, some of them modeled upon the new movie reboot and some based more directly on the classic comics that are part of the larger Marvel universe. I'm pretty sure they'd be sticking with the classics. For instance, the Riddler minifig looks much more similar to the original Riddler, instead of the current one. Quote
Blondie-Wan Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 As the license is based on the comic does that mean that we'll be getting Miles Morales as spider-man since Peter Parker died? He's dead only in the "Ultimate" Marvel universe, isn't he? Isn't the "classic" Amazing Spider-Man still running? Quote

It's not his first look, it's not his latest look, but it's his rockawesome look. Otherwise he is bland as sin. Quote
