When I first saw the blurry prelim pics of this set I thought it looked really cool. It actually looked like a nice solid police vehicle not like the joke of an armoured transport found in "Gold Heist". So when I saw this set at Cosco for $35 I immediately grabbed one.

Set Number 5979

Set Name Max Security Transport

Pieces 333 (on box) Brickset disagrees with me though saying there three fewer.

Theme Space Police III

Price $50 Canadian

Other Links Brickset My Brickshelf

First lets start with the box it's a pretty big box, but feels pretty light in your arms (like a lot of sets these days). The box scene is action packed with good CGI, also proclaiming that this set is so called "Special edition"; didn't know there was a different regular version of this set as well  .

maxsectras_001_1.jpg

The back of the box shows the various features of the set. It seems that Snake is making a break towards Slizer with the cop in hot pursuit.

maxsectras_006_1.jpg

I don't have a picture of the bagged parts but there were three numbered bags, with the wheels loose in the box nothing special. The instruction manual has the same image as the box. It was a bit hard to follow, there’s a little trouble telling black from dark grey and it's easy to skip over a few steps, I had to go back and fix something about three times through out the build which is weird for me.

Three minifigs, but not one of them is unique. It's nice that slizer came in this set, I'm sure a lot of castle builders will be especially happy with being able to get him in a 50 dollar set. But come on Lego where's the cop's air tank? And another Snake. Could they not have included a new alien, I mean all they would have to do is recolour a previous alien, so this set would be a little more "special". Plus there's the added incentive to buy this set for the SPIII collectors.

maxsectras_011_1.jpg

The first thing we build is Slizers speedster. Yeah right more like a cannon stuck on a plate with a suicidal minifig along for the ride. They even managed to include a sticker on it  .

maxsectras_012_1.jpg

The one nice thing about this speedster is the engine intake is in dark grey rather than light grey. There are a total of three of them in this set.

maxsectras_014_1.jpg

And now onto what we've all been waiting for!

The Max Security Transport!

maxsectras_017_1.jpg

When complete this thing's actually bigger than I expected and doesn't look to shabby either. It has a good colour scheme and just enough details to make it interesting. From head on we can see all of this thing's lasers for mowing down all of the "evil" aliens.

maxsectras_017_1.jpg

The engines are probably my favorite part of this ship, I believe they used this exact same technique in another Space Police set as well. You can see the other two dark grey air intakes in use here. I should mention that the engines and cockpit can dislocate to form a small escape ship for the cowardly police.

maxsectras_019_1.jpg

The stardard space police containment pod. Yes the front of the pod pops off when you shoot the black knob with the cannon from Slizers speedster. Personally I don't see use of these containment pods. In MACK Union we just shoot criminals; then chuck bodies into ditch.

maxsectras_020_1.jpg

Alright the next feature is probably my favorite one for it's simplicity. You see those two air intakes sticking out of the sides, with more lasers on them hiding behind the wheels. Pretty useless right?

maxsectras_021_1.jpg

Well by just pushing the containment pod in it pops up the two lasers in a ready to fire position. I love it, its fun to pop the lasers up and down; they also stay in place before you decide to let them back down.

maxsectras_022_1.jpg

Finally the last feature this set has is a self proclaimed “flight mode”. You see the wheels aren’t just wheels; no they are also thrusters that are capable of lifting the entire vehicle up. The wheels are connected loosely so that they are able to point to the side or down wards whenever you pick up the set the wheels usually shift downwards although sometimes you may need to tap them into position. This is a neat feature although some may find it annoying that the wheels may start pointing downward when they’re driving the vehicle over mountains.

maxsectras_024_1.jpg

Well all in all this set isn’t too bad, but it does seem to be a little lacking in some areas. The set is abundant in play features, and will probably be a blast for most kids. However it is a tad overpriced and the minifigs, and Slizer’s speedster in particular are very lacking. If you’re a die hard space police fan this is defiantly a set worth picking up, but for everyone else their money could be spent else where.

6.5/10

Sorry for the rather poor quality review (by Academy standards anyways) just wanted to get some pictures of this set up, and didn't feel the need to make a huge prfect review for it :sceptic: .

nice review, the pics are a little fuzzy but better than what I could do

I don't mind having five snakes, as I use them as mooks by removing the visor

I like this set alot, being that it is the only large land vehicle

also in the set is my favorate ship; Slizers bike

that ship is beautiful

Nice review  Looks like a fast cop car. I've been wondering how much cheaper are Lego Sets at Cosco normally?

Well usually they'll only have 1 or 2 sets at a time. Last time they had the sepretist shuttle and the Indy car chase set for $30, down from $40. This time they had had the Max sec. Transport and Jungle Cutter for $35. So you can usually save 25% if you're interested in the set they currently have. If you're near a Cosco I'd suggest checking it to see if they happen to have a set that you want.

Thanks for the comments by the way :classic: .

Wow. I knew about some of the functions, like the moving wheels, but I didnt know about the thing with the pop out lasers and stuff. I wish I had this. :cry_sad:

I've been looking for this set since Space Police came out, but I guess it never came out in any of my local stores. It's the last set I need to complete my Space Police collection (I'm including the sets I have on layby because I'll be picking them up eventually, they're safe now), and it also looks like one of the best sets in the series. There are no other large Space Police ground vehicles, and the only ones I'll have are the small ones that come with other sets. I'm disappointed they didn't make another set or two with wheels or tank treads, I really liked the wheeled and treaded vehicles in Mars Mission and got them all.

The worst thing is I saw this set on eBay, still boxed for $25 AUD and no one bidded on it, and I forgot to bid myself!

=O oh no! & how did I miss it?

I think it was $80AU (overpriced) but I bought it when it was released anyway. It's pretty cool, but I think it looks better in photos than in reality. I agree with a lot of the comments already made, I'd like to add this: on a hard smooth surface the wheels won't turn, on a too soft or uneven surface the body drags on the ground or gets caught. Medium-thin carpet is about all you can drive it on.

My only real problem with this set is that the wheels are connected to the hull with so thin elements. I imagine them breaking within minutes of handing the car over to a kid.
