Hi all!

I have some problem with the model 8297-off road truck.

I've built it, everything worked fine for the first few days and then at the 4th day after building it don't raise the suspension with the motor; i.e. if I turn the truck upside down so the wheels will be on the top (not touching the ground. the roof touches the ground) it DO raises the suspension but if they're on the ground the motor very "struggles" and stucks...changing batteries didn't help me. What can I do? the motorised suspension are one of the key features of this model...please, any help will be appreciated:-(

thanks.

Additionally I forgot that loweirng the suspension is never a problem, no matter if the truck is upside down or not...

Strange...

Looks like the Technic Gear 24 Tooth Clutch 60c01.png keeps slipping. Did you add to much extra's on the model? Or is it just broken? When the former: remove some of the extra ballast, when the latter: aske LEGO for a new one and replace....

Good luck!

I didn't put any extra on it so I tried disassembling some of the model in order to get the clutch part. I took the part ant it seems intact and not broken or something like that. Should I change it to other tooth piece from other technic set (and then i don't have aclutch)?

Thanks!

Just an update: Ichanged the clutch into this:

and it works just fine.

Ensuring I turn off the motor each time it finsihes a "circle', should I keep it there?

thanks again!

Good thinking!

For me the changing of the clutchgear and thus solving the problem proves that there was something wrong with that gear.

So you should write an email to LEGOand explain your problems. Usually they sent you a new gear for free.

(sorry for the additional empty message-my bad)

Thanks! I wrote to them now about it and hope they indeed send me the part.

By the way, is there a chance it started the problems due to "heavyweight lifting" (*) with the winch (and thus the clutch worked very hard these few days)?

If it's true, they should say something about that in the manual, like all other warnings and "don't do" list/figures that are found there. For me it's not obvious that working hard with the model should ruin the part.

(*) i.e. many times the vehcile pulled itself with the winch since heavy objects were attached to the hook at the front.

Maybe, could be, but definately shouldn't be!

But remember stressing parts in a way that isn't intended for the part will break them in time.

Always remember that it's just a toy...

Happy playing anyway!

Speaking of these clutch gears, there seem to be two different kinds of them. The original ones from 1997 have light gray centers and have a much higher torque "threshold" before they start slipping, even though they have the same "2.5-5.0 N-cm" markings. I have two of these from 8479, but haven't seen them in anything after that. The usual kind with dark gray/blay centers slip much more easily.

Has anyone seen any sets apart from 8479 and 8735 that contain the light gray variety?

It is possible that you simply built the model with too much friction. Check that all the axle holes are lined up, the gears are not clamped too tight, and that all the axles can turn freely. If there is too much drag, it will cause the clutch to slip. This will be most evident when lifting since it requires more torque.

I think it's not unlikely that the clutchgear went bad. I have quite a load of them by now and there's quite some difference in the amount of torque they need to actually slip, some slip quite easily while others won't slip even with an XL PF motor and stalling the drivetrain.

Wow, never heard of that before!

It would be perfect if clutch gear do not slip until 80 percent of XL's torque, or so.

Mine 10 clucthgears slips very easily, so I do not have use of them.

I use them with the XL by gearing up the motor first, adding in the clutch and then gearing it back down. This reduces the torque that goes to the clutch gear and makes it more effective.

When needed, I use 2 or 3 pairs of pulleys and rubber band, but only for steering. Very simple and small! Sorry for off!
