mania3 Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 (edited) I wanted to pass along a list of sets that are to be discontinued soon. Many of these, as members are aware, are already discontinued. I only made note of ones from themes I collect, so I excluded some others (Bionicle, Duplo) which were listed but I wasn't terribly interested in. Anyways, here's the list separated by theme: Star Wars Anakin's Fighter Hail-Fire Droid & Army of Droids AT-AP Podwalker Rogue Shadow MagnaGuard Starfighter V-19 Torrent Imperial Dropship Rebel Scout Speeder Indiana Jones Motorcycle Chase The Lost Tomb Temple Escape River Chase Jungle Cutter Temple of the Crystal Skull Shanghai Chase Fight on the Flying Wing Mindstorms Mindstorms NXT (discontinued in April 2010) Castle King's Castle Siege Dwarves' Mine Tower Raid Troll Assault Wagon Dwarves Mine Defender Troll Warship Agents The entire first product line (IE non-Agents 2.0 sets) City Fire Station Garbage Truck Quad Bike Off Road Vehicle & Jet Scooter Helicopter & Raft Patrol Boat & Tower Dozer Helicopter Transporter Pirates The entire line Spongebob Squarepants Remaing sets that have yet to be discontinued So anyways, just thought I'd pass this along. Some of these sets are part of Black Friday sales here in the states, so grab them if you don't have them! Edited November 23, 2009 by mania3 Quote
Svelte Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 Thanks for the list, mania3. There was some discussion about this in the Aussie sales thread - no real surprises, although it's sad to see Indy 09 Wave 1 go to clearance so soon. I'm surprised they're discounting Pirates so soon - I thought mid-2010 was the cutoff date. I guess for non-US S@H a lot of this stuff will go on sale right after Xmas, as happened last year (stuff that isn't sold out, anyway). Quote
Oky Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 (edited) So, is this a list of sets you think will be discontinued or which you know will be discontinued, based on an unstated source? If it's the latter, I'm a bit dissappointed not seeing the Republic Gunship on the list. I'm waiting to pick that one up on clearance. And yes, it is sad to see Pirates discontinued so soon. The way Lego treats this theme makes it seem like sales are bad, but as we know, that's not the case. Edited November 23, 2009 by Oky Wan Kenobi Quote

Svelte Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 mania3 works for LEGO, so I imagine he has seen a list of stuff to be marked down. Sheesh, the Gunship has only been out for 15 months! I think the V1-9 and Magnaguard are on the list as they've been slow sellers. Otherwise it looks pretty much as I'd expect I'd also think that there'd be a few slow-moving Exclusives on that list, too. Maybe the Volkswagen and possibly even the Green Grocer since the Lego store calendars and the S@H catalogs seem to discount it wherever possible. Quote
The Green Brick Giant Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 Good to see there are no surprises, most of those sets I haven't seen in years. Like Agents 1.0, can't remember the last time I saw those. Quote
jonwil Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 Surprised to see the 1h 09 Indy sets on the list to go. Mindstorms NXT going away makes sense with the 2.0 now out. Very surprised to see the helicopter transporter and dozer (the heli is a 2h 09 set and the dozer is a 1h 09 set assuming they are the sets I am thinking of) As for pirates, I am VERY surprised they are discontinuing them so quickly given that they have been one of the hottest selling non-licenced themes in years. My guess is that TLG have some kind of tie-in with the next Pirates Of The Caribbean film (due july 2011) and want to make sure all the Pirates product is gone before the POTC product hits. I just hope the fast-discontinuation of Pirates means I can pick up a cheap redcoat base for parts... Quote
wooootles Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 Always sad to see such a staple like Pirates go Also, 7236 Police Car and 7237 Fire Truck not on that list! They're almost 5 years strong! Quote
Big Cam Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 God info to know, thanks alot. I can budget accordingly. Quote
ILikePi Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 (edited) Thanks for the list mania! Good thing there's nothing that I want on there. Edited November 23, 2009 by ILikePi Quote
Legoliner Pilot Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 (edited) CityFire Station Garbage Truck Quad Bike Off Road Vehicle & Jet Scooter Helicopter & Raft Patrol Boat & Tower Dozer Helicopter Transporter Most of that is stuff I have anyway except for the Construction dozer and Helicopter Transporter. I feel no regret of not purchasing these sets. Edited November 23, 2009 by Legoliner Pilot Quote

My guess is that TLG have some kind of tie-in with the next Pirates Of The Caribbean film (due july 2011) and want to make sure all the Pirates product is gone before the POTC product hits. My guess is that TLC never added a storyline to pirates, like the old sets. 'old pirate theme had about forty something sets, this new one only had about twelve. Take a look at the Bionicle storyline- it's been going on for years because they've had a good story that keeps on continuing. This new pirate line is like, "arg, we've found treasure! arg, let's go play a joke on the admiral". You can't get very far with that, can you? >_> Quote
Rick Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 Most of that is junk anyway except for the Coast Guard stuff. I feel no regret of not purchasing these sets. That's kind of a strong statement to make. I happen to like and own almost all of the sets you (dis)qualify as being junk almost none of the Coast Guard sets. I guess it's all a matter of personal preference in the end. Quote
Luke McAwesome Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 (edited) CityFire Station Garbage Truck Quad Bike Off Road Vehicle & Jet Scooter Helicopter & Raft Patrol Boat & Tower Dozer Helicopter Transporter Geez, Helicopter Transport has only been available since August... That was a fast discontinuation. And Dozer, too? Man, why not just rip my heart out... Dozer's part of a line, and so is Helicopter Transport. Why are they only taking one set out of both lines? They aren't that expensive to distribute, are they? Edited November 23, 2009 by Striker Quote
brickzone Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 (edited) Fortunately nothing there I don't already have or can forgo entirely. I'm a bit behind in that I don't have some 09 sets yet (e.g. Troll's Mountain Fortress, larger Agents 2.0, Indy Temple of Doom, etc.), and I'm hoping they'll still be around in the middle of next year. With limited funds I've had to stick to things like Emerald Night, Battle for Endor, Pirate Advent Calendars, Winter Toy Shop and very hopefully, the Imperial Ship in the new year (although I may not be able to stretch that far post-Christmas). Here in The Netherlands, sets like these are usually short-lived. The recipe over here is, they introduce them and 'discount' them immediately (e.g., from €35 to €20/€25). It are typically 'big' (often 8-wide) sets with relatively large specialized pieces. Some past examples include the big yellow dump truck, the green truck with those two large green pre-fab dumper pieces, the coast guard 'Unimog' with boat. Next year it will (likely) be the big 8-wide fire truck with boat. Quote
mania3 Posted November 24, 2009 Author Posted November 24, 2009 What about 7990 Cement Truck? Wasn't on the list. While I did exclude certain themes, I didn't exclude sets from the themes listed. Quote
ProducePrincess Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 I'm saving up my money for all these set discontinuations and i'm also keeping my eye on lego.com for all the slaes that will be coming from these. Quote

Man, why not just rip my heart out...Dozer's part of a line, and so is Helicopter Transport. Why are they only taking one set out of both lines? They aren't that expensive to distribute, are they? Sadly they didn't have sales like other City sets, the stock piles of the dozer at Australian Kmart stores is proof of that. The helicopter transport was an odd set indeed, a towing operator with it's own traffic reporting copter, gee they have money to blow. See kids get given 20 or 30 dollars by grandparents usually hence they buy a 7631 or 7639, actual parents might go ahead and buy the child a 7633, 7637, 7641 or 7642 as a big birthday/christmas present. The dozer and copter transport falls in the middle of all that, they get missed. Even some of the Star Wars sets it happens too as well, another example is Mr I.Jones, Kmart in Australia have discontuned every set of that theme above 40 dollars - they did not sell as well as previous releases. charlieboy Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 Tis always sad when they discontinue sets but ive saved a massive amount this week on these four sets- AT-AP Podwalker Rogue Shadow MagnaGuard Starfighter V-19 Torrent Maybe i should have waited until Lego reduced them,i could have saved even more! Svelte Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 Sadly they didn't have sales like other City sets, the stock piles of the dozer at Australian Kmart stores is proof of that... *snip snip* That's not really the reason. LEGO produces a number of sets each year which are *intended* to be discounted heavily, and which don't have the regular run of 'normal' theme sets. Rick has listed a few of these. In the UK some of them were even cheaper, with a 'retail' price of GBP35 but a 'reality' price of GBP17.50 (such as the 2007 Green Truck). Last year's Coast Guard track was an example of this mid-sized City 'special deal'. K-Mart in Australia has been particularly aggressive with its sales, yes, but most other retailers are still holding the fort on retail prices (apart from the usual % off sales). Quote
