November 1, 201113 yr I wish TLG should have taken up the challenge of their own to let the finalists present their models in a better way than trough these horrible thumbnail-pictures... I have always thought the same thing!!! TLG should have an option to post a video alongside the photos and maybe allow 2 or 3 photos instead of the terrible tiny thumbnails, which make it extremely hard to see the actual model.\ tim
November 2, 201113 yr Here are the 16 Lego Technic Challenge 2011 AFOL finalists (for side-by-side comparisons, and to record them for posterity). November 3, 201113 yr I wish TLG should have taken up the challenge of their own to let the finalists present their models in a better way than trough these horrible thumbnail-pictures... I have always thought the same thing!!! TLG should have an option to post a video alongside the photos and maybe allow 2 or 3 photos instead of the terrible tiny thumbnails, which make it extremely hard to see the actual model. In the previous post, one can see that the picture WIDTHS of the 16 finalists are all the same, but the top-down LENGTHS are different. The pictures that are in a vertical, "Portrait" format seem to be larger than the horizontal, "Landscape"-format ones. The Technic Challenge webmaster is probably using a fixed webpage "template" to jam the various pictures into a certain width. SO, to have the largest-possible image for the voters to see, recommend submitting your Challenge entries in a photo collage made in a vertical "Portrait" format (like the red car below, and not the yellow truck which is hard to see):
December 4, 201113 yr Zblj (the 2010 AFOL winner) has already noticed that Sheepo/ Sheepo86 is the 2011 AFOL winner of the Lego TECHNIC Challenge! Congratulations, Fernando! Here is the "Legendary Storm T4 Cabriolet '11" winning entry: "Based on a very famous real car, this MOC has around 3500 parts,AWD and,as outstanding features controlled by PF:working 7+R speeds dual clutch gearbox with friction clutches, disc brakes with rear lights, folding roof and spoiler, progressive accelerator, working steering wheel, handbrake and much more." PRIZE: More pictures of the "Porsche 911 997 Turbo Cabriolet PDK" are on Sheepo's Brickshelf gallery, and he has this YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnGj4wxsNZY Edited December 4, 201113 yr by DLuders
December 4, 201113 yr Congratulations! I cant think of a more deserving model to win!! That is a sweet prize to. tim
December 5, 201113 yr Congratulations Sheepo! Love your work, keep it up. Whats in store for next year?!
December 5, 201113 yr Thanks to all for your votes and comments!! Congratulations Sheepo! Love your work, keep it up. Whats in store for next year?! I have 3 new big MOCs in the oven for the next year ;)
December 5, 201113 yr Author Congrats! The new models will sure come in handy, as new parts and stuff! Be prepared for a massive DSL package :)
December 6, 201113 yr Three new models in the oven? Beware not to set the oven too high! Anyway. Congratulations to Sheepo!
December 6, 201113 yr Firstly and more importantly, well done on this achievement and would like to say congratulations to everyone who won and got this far. The Porsche is, in my opinion, a masterpiece. BUT...and this is probably where I get banned or run off the board with pitchforks...am I'm right in thinking that model (and probably a few others) was roughly a year in the making? It's all down to Lego and if I was in the same position, I'd enter models that fitted the monthly brief. But there does seem to be a two tier standard - the 20 day build model versus the months of development, master builder models which were never really designed for the competition. To have the best chance of winning in 2012, I should have started building 6 months ago and hoped a theme was broad enough to fit.
December 6, 201113 yr Actually Brickend you bring up a very good point that has been talked about in the past and also why I feel these contests are somewhat unfair as it seems most people don't exactly follow the rules. This Porsche model is quite fantastic, but if the rules did state that the models were only supposed to be built in a certain time frame and people are throwing in models that they either completed far before the monthly contest even started or spent over a year building them and then they found it was just a convenient time for them to add them into the contest, is that really fair for the other contestants that did follow the rules? So while it is great for Sheepo that he won the prize, can you really feel good about it knowing the fact that you won with having a large advantage that was just overlooked? December 7, 201113 yr @ Meatman: Consider that the Lego Technic Challenge contest organizers often could not clearly state the monthly submission DEADLINES without me having to write them AT LEAST THREE TIMES this year. They had dates that did not match, missing dates, etc. Most GOOD MOCs take a considerable amount of parts (i.e., Bricklink orders). It takes time to obtain all of the necessary parts, build it, then submit it on time. Typically, the monthly deadlines only allowed a maximum of 2-1/2 weeks to submit the entry. That simply is not enough time for INTRICATE MOCs like Sheepo's. I personally don't mind AFOLs submitting their MOCs that happen to fit the monthly theme. Heck, there was so much PLAGIARISM going on in 2011 (month after month), it's a relief that a legitimate MOCcer won the prize!
December 7, 201113 yr Congrats Sheepo! Well deserved! About the time frame for models to be built: I have spoken in person to the guy responsible for the Technic Challenge. I too was under the impression that the moc submissions could only be built within the contest time frame, but after I asked specifically about this, he assured me that it was perfectly fine to submit models that were previously built. Any moc could be submitted, regardless of time spent building it. All that is required is the "Technic Challenge" sign in the picture. I have no problem with people submitting project that took a while to build, and If I get a chance, I'll probably submit some of my mocs as well. I personally don't mind AFOLs submitting their MOCs that happen to fit the monthly theme. Heck, there was so much PLAGIARISM going on in 2011 (month after month), it's a relief that a legitimate MOCcer won the prize! I agree. Edited December 7, 201113 yr by dhc6twinotter
December 7, 201113 yr David, I completely understand what you are saying, but what I am saying that it is just unfair to people if they are trying to abide by the rules. Say next year the theme is Lamborghini or exotic I don't think it would be too fair if crowkillers entered his Murcielago. Like I said, I am happy that Sheepo won and I think his model was the best out of the entries.
December 7, 201113 yr I too believe the best model won. I just think that a monthly competition could be about short, imaginative builds. They may not be the best technically, or be the most polished but they might still inspire and lead to further development. You wouldn't need to worry about the time it takes to get orders in from Bricklink, just building with what you've got and to the theme. Some of the competitors did this and I applaud them, they weren't perfect but they were very creative within the short time constraints. I would also have an overall category for 'ultimate' builds at the end of the year. They should be acknowledged as well, but in a different sense. Most of this is irrelevant as the plagiarism has knocked a lot of the spirit out of the event, I wouldn't be too surprised if it gets canned.
December 17, 201113 yr Great win by sheepo. keep up the good work and hope your next models are even more greater greeting Edwin Korstanje
