I really like the stern design and windows, and the captains cabin looks excellent in the pic with the natural light, that picture of a ship is a great detail! A damn fine job all around! I'm glad that you (being a MOC-expert) like it You must build another one now I totally agreed, and this time, try to make two decked please I think I'll wait a couple of weeks before I start a new project, but I'm definitely planning to build a two decked (and minifig scale)ship. Yeah, if I make it minifig scale next time, I can put a lot more things like that in it (more lanterns, working wheel/capstan). I would also like to make cannons which can fire with some smoke or something like that if it's possible. Anyway, I can't wait to start with a new ship. Bows, sterns, masts, yardarms... they all offer new challenges when you don’t have the nice premade pieces to work with. I think you can do it though! It is just a different style of building, and the work on the Vesta proves you have the chops to make it work! Quote

BrickPerfection Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 I know it's been a while since I last posted here, but when I came across this I felt a bit awkward I missed it first What I like most about this magnificent creation is the overall appeareance which is just unlike every other Lego ship, maily due to the extremely detailed rigging. The "Vesta" really looks like the "Surprise" from Master and Commander for a moment, that is before one recognises the giant French flag of course! The hull is super flat and elegant which is achieved through both a low gundeck and using a long 6 midsections. And of course there are also a ton of details, esspecially on the deck that also inspired me a lot. Nonetheless some sort of a horizontal curving would have added something to the hull. Besides I'm not too conviced by the method you want to access the gundeck with. It looks like guns and minifigures could easily fall in there and it would be a mess to retrieve them. I'm also missing stairs on the hull to climb from a boat. It has always been clear that your rigging would eventually become something outstanding, but it just turned out ridiculously awesome! I'd be quite curious to see how it works. By the way, your masts look really nice too, I tried to copy them first, but ended up with a different solution that now mostly shares the look and I think it's a bit better, also in terms of stability. However there is one thing I must ask you: please, please take and share some more pics... possibly with some background or photoshopping? I mean this is such an amazing creation, we don't see many of these... For instance in the very first picture one cannon is not run out , and there is almost no other pic showing all of her beauty. One thing that is really mindblowing is how your ship grew and developed during these 1,5 years of building. Remember where you started? I have a book about the movie with a lot of detailed pic's that helped me a lot.Nonetheless some sort of a horizontal curving would have added something to the hull.I agree with you. I tried to give it a better curve on the downside of the line, but the top could have been better.But I've learned from it and I'll try to do it better on my next ship. I can remove those plates on the whole lenght and on both sides. So if something goes anywhere, I can always give it a push from the opposite direction. But I made the plates 'protrude'(?) 1 plate (or 1/3 stud).If you look very closely, you can see it, but I'll try to make better pictures of it in the future. Ok, My masts won't break either, they are completely filled up with pins and hoses and secured by the rigging. But I'm curious how you did it, it's hard to see on the pictures. As soon as I have time, I'll make better pictures of the ship and I'll try to show how all the rigging works. Wind blowing in the sails (I put a fan behind it ) And finally, how the sails work. First the studding sails: I think it's obvious from the pictures, otherwise don't hesitate to ask. Now how to hoist/lower the yards: Here you can also see the black rope around the sail. I've made ropes on the right lenght for every sail and at the ends tied to a bush which I can put on the yards (made of axles). And how to brace: Once they are public, you can see more pictures here.
